The sun slanted through the carriage window as it rumbled along the path, just barley missing Autumn’s eyes. She sighed quietly as the horses snorted outside, relaxed by the creaking wood sounds of the wheels on the gravel. The day was late, her journey having been delayed by her fiancé’s change of mind to not accompany her to the Hubris Castle to visit her relatives.
They are not my family…
Another sigh. She closed her eyes, letting the rock and sway of the carriage lull her to a close slumber as they rolled up to the Castle entrance. She jolted awake as the carriage stuttered to a halt and the door opened, a hand offered towards her. She stood, stooped in the low celing, taking the offered help down to the steps of the palace. She looked up at the grand entry way, a smile actually touching her lips as she saw nothing amiss in her view.
Walking forward, she let go of the hand without a word, without a backwards glance. She would expect them to take care of her things, she needn’t tell them what to do now. Perhaps a stroll around her home away from home would be in order after that long ride of just sitting.

Richard was sitting next to some young noblewoman whispering sweet nothings into her ear and watching in amusement as she giggled. Her face turned a shade of pink as he finished up brushing his cheek against her cheek as he drew back and planting a tiny kiss on her lips. Her face turned even redder as he drew back his bright orbs searching her own for something unknown. At the sound of the carriage approaching the young woman got up and left not wanting to be seen by her father.
Richard watched her run out with her face as red as her hair. After she was gone he remained seated for a moment or two longer before getting up and stretching. He might as well go see who exactly had arrived. Walking to the front of the castle Richard watched as his cousin walked towards the front doors. Crossing his arms in mild amusement a smirk appeared on his face rather quickly. "Hello Autumn long time no see. Where is the old scoundrel who is courting you? I just assumed he would be with you."
Okay so maybe he knew he likely wouldn't show but sometimes he liked to play the innocent card. It worked for his sister quite well and he was not quite as good as it as she was but he made up for it in other areas. Still he should probably not kick her while she was down. "Don't worry he will come around I guess. Even if I don't particularly like him for the record. He is too stuck up." Funny how he doesn't like someone who is not all that different from him really.

She looked up to meet his eyes, her own half closed in what looked to be a rather bored or blank expression as was her usual. She gave him a sort of half shrug, her ivory dress rising off the ground an inch or so to reveal the buckle on her boot.
"Oh? It’s been a long time, has it? I suppose so."
Her voice seemed to match her features, almost disinterested. There was no real surprise in her voice as she spoke again.
"He decided to stay home once more…I don’t know why I still expect him to accompany me here."
She sighed slightly. She knew that Richard knew the extent of her engagement and the feelings she had for her ‘childhood sweetheart’. The truth was that she didn’t like him all too much anymore either but she wasn’t about to admit it to her cousin. Autumn approached him, stepping up the stairs and linking her arm in his, continuing to walk. She was here to visit the family, she might as well.
"So how have things been around here?"

Richard took note of Autumn's bored and blank expression not at all surprised since she had been like that for as long as he could remember. It was something he disliked in her really. Going around with such an expression tended to mean you had something to hide. Richard shrugged at her words because in all honesty he didn't really pay all that much attention to when she visited. It could have been yesterday for all he really cared. Still it was polite to at least pretend to like family. "It at least feels like it has been a long time. Then again it always is when it concerns friends and family." Oh nice save. Sometimes he surprised even himself.
Richard gave her a look of pity that was only a little sincere. He was sorry she had gotten her heart basically crushed simply because of the fact she was family. However they had never been close enough for the sorrow to progress passed that point. Granted he hadn't tried very hard to get a better relationship with his cousin but then again neither had she. Perhaps know would be a good time to change that. Thanks to her arrival his afternoon was now free after all.
"Not everyone is cut out to be a Bellerose Autumn the blame should not be entirely with him. Father is a hard man to meet without being intimidated even without knowledge that he is the king. He has an aura about him. Perhaps your betrothed is afraid of what he might do to him." Richard shrugged again not even beginning to want to look deeper into the mind of her engaged. Letting her link her arm with his Richard walked with her with the practiced ease of a prince. "Things have been interesting and yet dull at the same time. It really just depends on the day. How have things been at your residence Autumn?"

The smile touched her lips at his words. Yes, what he said was more than likely a farce but it was polite all the same and for that she was content. But his next words brought on another small, almost inaudible sigh.
"Yes, but though he might be intimidating, I’m pretty sure that James’s problem does not lie with meeting the King."
If fact, Autumn was pretty sure that James couldn’t care less about meeting the king. They were simply tired of each other’s company but he wanted the title and she was stubborn. Oh, and the sightings probably didn’t help either. Speaking of which, there was one now. Her eyes wandered in to the side, keeping track of the white rabbit that appeared to be walking in the other direction. Wearing a top hat and tailcoat nonetheless. She scoffed a bit looking away from what only she could see, drawn back to the conversation.
"Oh, I suppose things have been a bit dull at home…James goes hunting almost everyday so there really isn’t much in the way of company."
Perhaps I should come visit more often…
Her thoughts paused a bit as she contemplated the option. There was a slight chuckle that bubbled up, her other hand reaching to cover her mouth as she watched the rabbit bound back around, now on all fours carring a rose in it's mouth, it's monocle flying behind him.

Richard shrugged again the gesture becoming second nature as Autumn in a roundabout way admitted that her betrothed didn't want to come because of her. "Perhaps maybe next time will be different." Even if he doubted the next time would be different he was still attempting to be polite and comfort her. They were family after all. They may not be very close but that is what family did right? Comfort each other in times of despair? Well he had never really been good with that type of thing really. He was better with his siblings but that was about it.
Richard watched her with a quizzical expression as Autumn looked to the side then after a moment or two scoffed a little and looked away from...nothing? Nodding at her words the quizzical expression was still present on his face. "Well sorry to be blunt but he always struck me as pretty dull even when he is around. Not to mention hunting is boring as well so I am sure you aren't missing out on anything." Watching with the same quizzical expression as Autumn giggled at the invisible thing Richard decided to address her craziness.
"A little early in the day to be drinking don't you think cousin?" Granted he had drank much earlier than this before and he wasn't of age for certain. Still it seemed odd she would drink before coming unless she was trying to tell them something. After all if you had to drink to go visit family then that was certainly a sign of some kind.

"Perhaps…"There was not really any hope in her voice, rather the word came out in a sigh and a shrug. She really didn’t believe it herself. Really she should just leave him…but that would mean admitting defeat, not an act she was about to commit. And that look on his face...was that look in reference to her giggle? She better sober up before she gave something away. All those years of hiding her secret would not be undone because she was feeling chipper. Autumn cleared her throat at his expression."I’m sure it’s a real bore, he only goes for something to do…and what if it’s a bit early to be drinking?"Another giggle at the suggestion that she might be drunk. Really, she hardly touched the stuff anyway. Last time she had something to drink things didn’t go too smoothly and she was not about to have a repeat anytime soon. No, it would be much better to avoid drink altogether. Her voice was teasing as her steps hugged a little closer to him, their bicepts now touching, hips almost brushing each others."I only jest, Richard, I would not have had anything right before coming over here!"Her voice was reassuring as her eyes lit up. This was turning out to be a pleasant visit so far at least, Richard was pleasant. A smile graced her lips as she became more comfortable in his presence. Funny how she always seemed to be more comfortable in a man’s presence than any girl.

Richard took note of how devoid of hope her voice seemed to be. Obviously her engagement seemed to be uncertain. Why anyone would ever get married was beyond him anyway really. His father had the right idea in just having romantic interludes and not a prolonged relationship. Relationships got too messy. Women got too clingy. Obviously his cousin was being stubborn in not sending the man on his way. Not that he might have been in the same situation under different circumstances. Thankfully he was born in the way he was.
"I mean honestly who wants to sit and wait for hours on end just to kill an animal. That is something for servants to do. Well my only complaint about you drinking before coming is you didn't bring me any dear cousin." Richard didn't think there was any reason to pretend he hadn't ever drank before. Was he an alcoholic? No but he did enjoy the occasional glass of wine or something of that nature. It helped take the edge off sometimes. Not to mention it could turn a six into a solid ten.
Richard was glad to hear that she took his statement as a little joke. However he was at least partway serious about her being drunk. He didn't remember her being so...crazy after all. It seemed like a natural conclusion to come to. She seemed to be growing more comfortable with him by the second with was always a gift really. Women were always comfortable around him for some reason or another. Most of his female family members were no exception.
"Well that is a relief to here. After all had you had a drink before coming and not brought me any I might have thought you hated me." Still walking with the ease and grace of royalty standing up straight. He was the perfect example of how a prince was supposed to be for the most part. Charming, check. Kind, check for the most part unless of course the person was beneath him. Polite, check. Handsome, oh check check check. "So is there anywhere in particular you would like to go?"

She laughed lightly at his joke. It amused her to think of James as nothing but an errand boy, dressed not in his usual silks and finery but in something akin to a burlap sack perhaps? It would serve him right, really…the only reason he stayed with her was for the status that he had done nothing to earn…but her parents thought he was just a dream come true. Finally, someone whom with she could get along with and that put up with her hallucinations. Except the little fact that James knew nothing about them.Of course I would have brought some to my lovely cousin! I wouldn’t dream of leaving you out, love. She kept her eyes locked on his as a blur passed the corner of her eye. The rabbit was back, hopping up and down, trying his damndest to catch her attention. She glanced at him quickly, her eyes hopping back to Richard’s again just as fast to avoid the glare the creature gave her. But the thing wasn’t giving up that easily.I say! Don’ chu wan’ this ‘ere bud?It offered up the rose from earlier, hopping up and down, almost tangling up her feet and tripping her…if he was real. As it was, she had to concentrate rather hard to keep from stepping over the creature and instead stepping through it. Autumn continued her walk with Richard as if she saw nothing as best she could.Hated you? Never! The very thought that she might hate her family made her cringe a bit on the inside though she tried her best to hide the feeling. She knew it was only a tease but she didn’t like the idea all the same. It hit too close to home with her mother being so distant from her, almost as if she didn't like her. The only mother she really knew growing up were the nannys and professors and those that taught her ettiquette.
She also walked with the grace befitting of one of royal linage though it was more of a habit for her to walk with a straightened back than it was something she had to remember. Her ivory dress brushed the stone floor as she tiled her eyes away from his, looking around for a moment in contemplation. Hmm…well, I really don’t think that I have a particular place that calls to me at this moment. But maybe a drink after that long carriage ride would be in order? Non alcoholic of course! The question in her voice was playful as her eyes met his again, waiting for him to lead the way. After all, she was the guest and he was the host that showed up first to greet her.

Richard smiled in a very pleasant way as his cousin laughed at what she obviously thought a joke concerning hunting being for servants. He truly believed that however. He didn't particularly look down on those who hunted just don't ask him to do the same. He liked to think his time was more precious than that. Nodding to his cousin as she spoke of telling him that she would have brought him some alcohol of course had she drank some herself.
"Glad to hear that cousin. It would have been quite the bore had you chose to exclude me after all while you had fun." The way it was spoken was as if it would have been the most horrible thing in the world had she done just that. Watching as his cousins eyes darted to the side as if there was something where there was nothing Richard had to stifle a laugh. She really was crazy. She was truly trying to act as if she say nothing but honestly there were a few times when she stepped a little too high.
Chuckling at his cousin Richard shook his head playfully. "Honestly cousin if your going to be crazy no need to hide it. Not like I mind anyway." Hearing her speak of never hating him Richard smirked. "Of course dear cousin I am glad to hear that. Besides I was only teasing. I am pretty impossible to hate after all." There were a few guys here and there but honestly it was to be expected after he flirted with their wives. Still he hadn't tried to take it farther than that so really grown men being threatened by him was kind of pathetic. Still it amused him to see the men act like that so he would continue doing just that.
Walking along beside his cousin with ease Richard gave a small smile at her mentioning of a drink being nice. Though she did go on to be a bore and mention that it would be nonalcoholic. "You had me at drink cousin then completely lost me at nonalcoholic. But fine if you insist on being a bore and a prude then we can have nonalcoholic drinks." And just like that Richard redirected their course so that she could get her drink.

The laughter came easily now though it was still soft and quiet. How amusing that he joked back with her. It was a nice contrast to the man she was to wed, a man who was all too serious with every aspect of his life. Really, perhaps it would do the stiff a bit of good to accompany her to her dear family’s estate and learn a thing or two about charm as the man possessed none any longer. Yes, Richard was a very nice change of pace for her.”It wouldn’t be as fun without you, Richard.” She again let the small chuckle escape her lips at the sheer sarcasm he layered onto the comment. Adopting a look of mock injustice, she lay her free hand onto her chest over her heart to match his jest. As if his exclusion was simply unheard of to her. She was much more animated than she usually was but again, it could most likely be contributed to her lack of exposure to wit and humor. ”You’re practically the life of the party.” Of course, she had no idea if he was truly the ‘life of the party’ or not however, she could take a lucky guess and be safe.
A mischievous glint entered her eye as he questioned her sanity once more, a sly smile touching her lips. “Or perhaps I’m pretending to be crazy just to see how well you would react to it.” But the way her words came across…it held that ounce of truth behind it…it was just difficult to pin whether or not she was truly teasing him or if she was covering something up. Another light laugh and she was following his lead perfectly.”Impossible might be a bit arrogant, don’t you think, love?” She let the question carry on in her voice though she knew he would hear the joke in it. Or at least she hoped so. ”By all means, cousin, don’t let my lack of alcohol leave you dry. I don’t believe you remember but the last time I drank, it was not a pretty sight. Really, am I such a bore to you?” The smile had faded, the bored expression once more taking residence upon her features. Really, a prude…she didn’t let on besides the already apparent signs that she didn’t appreciate the comparison.

Richard smiled at Autumn in a slightly knowing way as she mention it not being fun without him. "Of that, my dear sweet cousin, I have no doubt. Fun is impossible without me." Shrugging in an amused way as she mentioned him being the life of the party. "It is natural I am afraid. It can be a curse at times." She adopted a sly smile and mentioned that she could just be pretending to be crazy. Richard nodded in an agreeing way.
"I suppose that could be true but then again I like to just think you are crazy. It adds to your charm. Who cares if you see things that are not really there. You just get to do something most people pay money to have happen." Well what charm she had. It was obvious she was not used to this sort of joking type of conversation no doubt because she was engaged to a stick in the mud. Still he tended to have this sort of conversation most of the time. Especially when a beautiful lady was involved.
As Autumn mentioned impossible being a bit arrogant Richard grinned wider. "Of course it is yet at the same time it is the entirety of the truth." As she spoke again he recognized the hurt feelings she harbored and he sighed snaking his arm around her shoulders and giving her a squeeze.
"It was all in jest cousin. Prude woman do not hold your level of beauty. I probably should back on the alcohol for now though. Especially if we are to see father which I am sure we will eventually. Naturally he wouldn't approve of me drinking. I do remember the last time however and it was quite the pretty sight. And were you a bore cousin then I wouldn't be standing here talking to you."
As they arrived for the drinks Richard signaled to one of the servants. "The lady wants a drink. Nonalcoholic. I would like something nonalcoholic as well. Surprise me I dunno what she would like. Ask her then make it quick." Looking towards Autumn he waited for her to speak up and tell the servant her drink of choice.
