Hey! I love making small movies and I'm always noticing small things in movies that pertain to things such as camera work, lighting, acting, etc.
One thing I notice that I thought was just amazing was the first "scene" you see Serenity and the crew. If you watch carefully, from when you first see Serenity to when they're about to leave, it's all shot w/ one continus film. The camera never cuts to go to another camera angle, it flows. I thought that was a great desicion on Joss's part because it really gives you the feeling that you're on the ship and it's not just a one sided set.
Anyone else notice stuff like that?

Yup, I noticed.
I also like to make films with my friends!!! We did a remake of LotR: Fellowship of the Ring. It was fun. I was Sam and Boromir.
My friend and I want to make a Serenity parody. Instead of reavers: ravers. Or weavers. We haven't decided yet.
Which would be more expensive: yarn or glow sticks?

Well, you'd get more yarn per dollar than glowsticks, but u have to buy it more in a bolk, while glowsticks are sold indivually... so i guess it depends on how many people you need to have yarn or glow stick.

Hm... we'd need a lot of yarn... but only as many glow sticks as ravers (AKA 2-3). Making short films is fun!

We made a remake of LotR: Fellowship of the Ring (best. time. ever. Plus we have so many inside jokes from making that), and my friends were making a remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and I decided to stay out of it. Mostly because I couldn't go to the day for filming.

Yes, I noticed the continuous shot too, but not consciously the first time. I came home from that first screening and laid in bed a while, turning it over in my mind (because sleep wasn't an option), and then realized I didn't remember seeing any cuts in that scene. It's a cool effect and Joss seems to like it. He's used it on Buffy and Angel before, most notibly in the season premere of Angel season 5, where the entire first act is one continous shot. Although if we're going to camera shots from Firefly, there's one I like the one in "Serenity" the episode, in the scene where Kaylee's shot. There's some kind of whip-pan from Inara to Simon and then a rack focus to Mal. (I may be getting the characters out of order). Anyway, good stuff.

I though it really showed how fast everything was going, and I loved the expression on Jewel's face when she was "shot". heart

They are all such great actors/actresses that their characters are real. And it helps with the no-cut filming because i think it gives it a more realistic look. You can see the whole thing as if you were there.

Apparently they built that huge ship and all for the tv show, then ppl took it apart, when it was cancled, and then joss had to have it rebuilt for the movie. I couldn't tell until i heard him talking about it on the comentary!

In the pilot ep, when Mal says to Badger "The wheel never stops turning Badger" To which Badger replies "That only matters to the people on the rim"
Something along those lines. Anyway, the camera shots for that little exchange of dialogue is done really well.
