What we most desire, we are afraid of. We are afraid that what we love, will not love us back So, instead of reaching out, we hide our feelings. We as humans are usually too afraid or unready to reach out and take hold of the things we cherish. After all, it is a dangerous game, love. It is all too easy to be hurt. So, instead of risking pain, we deny ourselves the thing we cherish most in order to protect ourselves. We think it is less painful, perhaps easier to pretend we do not care rather than take responsibility, accept who we are, and reach out to grab hold of the thing we most desire. This is the meaning of 'not being honest with oneself.' It is a defense mechanism. However, we as humans will eventually learn that it is just as painful to deny ourselves as it is to be hurt. 'To be true to oneself' is to admit one's feelings without a care in the world for the pain we might feel if they are not returned. The true meaning of love is 'to love oneself.' We have to love ourselves before we can love another, because it is the love we feel for our own person that gives us the strength to bear the pain of denial and the courage to find acceptance.
