So I recently saw Black Swan in theaters. I had been looking forward to it greatly once I had seen the first trailer for it about a year ago. Luckily my excitement was not disappointed.

I would go as far to say that this was Darren Aronofsky's best film he has made so far. The structure of it I felt was very similar to Pi, but was done in a more masterful and experienced way.

The story is about a ballerina who is selected to star in her studio's production of Swan Lake. She becomes very stressed about being perfect during her performance and things only get worse when a new girl shows up and becomes her understudy. Mental insanity ensues.

This was one of the few movies I have seen where every scene was necessary towards advancing the plot. It was very exciting to watch and you don't know where the film will take you. I have heard people say they were confused by some things in the film, but how I feel is that you must watch it with an open mind. Some things are left for the audience to wonder about and discuss.

The best thing about this movie other then the wonderful directing was Natalie Portman. I have never seen her perform in a film as amazing as she did Black Swan. I thought it was some of the best acting I have witnessed. I will be very shocked if she does not win best actress.

Overall: 10/10 A masterpiece.

I haven't seen Black Swan yet, but most everyone that has watched it seems to be really impressed.

Maybe not in theaters but I'll definitely see it when it comes out on DVD.

It was really great. The ending gave me chills.
And I don't understand why people have found it confusing.

I liked it. I didn't love it, but I liked it. The acting was pretty good, the writing even better, and the cinematography even better than that.

Every day after Christmas, I go to a double feature with my family. This year, we chose Black Swan and True Grit. Being as I saw the two back to back, it's hard for me to not compare them. I really loved True Grit, and it probably ended up making Black Swan not seem as good as it actually was for me. I should probably see it again.

I think it's because most people need answers to everything that goes on in a movie and have trouble with the idea of things being up to the viewer.

I saw Black Swan and True Grit within a few days of each other and still thought Black Swan was more impressive. Loved both, though.

Winona Ryder seemed miscast to me and Nina's relationship with her mother was interesting and a lot of people (for some reason) didn't connect that with her psychosis.

I have been going back recently trying to watch every movie that was nominated for 'Best Motion Picture' in this years Academy Awards. In the last two days I watched 'Kings Speech' (Winner) and 'Black Swan' While I will say I slightly enjoyed Kings Speech more, hands down Black Swan was the better film.

The whole movie is fascinating, it captures your attention from the beginning and doesn't let go. The whole way through it engages the audience, messing with your mind as you try to figure out what is real, what is in Nina's head, and how the movie will end. (I knew how it would end, the question was whether if it was going to be literal or not.)

Even though I haven't seen every film that was nominated for best picture yet, and I enjoyed Kings Speech more, I can honestly say I felt Black Swan should have taken it.

I said it before in the "Last movie you watched" - thread, but yeah, I didn't like it.
In fact, I felt like I'd been fooled.
It was nowhere near as clever, complex or confusing people made it seem to be and most of the time, I had at least some kind of idea what's going to happen.
I didn't really care about any of the characters, especially not those of Portman and Kunis (Mila's character was more laughable than anything).
Most of the time I wanted to grab the camera and turn it somewhere else; the camera work that, I suppose, was meant to be artistic, was only annoying.
Also, something I don't think I've mentioned before is that it looked fake.
I mean... Apparently, Portman and Aronofsky got their panties in a bunch when Portman's double said she did most of the dancing.
Well, considering that most of the time you only see either faces or feet, what do you honestly think it looks like?
Top this with tacky CGI, and voilĂ !

In a nutshell, I've seen less fake-looking b-movies and had the main character been younger, it could've been a part of your ordinary "coming of age" - rubbish.
Quite possibly the most ridiculously overrated movie in a while.

And looking at the nominations (and wins), I feel like everyone just jumped on the bandwagon and threw their brains out of the window.
Not that the awards really matter, but yyyyeah.

That's exactly how I felt with the Social Network. It seemed like everyone was jumping on that bandwagon and wanted it to win best motion picture. The movie was better than I thought it was, but far from what I thought should have been a winning film.

If you have read my post you would know that I disagree with you. I had no problem with the camera work, I thought the Cinematography and lighting was absolutely amazing in this film.

Predictable, sort of. If you knew the story of Swan Lake you have the feeling going in that this story was going to mirror Swan Lake. However part of the engaging element I mentioned above is in determining what is real, what is fake in Nina's psyche. *SPOILER ALERT* Was her death at the end of the movie literal? Or a representation of how a split personality dies as her Black Swan Persona takes over? Many long debates and interesting conversations with friends and other critics I have had about this one. This movie is not as literal as some people make it out to be, and when many people take it at that value, they are oblivious to the psychological battle that is developing between the two persona's. It's not the final destination, but how you get there that is the worthier part.

Do I think you have good, valid points in how you feel about this movie, absolutely, I can see why you feel the way you do about this film. However I think the statement of people who liked it "Throwing their brains out the window" as you put it is far from accurate when describing the people who enjoyed this film.

I never said there were no people who genuinely liked the movie.

Let's put it like this... Black Swan is sort of like the Aquaman of movies, except in the latter's case, everyone and their grandmother love to hate on him.
It's like they're not thinking for themselves, y'know.

Maybe it's just me being a grumpy ol' man.

And I'd love to spark up some conversation, even though I didn't enjoy the movie... But frankly, I don't think I have much more to say.

Honestly, though, some people actually missed the whole "psychological battle" - aspect? lol

Yup, I've talked to at least two people who didn't pick up on it and just said, 'She's Crazy' and left it at that.

I guess I can accept your Aquaman example. Sometimes people genuinely like something for what it is, other times they do just because everyone else does. That was how I felt about Social Network and Inception. Two movies so many people raved about and many thought should have won best motion picture, but when i watched them I felt they were lacking and weren't nearly as good as everyone was making them out to be. But if you have no more to say about this film, then we shall have to continue other interesting conversations about other films.
