 It was night at last. Tsukiko woke up and looked around at her sleeping family in the dark den. Carefully stepping over each one, she found her way to the mouth of the den. Her small head poked out of the den as she looked up to the sky, but she did not see the bright ball that she had desired to see. As she looked around again she saw what she was looking for in the tree. "Why don't you come out from there?" She giggled and walked around the tree with her eyes were wide with curiosity as the moon seemed to move with her. She sat down beside the tree and watched the bright sphere.

 Mahuika had journeyed a bit further than she'd meant to. She was aware of the fact, and knew she should probably turn back while she had the chance so she could be sure to get home before the sun came up and her parents wonders where she was. But she didn't.
Instead, she decided to press forward and see just what else was out in the world. She was far from tired, and she smelled other wolves, which seemed like as good a reason as any to keep going.
As she approached the wolf-smell, she caught the sound of a voice -- another pup, she thought -- talking to...someone. She slowed and peered around, keeping an eye out for whoever might be here.
She was, after all, training as an assassin. She could sneak quietly and invisibly through the shadows, without making a -- crack! -- sound.
Oops.
Startled by the twig she'd just trampled underfoot, the little dappled pup froze in place in the underbrush. Maybe no one would notice.

Tsukiko turned quickly upon hearing the loud noise. Her parents had warned her about predators and she had never been disturbed until tonight. "Who's there?" She growled and looked around quickly.
But in reality she was in complete fear. She wanted to run back to the safety of the den, but then if the creature were to follow her. No. She couldn't think of the awful things that could happen.
She continued to look around until her eyes found the shadow of the other wolf thanks to her bright friend. She felt better that it was only a pup like she was.

"Nobody," Mahui said, and then mentally kicked herself for saying anything.
Some great assassin she was going to be! jeez. Luckily nobody would ever have to hear about this.
Well, not a lot of point left in hiding, she decided. Sighing, she crept out of the bushes. Not like she was going to be 'hunting' this other puppy anyway. "You're out late," she said, stating the obvious as she sized up the other pup. She seemed a little younger than she was, maybe, but not by much.

"Yes, but you should be in bed too." She said with some annoyance. She had heard that line from her brothers and sisters countless numbers of times.
Tsukiko looked at the other pup and frowned. "Your not from around here are you?" She asked the pup who obviously wasn't from her pack. She approached the other pup with caution, ready to jump back if she needed too.
"So what brings you over here to my pack?"

Her ear flicked in annoyance. Who was this pipsqueak, telling her what to do? Hah! Mahui listened to no one. "Yeah, but I'm older," she shot back, not knowing if she really was or not. She came up to the other pup, tail wagging a little uncertainly. "...And pack? What pack is this?"
Had she traveled that far from her home already?

"And I thought my brother was cocky." She muttered while rolling her eyes. This pup was obviously trying to show off to her and she would not let this happen.
"Your in Order of the Rose territory missy!" She growled. "And if you don't tread lightly I'm going to wake up my parents. You don't want to get them angry either. I once heard that another wolf came on to our land and later was found dead in the bottom of a ravine."
"That should make her think twice before saying that stuff." She laughed in her mind.

Dead in a ravine, hm? She clearly didn't know who she was dealing with. Her daddy was the greatest assassin in all the world! She wouldn't take threats lightly!
Except it wouldn't be very sneaky to tell her that.
Still, she didn't want anybody's parents getting involved, because what if then they told her parents, and then she got in trouble? Mahui got in trouble quite enough on her own, she didn't need any help in that regard. "Okay, okay," she said, seating herself on navy-spattered orange haunches. She looked over the other pup again thoughtfully. "I'm sorry."
She didn't know what she was sorry for, but she'd learned it was the right thing to do to apologize when someone got angry. Kept them from yelling at her. "Anyway. Who are you?" And, as an afterthought, "My name's Mahuika."

"Good." She smiled back at Mahuika. "Now that she was a bit more friendly, perhaps I can have a decent conversation with her." She thought.
"Nice to meet you Mahuika. My name is Tsukiko." She says and wags her tail. She seemed a bit more confident than Mahuika. Perhaps it was because she was so close to her parents. That didn't matter.
"Hey you wanna meet a good friend of mine?" She woofs and pads over to where she was by the bush. She looks back at the other pup and motions her to come toward her.
However, in order to get to the bush, the newcomer would have to go pass the mouth of the cave where the other pup's parents slept.

Not really, she thought, but it would be a good idea to pretend. Puppies her are were supposed to be making friends, right? That's what she kept hearing. She didn't really want to make friends, but if she wasn't nice, the other pup would certainly go running to her parents, and that wouldn't do at all.
So, she played nice.
"Okay," she said, and rose back to her paws, creeping behind her. She paused, uncertainly, glancing uneasily at the cave, and then darted forward as quickly and quietly as she could. She did pretty well, she thought.

Tsukiko looked up to the sky and wagged her tail as the other female approached. "This is one of my best friends." She smiled and looked up at the moon. "It hasn't really told me it's name though, so I call it the 'big bright ball.'
She watched the moon for quite awhile, but she didn't dare speak anything to it. Oh no. Not with this other pup around. She feared that the pup might say something mean and then the moon might disappear forever.

"Um." She came up alongside the other, and blinked at her. Was this a joke? She glanced around, making sure nobody was hiding in the bushes to snicker at them. Was she serious? "That's...the moon," she said, then, a little hesitantly. "It's not...does it talk to you?"

Tsukiko glanced over at the other pup. "Moon? Okay." She says excitedly. She looks back at the moon and calls to it. "Moon!"
But unfortunately moon didn't answer her back. "I guess Moon is going to be quiet tonight, again." She sighs, and looks down at her paws. "I don't understand. This is the fourth night in a row it hasn't talked to me."
Tsukiko wondered what else they could do. She could tell that Mahuika had no interest in meeting Moon. "Hey Mahuika, you want to play?" She says with a grin.

"Did he talk to you before?" She asked, brow raised. She didn't find it particularly likely. But, well, she could be surprised, and she had to admit if the moon did actually talk to this other pup, it would greatly improve her opinion of her.
Either way, she felt much more comfortable with the other suggestion. "Sure, I'd love to play." Her head tilted. She didn't want to suggest something, in case the other pup didn't like the idea. Mahuika wasn't sure how other pups played. "...What do you want to do?"

"Well, yes, but it wasn't like we are talking. I always thought the moon usually made the wind blow or something and that would be the answer." She says quickly. The moon never really spoke to her like she wanted it too. Tsukiko looked back at the other pup and thought she saw a pair of eyes looking out of the den.
"I don't know. Maybe we can talk along the way. There's a field along the way we can play in." She whispers nervously. She started off quickly toward the field shortly after she ended her sentence. She never did look back at the eyes.
