Items are objects that may be used for various purposes. Some will restore a Pokemon's Hp or status, others will boost a Pokemon's stats, and some allow players to capture Pokemon.

Potions Potions may be used to restore a Pokemon's Hp or remove a status ailment. These may be used anytime outside of battle. In battle, you may use a Potion when you make your Trainer Action, but this will consume your Trainer Action. Most Potions that restore Hp will require you to roll one or more dice in order to determine how much health they restore.

Pokeballs Pokeballs are used to capture Pokemon, adding them to your roster. Certain kinds of Pokeballs are more effective than others. Using a Pokeball in battle will consume your Trainer action.
