Augustus Rookwood stood in the kitchen of his modest sized home and stared out the window. He enjoyed seeing the snow fall through the tree branches of his fenced in yard. He thought silently about the things that needed to be done today. I should visit the Mistress today when I finish the paperwork that the Dark Lord ordered me to do. He left the kitchen and walked to his office. Three walls were lined with books, while the last was taken up by a large map of Britain. Rookwood sat down at his desk and began reading some of the parchments that were unrolled. Quickly immersing himself in his work.

Scarlet apparated in front of the modest home and pushed through the gate. As she walked up the little path to the front door, she thought about the warnings that both her parents had given her about the man she had previously thought of as a friend and confidant. She knew of his potential in gathering information and that such skills could be thought of as dangerous. She also knew that he was an excellent fighter based on what Thorfinn Rowle had told her and therefore that made him dangerous. Yet, according to her parents, there was still something much more lethal that she was missing.
Upon reaching the front door, she opened her clutch and pulled out a large Manila Envelope that would never have fit into an ordinary purse of that size. She knocked abruptly and waited for Rookwood to answer. A part of her was tempted to simply push the envelope through the mail slot but the information it contained was far to valuable to potentially leave on the floor of an empty house.

Rookwood tossed the parchments that had been reading onto the desk and leaned back in his chair. He smiled at what he had read. The most dangerous? Rodolphus, you really are too kind. A small crouching stone gargoyle on his desk suddenly stood up. Rookwood looked at it bemused, " Who could possibly have come all the way here, today. I am positive that I was not expecting company." He said aloud as he got to his feet and left his office.
When he go to the front door, he opened it casually and leaned against the door jam. His smile broadened as he looked at Scarlet standing on his front porch. "The hearts of men across the country would be breaking if they knew that you were standing on my porch." He spoke with a practiced charm. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this unexpected visit? Would it be business?" He studied her for a moment, "Or pleasure?"

Scarlet smiled broadly at Rookwood, although mentally setting up a guard. "Such a charmer," she smirked. "Its always a pleasure when I get to visit with you Augustus," she said coyly. "Although, this is an official business visit as well."
She held the envelopes toward Rookwood continually studying him as if trying to find a tell about his true personality. "Inside are complete ministry information reports that I have written up for the Dark Lord. They follow all of the heads of the departments, including the minister, as well as any important information that I acquired and felt the Dark Lord would be interested to know. I tried to hand it to him directly, but he is fairly elusive. So, I felt you would probably be best person to give them to since you handle most if not all of the Dark Lord's information anyway, "she finished nonchalantly.

Rookwood took the envelope and opened it, he quickly glanced through the contents before closing the envelope again. "Would it not be better to give this to the Dark Lord himself?" He asked, raising an eyebrow, "After all, you would not want me to get the praise for your hard work." He held the envelope to her inviting her to take it. His smile remained pleasant, but his eyes had a cold, calculating tint to them.
"Forgive me, where are my manners?" He asked softly, "Would you like to come in for a spot of tea, my dear?"

Scarlet raised an eyebrow as Rookwood surveyed the contents of her report. "I already attempted to give it to the Dark Lord directly several times and failed. As such some of the information is a bit time sensitive, so it would be better to get it to him through you than not at all. Besides, I never took you for a snake that would steal my work and portray it as your own," she said bluntly staring him straight in the eyes but with a smirk on her face. "And another thing is you've already seen the contents so regardless, you could potentially already claim the information as your own even with me giving it to the Dark Lord in person. If anything, I'll learn not to trust you based on this experience," she said shrugging.
Scarlet was chilly and decided some tea did sound nice. " Yes thank you. Some tea sounds lovely."

Rookwood listened to Scarlet speak and his smile vanished. "You do not trust me?" He asked, "Have I ever done anything that would cause you to not trust me?" He stared at Scarlet, his face an expressionless mask. Did Rodolphus tell her also that I am dangerous? He thought back to the parchment from earlier that had a written account of a conversation between Rodolphus Lestrange and a turncoat Auror, where Rodolphus had told the Auror to be wary of Rookwood. That he, Rookwood, was the most dangerous spy that the Dark Lord employed.
He moved aside to let Scarlet enter his home, his head bowed. "Although, I do not know what I might have done to lose your trust. We shall save that conversation for a later time. Please come in and make yourself at home." When he raised his head, his smile was back as if it had never left.

Scarlet walked in the door, not sure whether they would have tea in Rookwood's study where they usually sat or in another room.
"You have not done anything as of yet for me not to trust you..." she paused looking down,"I've just had several people warn me not to." She looked up at his face trying to read anything through his mask. "You haven't lost my trust but then you haven't gained all of it anyway either," she finished smiling. "Is it that bad to be cautious?"
She was still holding the envelope in her hands and wondered if Rookwood would take it for her or not.

Rookwood slipped the envelope out of Scarlet's hands and walked down the short hallway to a room to the side of the kitchen. The room had a small dinner table. He tossed the envelope on the table. "I cannot see why anyone would feel the need to give you a warning about me. I am what I am. I do not pretend to be otherwise." He motioned to Scarlet to sit down at the table. "I'll be back with the tea in a moment." He walked into the kitchen, leaving Scarlet alone in the small supper room. One wall had a window that looked out onto the yard at the back of the house, the wall across from the window held a large picture frame of a tired, yet proud wizard that was obviously Rookwood's father. The rest of the room was bare.
Rookwood returned after a few moments and set out the tea, pouring Scarlet a cup before pouring himself one. "I shall make sure the Dark Lord gets your envelope before the day is out." He said as he sat down. "Tell me, who would give you warnings about me?" He asked, looking over his cup at Scarlet as he took a drink.

Scarlet took her tea, enjoying the warmth of the cup in her hands. She took a sip and looked up at Rookwood. She was exhausted from the past few days at home. "Lets just say my family has been having some interesting times lately and much new information about a variety of people has surfaced," she said putting it delicately. She closed her eyes trying to push away a throbbing in her head that had been bothering her for the past few days.
She looked across the table at him measuring her chances for getting a truthful answer to her next question. "My mother told me to ask you about some 'Reaper' project. What exactly is she talking about? "she asked.

"Interesting family times? Are you referring to the return of your grandmother?" He asked, not trying to hide what he knew. "Are you upset that I told Bellatrix of her return?"
Rookwood calmly sipped his tea, until Scarlet spoke the name 'Reaper'. He nearly dropped his cup as he set it down and the color drained from his face. He stared across the table as thoughts ran through his head. "The Reaper is not a project." He was hard pressed to keep his voice steady. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, calming himself. After a moment he looked across at Scarlet and simply said, "The Reaper is a being."

Scarlet drank her tea leisurely enjoying its calming effect. " You just made things a bit more complicated then they had to be by telling her. I'm more annoyed at my mother by her response to learning that knowledge and my uncle..." she just stopped her sentence midway. She hadn't seen nor heard from her father nor uncle in days. She looked into her teacup having already drained its contents. The remains at the bottom reminded her of the absurd divination class she had taken at Hogwarts. If only it were really possible to predict the future with tea...
Scarlet quickly muttered a spell while flicking her wand toward the spilled tea to sop up the spill. She was extremely surprised by his reaction to her question and began to think that she maybe should not broach the subject. However, curiosity got the better of her. "What is the Reaper? What being could inflict such a reaction in a person such as yourself?" she asked wide eyed with a cautious tone. She straightened his cup and poured him some more tea.

Rookwood ignored her comments about the complications that arose because of the information that he passed to Bellatrix. He sat motionless and stared at the wall behind Scarlet. Finally, he broke the silence. "The Reaper is Death." He said quietly. He focused on Scarlet's face, "I came face to face with Death during an experiment many years ago. There have been Death Eaters that have heard stories about what happened. However, only the Dark Lord and I know the whole story. Therefore, Bella not knowing what really went on thinks it is something that is more important and sinister than it really is." He spoke calmly, reluctant to say anymore.

Scarlet stared at Rookwood with a worried expression. His demeanor was so different from his usual self. "Death...." she asked with a hushed tone and confusion written on her face."Are you using that as a metaphor, like you almost 'met' death during one of your experiments...or literally? I mean I've never thought of death as an actual physical being."
Scarlet sat quietly fiddling with her tea cup, "I'm sorry...I wouldn't have asked about it if I had known it would affect you so much," she said sincerely.
