Capturing Pokemon is one of the most important features in Pokemon. Any Pokemon may be captured, even Pokemon who have fainted or Pokemon that are owned by another Trainer. However, keep in mind that these acts are considered illegal and if your character ever gets caught doing them by a Pokemon Ranger, there will be severe consequences.

Your safest bet is capturing a Wild Pokemon.

This thread will demonstrate a Wild Encounter and how one would go about capturing a Wild Pokemon. Keep in mind that most Wild Pokemon will travel in groups, so you won't often find one on its own like in the video games.

Since this is merely a demonstration, there will be only one Wild Pokemon. If you haven't read through the Example Battle thread before venturing here, you should do so. Battling won't be explained here, just Capturing.

Henrike made her way back into the forest after visiting a Pokemon Center as a result of having been defeated by some random Joe who had wandered into her personal space. She simply couldn't accept this defeat and decided that she would do what everyone in the nearby village warned her not to, venture into the deep parts of the forest where powerful Pokemon lived. It would be pretty dangerous, that was for sure, but the martial artist wouldn't accept defeat at the hands of another pathetic Trainer. This would prove to be decent enough training for her Pokemon as well, so she figured things would turn out well in the end and it was worth the risk. Since she had received a decent number of Ultra Balls as a present for her birthday, she figured that her odds of catching something decent would be fairly high.

After wandering into the deeper reaches of the forest, Henrike would notice that the air had become a little heavier and the sky quite a bit more dark due to the thick canopy of leaves and branches. She had finally made it to the place that the village had warned her about. If she focused on her surroundings enough, the young woman would be able to hear something very strange.

Henrike, roll a Wisdom Check of 1d20
DC: 7
McClane rolled 1 20-sided dice: 9 Total: 9 (1-20)

The young martial artist stopped for a few moments, listening to the noises of the forest. Surely she would hear some sort of clue that would lead her towards a collection of Pokemon. One was unable to hear the noise pollution of traffic and civilization this deep within the wilderness. She was thankful that she had come out this far. It was quite refreshing to escape other people for a whole day. To walk and live among the Pokemon was what Henrike loved to do the most. She often debated simply living in the forest and forgetting about traveling back to civilization at all. Henrike listened to the way the wind shook the leaves from their slumber, the way the branches scraped against each other as she thought to herself, 'There has to be some sign....'

Wisdom Check: 9(Dice Result) - 1(Wisdom Mod) = 8 Success!

Occasionally, you will be prompted to roll for certain kinds of checks in order to determine certain events. In this case, the crew member is having Henrike roll to determine whether or not she can hear a Pokemon nearby. DC is short for Dice Check. Henrike must roll above a 7 in this case. The crew member asked her to make a Wisdom Check, so Henrike looks at what her Wisdom Mod is and adds that to her dice total. Unfortunately, Henrike has a negative Mod, so it only hurts her chances. In addition, she only gets one chance at this roll. After she makes her roll, the crew member will respond according to whether or not the Trainer failed or succeeded.

Henrike will be able to hear a distinct chopping noise nearby, as if something was hacking away at a tree with an axe. It was a little surprising that she didn't hear the noise earlier, as it was quite loud. Most Pokemon wouldn't be so reckless in an area filled with predators, so that meant that this Pokemon had no fear of being hunted. If she got close enough, she would be able to see that this noise was being caused by a large green insect that appeared to have blades for hands.

Henrike's heart throbbed against her chest. Scyther was her favorite Pokemon and she had assumed that the rumors of them in the forest were merely a false myth used to scare children of the nearby village. She could clearly tell that this wasn't the case. She quickly decided on which Pokemon to use. It was obvious that the Scyther would be powerful, especially if it was so boldly hacking away at a tree in the middle of the forest. The martial artist figured that it would be best to take the offensive early on and decided to use her Wingull.

The first thing Henrike would do now would be to update her Pokedex, making sure that she checked Scyther off of the list. It's important to use your Pokedex to keep track of Pokemon that you've seen, as it's one of the easiest ways to Level-Up your Trainer.

If she wasn't interested in battling a Scyther, she could merely pass up the fight without having sent out Wingull. She would just have to express that this is what she wanted to do in her post instead of sending out her Pokemon.

Now that she has a Pokemon out, the battle will proceed normally. Since it's the first round, Henrike won't get her Trainer Action and the Pokemon will now use their moves.

It's always a good idea to weaken a Pokemon before attempting to capture them, it will raise the odds of a successful capture. In addition to this, afflicting the Wild Pokemon with any status ailment will also increase the odds of a successful capture. Some ailments increase the odds more than others, but you'll have to experiment to find out which.

If there are multiple Pokemon on the field, each will receive a number. You need to express which one you're targeting. "Sea Wing, use Water Gun on the third Scyther!" If you don't attempt to make it clear which Pokemon you're attacking, your move will be ignored. The crew members will also use this numbering system to make it clear which numbers are injured and which are at full strength. "The first Scyther barely had any strength left, but the fourth hadn't been scratched."

If there were multiple Trainers involved in this Wild Encounter, you should post your Trainer Dexterity when you send your Pokemon out in order to determine the order that everyone will use their Trainer Actions in. The battle won't start until each Trainer in the group has expressed whether they want to participate or not with a post.
