William walked down the halls of the empty academy, enjoying the peace and quiet. 'Soon our first guests will arrive' he thought to himself. He was of anticipating the arrival of his sister, and the Vice Headmaster of Kingswood. Adele wouldn't arrive for some time he was sure. Walking into his office, William sat down in front of the fire. It was a cold January day, but it was bright and sunny.

Erebus Thanatos

Erebus walked through the weak sunlight of the morning, his bare feet making no noise on the stone floor. Dark smoke curled from his long black cloak, which swept over the ground, slightly away from his back due to the speed at which he walked. The air hissed through his nostrils quickly. The blood roared in his ears, and his hands were shaking slightly. Colors blurred together, and his eyes darted back and forth, trying to make sense of it all. Suddenly, a great rising sensation seized him, and he ran to the nearest bathroom, heaving over the sink. He had not eaten in three days, having been too sick, and do there was nothing for him to regurgitate, yet still he stood there, white knuckles gripping the edge of the sink, head bowed, sweat beading on his pale face.
As the moment passed, he lost all strength and collapsed on the floor, shaking. Pulling a small needle from an inside pocked of his coat, he stared at the contents momentarily, trying to remember what it was. Poison, or his release? He could not be sure, but it hardly mattered. He could not. He had to be clean, at least for the opening of the school. A wave of sadness and exhaustion rolled over him as he returned the needle to its pocket and struggled to stand.
Putting one hand on the counter, he heaved himself to his feet and turned on the water, splashing the cold stuff all over his face. His breath coming raggedly, he fell against the wall and slid down it, burying his face in his hands, feeling sick once more.
How much longer can this go on? he thought to himself, blinking hard and trying to bring the room into focus. He reached up and grabbed a towl, wiping the water from his face and hands, then dropped it onto the ground with limp fingers. Summoning up a deeply buried vestige of energy, he cupped his left hand and sparked a deep red flame in his palm. It flickered slightly, shaking with his fingers, then fizzled out entirely. He closed his fist, which was still cold, untouched by the fire, then let his arm fall to the floor beside him. There was hardly any point in continuing on with this. He would be back to his normal self soon, anyway.

"That's right," hissed a voice in his ear. He could swear he could feel the breath on his cold skin, but of course there was no one there. "No need to suffer. You want to be free, to live, to be at peace. You know how to get it. Just let yourself go. It's pointless. You're just hurting yourself." Erebus shook his head and shrouded the whole room in dark shadows, blocking out all light.
"Stop!" He shouted at the darkness, his head jerking up, water droplets flying from where they had clung to the ends of his hair. "You can't do this to me! Begone, fiends!"
Laughter resounded around him, cold, cruel, and horrible; merciless.
"Come now, you know you're no good without us. You need us. Slip away, and we can show you everything. A better world, without pain. You know it's beautiful, where we reside. Come back; we miss you. It's been so long. Come away with us. Be at peace." An overwhelming urge to pull out the needle in his coat pocked consumed him, and Erebus shook, eyes wild and terrified. He could feel the cold presence of them all about him, could feel their fingers on his skin, their teasing lips pressed against his own, suffocating him. Frantically, he ran his hands over his arms and his face, trying to rid himself of their presence, his ears beseiged by their relentless whispers, "Come, come, come..." In the pitch black room, he shivered, hands clenched on his head, skin crawling, shaking hard, unable to breath but in ragged gasps, tears sliding slowly down his nose.

William could feel that Erebus was in the building. He had learned to recognize his emotions, usually wild and uncontrolled. Hurriedly he walked down the hall to the bathroom where he could feel Erebus. William let his powers create an air of calm. "You need help," he said in a way that was neither compassionate or harsh.

Erebus Thanatos

As William entered the room, Erebus felt the whispers subside as his mind was forcefully calmed. He slumped back against the wall, letting the darkness lift to a nice dusk shade, and peered up at the headmaster.
"No," he said slowly. "I'm fine, really." Putting a hand against the wall, he pushed himself upright, then stood, only trembling slightly now. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, blinking hard, pushing the dark thoughts and voices away. He flicked away a bit of water that was clinging to one of his eyelashes, shook his head once, and picked up the towel from the floor, ignoring his dizziness as he leaned over. He replaced the towel on its rack and exited the bathroom, focusing on keeping his hand from straying to his pocket, but not having to fight it as much as he had before. Stopping in the hallway, he mumbled, "Thanks, sir," over his shoulder, embarassed to have been caught in such a state.

"There's no need to call me sir," William sighed. "You've got to pull your act together. I won't always be around to keep you sedated. Students will be expecting you to be a role model."

"Yes..... William," said Erebus. The name instead of the title was strange on his tongue, as the headmaster was his superior, but he did not have the strength to resist at the moment. "Sorry. I don't mean to. It's just hard to stop. It's been so long since my mind was my own...." He trailed off slightly, his gaze becoming distant, memories of flames dancing in his eyes. Then he shook his head. It was behind him. It had to be. He had to let it go...

"If you want help I'm always here," William gave a slight smile. "I expect you know my sister, Adele. She will be arriving soon.." He trailed off mid-sentence.

A beam of light shot through the open doors of the academy. In front of William she materialized. "Will!" Adele gave a squeal of joy. "It's been too long! Oh...." She noticed Erebus. "Hello there," Adele said stiffly. She wasn't warm and cuddly to anyone but her brother.

"Adele," said Erebus shortly, bowing slightly, ignoring the rush that came with each movement, the pounding senation in his head, thankfully dulled by William's magic. He could see she was going to be far more formal with him that she would be with her brother, which was only fair and to be expected. He wasn't the type anyone wanted to have to know; rather he was one thet tried to avoid. He knew that, and knew it was his fault...and theirs.

William noticed a flash of resentment flash across Erebus' emotions, ignoring it he said "So, Erebus, I think you and I should have adjoining offices, that way we can work together to organize everything at Kingswood. There's a room that's perfect for it up ahead." William was ashamed that he didn't have all of the classrooms set up.

Adele quietly observed Erebus. He seemed to have some conflict going on inside him. "I think I will go set up my classroom," She said as she turned and walked off.

Erebus nodded to Adele as she left, then spoke to the headmaster. "Of course, sir-- William," he corrected himself quickly. He had to remember that. As he spoke, a glint of light on the wall caught his eye, and he traced it to a high window at the other end of the hall. Through it, he could see a glimpse of the sky, partially cloud-covered, with weak sunlight filtering down to the school. He blinked and looked away, coming back to the present, and remembering the conversation. Not knowing the way to the offices the headmaster had in mind, he swept out his arm, trails of black smoke curling off his fingers, and said, "Lead the way."

WIlliam nodded as he turned and walked down the hall some ways, and eventually into a large office with a large window overlooking the forest of Kingswood. "Here we are, you get one side of the office, I get the other."

"Right then," said Erebus, surveying the bright room. He could make out many of the details; the large window on the far side, a few bookshelves against one wall, and a cool stone floor beneath his toes. "You pick where you like," he said, not really caring; he would fill his space with darkness anyway, so the features hardly mattered to him.

"Well I guess I'll be taking this desk," William walked over to a desk looking out the window. "If you do use any darkness to blot out the bright light please, don't let it touch me. Darkness.... bugs me." William explained vaguely. His eyes lost in space, his memory going back in time many years.

"Sure," said Erebus, raising his eyes slightly, but not commenting, just filing away the information for future reference. He took the other desk and ran his long white fingers along the dark wood, leaving smoke trails behind that quickly disappeared. Sitting down, he breathed slowly and and filled the air around him with dark clouds, billowing softly, cutting the glare and allowing him to see clearly. He relaxed instantly and glanced over the many drawers which were now his, assigning them to the contents of his pockets and his other belongings, which....
He could not remember where he had placed them. Sighing mentally, he pulled a few needles from his coat and placed them gently in the top drawer, closing it quickly. Poisons went in the other top drawer. Some of the small vials bubbles or hissed slighlty, and he smiled at them. His knives remained in their many sheaths on his belt (three), wrists (two), and back (two), as did his longsword.
Finally, he produced a small box from yet another pocket of his coat. The wood of the box glinted darkly in the light, the frame simple yet elegant, perfectly made so that no cracks allowed one to peer at its contents. Inside were many objects, all of which he cherished above all else, but he did not open it. None could lay eyes upon those things but he. And he would not allow himself access to them until they were gone, for he did not trust them. He did not know what they would do with his past. If they destroyed it... he would be alone, forever. Lost...
