This topic has been visited at various times in the guild so I am making a place specific to it. I have had my moments trying to learn protection for my psyche yet also journey in a mental fashion. Akabi told me to think of my shield as a filter, selectively allowing access to those ideas, threads and spirits that I can trust. I have also done various levels of mental 'push' to keep my mental space clear but this can be somewhat forceful...well, sometimes I do want other people to see it my way!
Most of the time I think of psychic protection as being a matter of interacting with the psyches of other people but the idea of shielding while working with spirits is a reasonable topic, also. I don't have much trouble with spirits, however - I have contact with those that I invite or reach out to. No wayward uninvited guests come bug me as far as I know though I do swear that some people have personal gargoyles or something.

I was told by a few mediums that I was extremely difficult to read. Like they were getting false images or were just simply blocked.
I think this might be part of the effect of having a fae soul attached to mine.

It is reasonable to think that having any other spirit or added layer on your psyche makes it difficult to sort out your divinatory picture. I can see these things acting as a shield even when protection is not their specific purpose.
People can be difficult to read for a number of reasons. I can successfully block another reader, even a very good one - there are times I really prefer my privacy. But it can be complexity, either deliberate or passive shields, a lack of context and connection or even just a totally generic existence. I ran into all of these when I was a professional reader. But you also see lots of things....
