Lesson Eight - Flights around Weyr Dragon size - Seventy percent adult size
Camarith was all strapped and ready to go as they waited on all the Weyrlings gathering together. After so many practices with the ramp, lessons spent working on their take offs and landings it was time for some real flight. None too soon as far as Kila was concerned. The dragons were fine from the looks of things. They flew without theirs as often as they liked now and had done laps with weights before. It was the Weyrlings she was concerned about. Seeing there’s in flight and knowing they couldn’t quite do that was grating, she knew, but they had to be sure the dragons could support their bonded in prolonged flight. The glides from the ramp had begun to grow boring and she was noticing more powered flights above the water.
“Right, today we’re having what you could call your first real flights.” Kila stood in front of the class in riding gear with Camarith behind her. All the Weyrlings were kitted up and the dragons were ready. “We will fly once around the Weyr and land back here. Now, since this is your first flight I will not make you stay in formation. You may fly as you wish, but be careful. Don’t do anything you aren’t completely sure you can do.” The warning had to be given and the likelihood was it would be ignored. One of the reasons Camarith and Kila flew with them was in case anyone fell off or out whilst they were in flight. Another was to check how they were doing and to keep an eye on the dragons flying together. They were getting older now and some were starting to get competitive for attention of the others.
“So, you better get on.” Kila turned away from the group and walked calmly to Camarith, although she could hear the mad scramble to get on dragons and get themselves arranged. Nobody wanted to be left behind on this exercise. Kila climbed onto Camarith, not having nearly as much trouble after years of getting on and off. “Ready? Take off after me and Camarith.” Camarith arched his back and Kila gave one last look at the group on the ground, before Camarith shot upward, soon to be followed by the group of Weyrlings.

C'lyx leaned on Tartuth's shoulder with visible impatience. His hand was already snaking up the dragon's lowered neck, waiting for the order to climb on. His middle finger drummed on Tartuth's neck unconsciously and Tartuth kept grumbling that it tickled. Kila was going over the lesson, the same old stuff. He liked the bit about not keeping in formation. When she gave the order, C'lyx was on Tartuth before she could finish her sentence. This time, he did take Tartuth's leg to get up.
Are you ready? Tartuth asked impatiently. But C'lyx was not going to have their flight together ended early thanks to a fall. He checked and double-checked all of the riding straps. Hold on! Everything feel alright on your end? The straps are quite tight enough, thank you Then we're ready. Let's go. C'lyx held on tight as Taruth leaned back, pulling his muscles together like a spring. When he released, they shot forward. C'lyx kept his head low to Tartuth's back and the wind rippled off of him. Before he knew it they were in the air, gliding easily behind Camrith. C'lyx was expecting worse, but this time Tarturh was taking extra care to make his movements smooth for his rider. Even with all his determination and promises, he still felt like Tartuth had learned more from their last lesson than he had.

Aepeth bent and leaned slightly so that Ayna could climb onto her neck as quickly as possible. Aepeth was peculiarly mobile. Shifting from foot to foot and clearly impatient to be in the air. Ayna knew why. Kila had already alerted her to the reason behind Aepeth's alteration in behaviour. It'd be a while yet, apparently, but she would be a handful for a while until the event had passed. Ayna was unused to this uncharacteristic behaviour. Aepeth didn't spend as much time manipulating the other dragons as simply observing them. Especially the males, although Ayna had noticed a certain hostility toward the other greens.
Do hurry, Aymine. We shall be left behind. The green carried on. Ayna simply shook her head and settled herself in. She gave the straps another check, even if Aepeth thought it pointless. The moment Camarith was off the ground Aepeth launched after him. Taking off with her usual neck-snapping pace. Ayna really wished she would grow out of taking off like that. It looked like she was trying to bite the air in front of her.
Aepeth wasted no time and shot to the front of the group. Just so everyone would be able to see her and how good she could be. The green was far to maneuverable and Ayna had to cling on for dear life as Aepeth felt the need to twist and turn in the air to show off how good a flier she was. Maybe Ayna shouldn't have encouraged her by telling her how impressive she would be if she knew these movements...

A'tan had an excuse for being late if he wished it, he was still considered to be in solitary confinement after all, however in this case it wouldn't be a true excuse. He was late deliberately. His inclination to follow the rules had dropped drastically due to recent events, and he showed up for class when he wanted. If Kila didn't like it or complained, he would shrug and ignore her. She could deal with it. And if she couldn't, it wasn't his problem. Today he was deliberately late because he wanted time alone with Scyllakarth. Recalling the painful week he had endured, relieved only by the mental link that they couldn't sever - no matter how hard they tried, A'tan thought savagely - moments with Scyllakarth were doubly precious to him. By no means had his anger cooled. Thoughts of the weyrwoman were enough to send him into an icy rage these days. In the back of his mind, A'tan was quietly cultivating plans. It was a comfort to him, and he relished the challenges provided. Every way to step around the restrictions, every small step forward towards his goal was like a slap in the weyrwoman's face. He reveled in it. Gloried in it, and dreamed fondly of the day when she would finally realize what had been going on behind her back.
But for now, A'tan had achieved a moment of relative peace. The others had taken off before he'd come out, and he watched them now, pulling his riding gloves on and tugging the riding straps to test for security. Even from here they could see green Aepeth zipping to the front and pulling aerial tricks. A'tan gave her an appraising, half-distracted look, but Scyllakarth was more interested.
She has grown lovely, He said in a contemplative tone to A'tan. She always flies well in practice.
She has no patience, A'tan countered, and a pathological need for attention. Women like that aren't worth the effort: they act like leeches. You'd be better living a life of celibacy.
I like her, Scyllakarth said, unswayed, as if A'tan hadn't answered at all. Aepeth's attitudes had never bothered him, even the day of their hatching he'd been more amused than annoyed by her. A'tan stayed ut of it beyond a comment now and then. If Scyllakarth wanted to attach himself to a clingy, vapid green he was free to do so.
Whatever, A'tan said, climbing up and hitching himself in. He donned his goggles and helmet, feeling the extra warmth gladly, and settled into position with ease. Ready?
Past ready, Scyllakarth said, It has been too long coming! And he launched himself into the air with a surge of powerful muscles. The pair simply flew straight up at first, trying to attain as much height as they could. Kila obviously wasn't keeping the others in formation, so A'tan felt no need to hurry. The executed a few spirals, nothing fancy - Scyllakarth was too bulky to be a flashy flier - but the limited maneuvers were pleasing to the pair. A'tan clung with his knees and swung along naturally with Scyllakarth's motions. He had cultivated their mental bond carefully: doubly so while they'd been separated, so he was quite skilled at reading his brown's intentions. They had no trouble at all. After the first skyward leap, A'tan wasn't even jostled.
They didn't bother trying to catch up. Scyllakarth was usually a very social dragon, but today he was content to spend a few extra minutes on his own with his rider. They buzzed the watchdragon and executed a lazy sweep around the weyr rim: going in the opposite direction as the others. They'd meet up soon enough going towards each other like this, and then A'tan planned to have Scyllakarth simply fall into line.

At first, Taruth and C'lyx kept a steady pace, at the middle-front of the pack. For as long as his attention was undistracted, he was the model dragon, focusing entirely on making sure the ride was smooth and safe for his rider. Unfortunately, his attention was not undistracted for long. A showy green caught his eye, and for once it was more than the skill of her manuvers that attracted him. There was a glint about her.. The ember's of Tartuth mind began to glow. Time to play follow the leader.
C'lyx caught his gaze and instantly saw what he was fixated on. Tartuth, you're not.. Do you think you can hold on? Tartuth asked, fakely sincere. Because he knew it would antagonize him in just the way. Hold on? Just who do you think is riding you, dimglow? I can do more than just hold on. C'lyx paused. He stood up slightly in his straps, watching the green, watching her movements. I know how to catch up. Come on. C'lyx relayed his thoughts to Tartuth and with a few quick ducks and dives, they were right behind Ayna and Aepeth. C'lyx held onto Tartuth's neck tight, getting as low to it was possible. Though perhaps his movements weren't quite so quick or agile, he began to mimic Aepeth as best he could, liking this new game he invented. Yet all the while, waiting for an opportune moment.
C'lyx could feel that he was beginning to grow bored with simply following, yet there was an over-pleased edge to his mind touch that implied otherwise. What? C'lyx asked. He knew that touch, Tartuth was planning something. He was waiting to play a trick. Nothing. This is follow the leader after all. So? So- Now it's my turn! Tartuth took off at break-neck speed, just as Aepeth was recovering from a dive, leaving his stunned rider to grab on before he fell off. He surged forward, meaning to overtake and get in front of Aepeth, (become the new "leader") but whether she would let him was another matter.

Ayna had managed to adjust to Aepeth's movements and focused to pay attention to feeling the way she moved and predicting the direction and movements she would take. With her rider becoming more confident, Aepeth was becoming more daring. As she pulled up from a dive she noticed Tartuth overtake her.
Expecting her to hiss and get angry at the blue Ayna got ready to sooth her dragon, only to be stopped short when Aepeth did not get angry at all. Instead the green continued her movements, behind Tartuth this time.
Tartuth. The croon that Aepeth let out caused Ayna to look at her with in disbelief. She had got on the right dragon, hadn't she? Aepeth never, ever spoke to anyone like that. He usual hiss cmopletely lacked it's malice and lurking feel and Ayna found that concerning.
Silly blue. Aepeth darted higher and glided above Tartuth for a moment, before abruptly closing her wings. She rolled in the air and shot down in front of him, for a moment Ayna feared they would collide, but Aepeth simply twisted out of the way. Opening her wings again she took her place in front again.
I lead, you follow.

For a while, Aepeth let him keep his lead, but Tartuth was always wary that she would try to take it back. He wouldn't be a bad sport, he decided, he would let her. But he would make her work for it. In that spirit, he kept glancing back, making sure to stay in front of her to block any attempt to overtake. Yet distracted, partially by her voice, he didn't notice how high she climbing until he looked back and she wasn't there. He looked up, and she was right above, preparing for a dive. At first Tartuth surged forward, determined to keep his lead, even against her dive.
Yet if it was a game of chicken (wherry? lol) Aepeth was playing, then she definitely won. At the last moment Tartuth eased up, tilting his wings to catch the wind and slow him down to prevent them from colliding. Since the blue was usually reckless to the point of being dangerous (only his great skill keeping him from ever hurting himself with his stunts) C'lyx was surprised he was willing to give in. Was it because he was carrying a passenger this time? Cal doubted it, since the blue was just about ignoring his presence completely. In the end, it didn't matter, because Aepeth twisted away at the last second, preventing collision anyway, yet increasing her lead considerably.
C'lyx was likewise surprised to find that Tartuth was not upset. In fact, he was laughing, delighted at that last trick. You win. he conceded joyously. For now! he added as his only indication he was not entirely giving up. And indeed, just because he was willing to follow didn't mean he wasn't also willing to tease. He continued to playful creep up on her, so that at some points the two were flying right next to one another. When they did, C'lyx apprehensively took a hand off Tartuth and waved to Ayna, wondering if she found this as bewildering and nerve-wracking as he did. Both dragons seemed to be largely ignoring their riders, leaving them to hold on for dear life. At least it was good practise. We wouldn't let you fall. Tartuth said simply, the only words he'd spoken to C'lyx the whole flight.

At a point where Aepeth and Tartuth were flying side by side Scyllakarth met the group. Flying straight towards them in his chosen flight path, an idea came to him for some mischief making. He knew exactly how bitter A'tan had become towards any and all restrictions, and was willing enough to please his rider. A harmless bit of troublemaking wouldn't get them in too deep today. Playfully trilling, Scyllakarth made as if to climb higher in altitude and sail over the group then, as Aepeth, Ayna, C'lyx and Tartuth passed below him he dove: aiming straight as an arrow for the space between them. There was only just enough for him to get safely by, and aside from potentially startling them Scyllakarth knew he'd do no more harm than stirring their clothing in a strong rush of air.
A'tan laughed to himself, the wind catching the sound and blowing it away. Ah, Scyllakarth. He leaned forward as they leveled out, now far below the group and making a sweeping turn to catch up with them. Stroking his brown's neck, A'tan shook his head. Every now and then they would surprise one another. Usually pleasantly. this was one such occasion. Bulky Scyllakarth might be, but he wasn't exactly deadweight in the air: even if finer acrobatics were beyond him.

Forever. Aepeth called back as she broke into another round of acrobatics. She was immensely confident that she could beat any of the dragons here when it came to her tricks. Ayna clung tightly to her, the greenrider had been sure that she was securely attached to the green before taking off. Their first flight hadn't managed to put Aepeth off at all and every chance at flight the green had sought to test Ayna with her most impressive moves in the air. Ayna was good at reading Aepeth's motions now and no longer needed to be alerted that she was about to pull off a stunt.
A trill caused both rider and dragon to look around at who had joined in with the game. Aepeth let out a pleased sound at the sight of Scyllakarth. As he shot down between herself and Tartuth she let out a happy sound. Someone else was willing to join in with her game, she would still win though. Brown or no he would still lose to Aepeth. Ayna patted the green's shoulder as if to reinforce the statement.
Scyllakarth, Aepeth purred to the brown. Well, that was proof it wasn't favouritism of Tartuth. Was she going to be like this with all dragons they came across? How can you possibly expect to win if you are all the way down there? You will not be able to see me. Aepeth whispered it to Scyllakarth as though she didn't want Tartuth to know she was speaking to him. She sounded rather sad at the idea of him not being able to see her, but Ayna couldn't help but wonder about Aepeth questioning him wanting to win. It sounded like Aepeth was training them for a game of her own and that was worrying. Of what Ayna had seen of Aepeth's plans so far anything that took this much forward planning could not possibly be a good thing.

C'lyx was surprised. Even Aepeth's haughtiness didn't seem to bother Tartuth today. Only at the sound of the trill did a quite flash of red swirl in his eyes as he turned to see who would be so rude as to interrupt their fun.
As they both looked up, Scyllakarth and A'tan dove past them so close that C'lyx had to grab onto the riding straps tight to keep the wind from off-setting his balance. The trick succeeded in ruffling Tartuth's feather, but only managed to ruffle C'lyx's clothing. In fact, he was laughing.
Stupid brown.. Tartuth grumbled, one of his favorite phrases these days, it seemed. Don't be sour. That was funny. Cal chided, and he waved down to them, to show his lack of animosity for the pair. C'lyx had indulged Tartuth's dislike of Scyllakarth for long enough. They'd be flying together a lot from now on, they may even end up on the same fighting wing, it was about time they started working together instead of against each other.
Unfortunately, Tartuth didn't see it the same way. His mind was growing hot in anger from the perceived insult and now he felt like punishing C'lyx too for taking their side. Yeah? We'll see how funny it is. he sanpped, making a sudden dive. C'lyx, who was quite unprepared (and Tartuth knew this!) scrambled to hold on as the blue roared downwards.
Pulling an 'Aepeth', he dove straight for the brown, but peeled away at the last minute. He flew a wide loop around Scyllakarth, rising half-way to his original height before stopping. Tartuth! I nearly fell off you- you wherry headed.. C'lyx floundered, looking for an appropriate insult. Tartuth was unconcerned. Hmph, not so funny now, is it?
C'lyx fumed, but Tartuth was ignoring him to glance up at Aepeth from below. He wasn't just upset at C'lyx, but at her too for not paying attention to him. His chest rose and fell heavily, but he looked up at her with a smugly determined look, like he was saying 'see if he can do that!'

Ayna found that Aepeth was far more interested the movements of Tartuth and Scyllakarth than she would usually. Usually the green was dismissive of other dragons and apart from occasionally pointing out the she was better than them, ignored them. It was strange then to note how intently Aepeth was paying attention to the two that were taking part in her game. Ayna was certainly noting that Aepeth seemed more fond of those two right now than any other dragons in the class that were either playing their own games or simply flying for the fun.
Both green and rider looked down sharply when Tartuth made his sudden dive. Ayna was wondering what on Pern the blue was up to? Why was he diving at Scyllakarth like that? Aepeth on the other hand seemed less concerned. She let out a soft croon at the movement and Ayna had to question why. He did that for me, Aymine. Aepeth said with immense satisfaction.
What makes you say that? Ayna felt the need to question. It seemed more that the blue was doing it to spite the brown, rather than for Aepeth. It wasn't like Scyllakarth had done anything to Aepeth. But considering that once he'd pulled off his stunt the first thing he seemed to do was look at Aepeth, Ayna had to concede that Aepeth may well be right.
When the Tartuth looked at Aepeth she let out a pleased trill. Turning in the air she glided down toward Tartuth and flew under him, letting out a contented hum, before flying back upward and away from both brown and blue. My silly blue. Aepeth thought to herself as she flew far more lazily now.

Properly consoled, Tarturth relaxed. He continued to breeze through the air, swinging left and right lazily, but ceased his ambitious acrobatics. I'm getting a little tired. he admitted. It's what you get for showing off. C'lyx said sternly. He was determind to stay mad at Tartuth, but finally his concern took over, and he asked, Will you be alright for the rest of the flight? Yes. I'll just take it easy for a while. He looked at Aepeth and Scyllakarth and an unreadable expression crossed his face. I think I'll leave them to their play. he decided. C'lyx wondered why, when he was so adamant for her attention a moment ago, he suddenly seemed to have lost interest. Perhaps he thought his point had been made (whatever it was in the first place) or maybe he prefered to be the one to leave, rather than be left behind. This was fun. Let's play again soon. he said with more meaning than Cal could interpret.
As he drifted back into the middle of the pack, he briefly watched Aepeth and Scyllakarth from behind, but soon got bored and lost focus. Now that they were alone, he began to once again pay attention to his neglected rider. Are you mad, Mine? I was only playing. His voice was truly apologetic. Forgive me? No more stunts like the last one? Cal made him promise. For the whole rest of the flight. Well, that was good enough, Cal thought. Anyway, it was nearly impoossible to stay mad at Tartuth for long. Even as C'lyx said he forgave him, Tartuth's eyes swirled blue with an overly happy grin on his face. I'm glad.
