So, my lappy has to run windows (however much I hate to run it) to run a bunch of my games, and even on Windows, it gets choppy sometimes on WoW and Starcraft 2. what i'd like to know is what hardware would be recommended for a Linux gaming computer that runs Windows games at least decently. anybody know?

I've looked up the games i'd run on WineHQ, and they run comparatively well compared to most others, they're listed in the lists as either Bronze, Platinum or Gold. so the games aren't the problem for this lappy running only one of them without be unplayable. it's the hardware.

the OS I intend to use is Ultimate Edition 2.8 64-bit (either Gamers or regular)

any advice here would be appreciated. I've been running Linux for about a year now, started with Ubuntu.

Personally I try to avoid gaming on a laptop they tend to lack powerful enough hardware to really do so. As for running running Windows programs under Linux the hardware you are running is not as important as how well the program is supported under Wine, you can throw thousands of dollars at hardware but if the program is rated as Garbage under Wine its not going to help you any. To make running Windows software under Linux easier there are several helper programs for wine some include: CrossOverwith a "Games" spin off, Play on Linux, Winedoors (looks like this project is dead), Winetricks*

Also note that under the WineHQ Bronze is very grey grounds, a program can get marked as Bronze if it installs, runs, but very broken. You may not have sound, the screen my not show anything that involved the color of green, etc... use it more as a reference as to what to expect rather than a guide (if your version of wine differs from the ones the program was tested with there is a change things may be even more broken for you).

I haven't heard of Ultimate Edition before, but it looks like it is yet another Ubuntu spin off, and unless they fixed apt then I have very little respect for it (I had apt mess up one to many installs). At least openSUSE worked until I wiped out my entire /var directory working on my system at 2 in the morning sweatdrop

*Note if you go the route of Winetricks please head their warning:

Winetricks
Note: Although using winetricks may be very useful for getting some programs working in Wine, doing so may limit your ability to get support though WineHQ. In particular, reporting bugs may not be possible. See Reporting bugs after you have used Winetricks below.

Not to mention I had done my research on my games, the ones i want to play (and have) run at worst as a Silver level, and are hardly touched anyway (thanks to World of Warcraft,) so I've done my research on the linux Compatibilities. the only Bronze game I have (Halo) is one I don't actually play anymore as I beat the campaign and lost the CD Key, and as far as I read, Halo is nigh unplayable on Linux.
