Yuqui clicked the on switch of the portable fan. It was so hot, even the flies decided to join her next to the machine. Suddenly the thing spluttered and the wind ribbons fell limp down the fan rails. "Wha...?" She frownd and tapped it with her flashlight. No use. Even the poor fan was too hot to work. She groaned, "You'd think Akea would sell things that actually worked..." Giving the fan a sharp tap, she slowely rose from her sticky seat and got her umbrella.

The desert like outskirts of the machanic city was not exactly the most comfortable place to live, but it was quiet at the very least. The cities and towns were beginning to become overcrowded these days. She looked at her watch. Noon. The sun was right above her now. Good thing she brought her umbrella. Smiling at the little triumph, she climbed up a small ledge on a knoll to watch the city. Sand swirled at her ankles.

Yuqui froze. Impossible. She didnt even then the 'wind' existed here. Turning around, she watched, a little bewildered as a dust devil no taller than a bush wiz past her. "Okay..." It stopped, swirling in place. Did those things do that? Without warning, it began wizing back torwards her! Yuqui screamed and began running. It was faster. In no time at all, the dust devil swept caught the umbrella in its whirl and Yuqui with it. She couldn't let go.

A slam. A door closing? She looked around the hot room, her hands were sticky... What happened? Remembering, she shot her eyes to the doorway, a trail of sand led from her torwards the door. The door was shut, but the slam she had heard came from something else. Her umbrella was still outside, throwing itself against her small house. A dust storm. She could barely see beyond three feet. She was a little scared. This never happened before...

Ten minutes past, just as it started, the dust storm was gone. Yuqui blinked a few times to make sure everything was still real. She stepped outside cautiously. Her tattered umbrella stuck from the ground like a preening, white flamingo. Then her eye caught at the strange shape on the ground. No, it wasn't a pebble. Curiously drawn to it, she sank down next to it, careful not to touch the hot ground. Reaching out a hand, she gently poked it... and smiled.
