Steampunk seems to of taken a more mainstream turn in recent months and the feelings have been very mixed from what I've seen. Which is understandable when bands such as Sugarland and Rush take on SP influences for their stage shows. How do you feel about steampunk being more popular?
I personally thought it would be cool at first. But I've also noticed a surge in elitism. Seriously. It's no fun when people are always trying to outshine you. :/

I don't really mind. Been into it for so many years (around '02...God, I'm old), but I rarely dress the part or let SP bands dictate my taste in music. Some people are snobs, some people just toss on goggles and go with it. More power to all of them, the more people to share my interests, the better.

hmm i can say that i personally am a hardcore steam punk fan Ive liked since about 2006 i do dress up on occasions but if more people want to start getting in to it thats all well and good as long as they respect the people who have been in it longer then them i dont know how many times i get somebody trying to tell me something I'm writing or wearing isnt steampunk when they only started liking it that year it kind of annoys me

Although I must say being more mainstream tends to take the "Punk" out of things, I wouldn't mind having a few bits <- [Read: Good goggles] be cheaper or easier to find. And even with peoples tendency to be elitist and annoying, you'll always be able to tell the oldschool steampunks, they'll be the ones still around after the popularity fades.

The punk was only ever put in steampunk because the genre started from apocalyptic literature though I was for steampunk becoming mainstream until I saw the new Panic! At The Disco song music video where they dressed u p quite steampunk but somehow thought that steampunk only was a fashion thing as their music was definitely in no way whatsoever steampunk

honestly, I think this is all very premptive. Steampunk is entering the 'mainstream' of the world outside of the mainstream. I think it's really cool that rush is picking it up but they are not concidered mainstream by anyone that has the standard 'taste in music'. Most people I talk to go, "Who is Rush?" and when I say Tom Sawyer they go, "Oh! I've played that song on rockband!" so I honestly don't think that steampunk is getting anywhere close to the mainstream. The most mainstream I have seen steampunk in is the last two Fable games, but again most people don't even recognize it as steampunk. I think it's really cool and good that it is entering the mainstream of popular fiction, but I don't think it'll ever get passed that

Elitism seems to exist in everything and everywhere, so it's quite doubtful that it has anything to do with whether or not Steampunk is becoming "mainstream". Most of the people I've encountered (and I'm talking +90%), who have identified themselves with SP, all have been some of the nicest people I've ever met and such things have actually helped me get into the scene even more so than anything else, however many years ago that was, when I first began attending the annual gatherings/balls around my area.
@ Nostrus - I'm not sure if merchandise being mass produced is actually a good thing. Last Halloween I saw some Steampunk "goth" goggles that were downright atrocious. Besides, the stuff you make on your own always looks the best since it expresses individual creativity.

I think to an extent it has hit mainstream. Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOgpdp3lP8MPanic! At The Disco and the League of S.T.E.A.M. are working together in this video. Elitists make me cry actually. I was snubbed by some steampunkers at a con because I didn't have the money yet to make an outfit of my own, so they wouldn't look at my jewelry. Elitists suck a lot. Mainstream is mainstream, it's not gonna stick around long. People are flighty and the next trend for the pretty world will come along soon and we'll have steampunk to ourselves again.

I have to say, I kinda like that Steampunk is becoming more mainstream. Being poor, I don't have the funds to dress the part and make my own outfit. But now that some items are, while cheapy and not original, are still nice looking and easy to obtain.
As for elitists, they are everywhere. It doesn't matter what they are interested in, they just don't know how to let people have fun. Best just to ignore them.

::: Don't bother me, long as I don't get bashed on for no reason. Or for my steam inventions and my tiny work shop DX then I would have to throw a beat down lol kidding... But it's like anything, Gothic, Lolita, etc, it comes and goes and you always have a p***k or two in the crowd. Ignore the rich kids and remember the true steam-punkers. Also: Haters gonna hate. :::
