Contralto in a Corset

So, I may be completely wrong about this, but I thought it'd be interesting to look up the etymology of the word 'marriage', to take a look at its oh so sanctified roots. I found the Wiktionary link on it.

Marriage from the Old French mariage, from latin maritare(to give in marriage), from maritus, from mas(or, just 'Man').

And if I'm reading this right, doesn't that basically mean, "Giving to Man"? The word 'Marriage' is essentially derived from a business transaction, where the Groom gives the Father of the Bride a goat, or 20 silvers, or a Horse, or a howdee ******** doo or whatever, and the Father gives the Bride to the Groom? Is this what I'm seeing?

Thoughts, corrections, mindless flaming, please?

A thought to add. At several points in my span on Gaia, I have argued that very topic of marriage. Many seem to think that it is a Christian only concept, when I found proof for marriage being in Judaism, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and some other cultures. For the denial of these other faiths to marry or not marry a couple based upon the skewed teachings of one group of a faith is, in my opinion, not an act of Agape.

Didn't Christ do the water to wine thing AT A WEDDING? Thus implying pretty strongly that they precede the Christian faith by, oh I dunno, long time?

Plus, I've been to Japanese Weddings, as well as a couple of Hand Fastings. Pretty sure they weren't Christian, either.

Well they must have been Christian. Didn't you know? Everything is Christian and if you don't say you are, then you are assumed to be one. Unless you are an atheist. Then you are just an irreligious douche.
