"The piranha hunt in packs. The first bite draws blood, blood draws the pack."
This movie is a remake of a B comedy-horror film made in 1978 about a school of Piranha who escape from a military installation and terrorize a summer camp and it's inhabitants. Basically this movie was ment to be a parody of 'Jaws'.
In this one, an underwater earthquake causes ravenous prehistoric fish to emearge from a cavern and prey on the inhabitants of a small town during spring break.
Now when you remake an old sci-fi film it's usually a 50/50 chance of either being better or not as good as the original. How was this one? Granted the original is no masterpiece, but this one...Well......Let me put it this way:
main titles, earthquake, prehistoric fish come out, eat man, boobs, character set up, boy gets job guiding girls gone wild knock-off director to the best spots in town, boobs, people investigave underwater, get eaten, Christopher Lloyd cameo, boobs, boy and friends as well as a spring break celebration terrorizied by piranhas, tons of blood, carnage, death, and did I mention boobs?
....Yeah
I'm sorry, is this a movie about Ravenous fish or a grindhouse movie? Now, the original did have nudity in it. But in there the scenes were very brief (one scene was actually played for a laugh) and didn't dominate the movie.
In the new one, it practically devours the movie more then the Piranhas themselves.
This one is also very, very, very gore-heavy. I'm not even going to begin to describe some of the things that happened. Just look at IMDB's parents guide.
I did think it was cool how the Piranha in this movie were changed into prehistoric fish who were far more aggressive then their modern day cousin's (actually Piranha's are actually more scavengers then hunters and they rarely attack humans) and I honestly wanted the movie to be more about the awareness of the Piranhas and what the people intend to do about them.
But unfortunatly, this film went for quantity over quality. Now, I don't mind violence or nudity in films, but if thats all that they have to offer and nothing else, then they're pretty much doomed in my eyes. It overshadowed the main story of the original. So, this one was pretty dissapointing.
Final Rating: 4/10
Oh, and the ending sucks.
I'd advise just sticking with the original if ya can find it. Or just watching Jaws.
