We talk a lot in this guild about herbal medicine, but what about other alternative therapies? Massage, acupuncture/pressure, chakra manipulation, color therapy?
Discuss: Alternative therapies other than herbalism.

Don't forget aromatherapy. ^^ Different smells have the power to relax or excite a person.

Kyoki Marie We talk a lot in this guild about herbal medicine, but what about other alternative therapies? Massage, acupuncture/pressure, chakra manipulation, color therapy?
Discuss: Alternative therapies other than herbalism. I have used massage and pressure point therapy on my mom for years. She has issues with the muscles around her right scapula. ((For those who haven't taken an anatomy class, the scapula is the bone commonly called the shoulder blade. It's the big slab of bone just below the shoulder on your back.)) It may not be able to fully heal the dammage done to the muscle itself, but it relieves pain and helps to prevent headaches. Other than that, I use chakra manipulation on myself. You have to do it through deep meditation, because it's basically knowing the rythem of the energy in your body (through the nerves and cells), and being able to consciously change it's flow. It's much harder to do on other people unless you put them into a semi-meditative state (like how you are all relaxed during and after a massage.); and even then, you have to be able to feel or see the enrgy movment in their body. I know, it sounds all wierd and complicated. And it can be. But for some reason, I've always had the gift of being able to see people's souls (auras, chakras, and personalities). Some people have it, some people don't. Like playing the violin!

What's some good examples of aromatherapy that you can give? Well. . . I know a few if you would like me to share. biggrin Well, of course. XD And I've got the same "visualization" gift you have. It's not a common gift. My mom has it, but she surpresses it because it freaks her out. But anyway! Treatment of any sort that's done with aromatherapy is based on the paitent's reception of scents. So each person is different, making it an unrealistic form of treatment. But aromatherapy can be used in conjunction with chakra manipulation, meditation, massage, reiki, and pressure point therapy in order to relax or "open up" the paitent's energy to treatment through these methods. I think of it kinda like how surgeons use anesthesia to prepare a paitent's body for an operation. It just makes it easier to work with someone who's relaxed. Also, for mental treatment (ie: therapy, meditaion to repair trauma, self-treatment through chakras, etc.), aromatherapy is very useful. It connects the carnal senses with emotions and memories. If you can redirect the sense, in many cases you can re-write the emotions or the memories attached to it. Cool, huh?

Sort of like how the smell of burned things (like house-fire burned things, not wood smoke) or propane make me violently ill, even without the physical effect- because of past trauma, but chocolate and pumpkin pies automatically make me feel comfortable and safe because of growing up around them?
I think that makes sense- I've been looking into the placebo effect and the idea that the mind has near complete control over the body. I've noticed that if you -tell- someone that, say... the smell of roses will help them feel better, it works much better than someone who's smelling the same scent, but without the verbal affirmation of it's power.

I know a thing or two about color *psychology* but a bit less about how it is applied in therapy. There have been studies showing that we have real physiological and psychological effects when exposed to different colored lighting. Here's what I've dug up through the years (that I can remember off the top of my head, anyway):
Exposure to Red Light --- increases blood pressure --- speeds up reaction time --- makes objects appear longer and bigger --- causes one to overestimate time --- makes one feel as if the room is warmer
Exposure to Blue Light --- decreases blood pressure --- slows reaction time --- makes objects appear shorter and smaller --- causes one to underestimate time --- makes one feel as if the room is colder
All in all, Red is a stimulant and Blue is a relaxant.

Monkshood is a deadly poison that works very fast, best to keep away from it altogether. Best to call poison control and follow their instructions. >> It's one of those plants that's listed in my book with a big red warning saying "DO NOT MESS WITH THIS PLANT!"
I wonder, what does yellow or green do, then, if blue and red are relaxing and stimulating? Or what about neutral colors, like beige or such?

I personaly love chakra healing, and when I can't get to sleep, there's this really relaxing chakra mediation, where you imagine yourself as being each of the chakra colors (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet), and imagine a rainbow of those colors going everywhere through space, and then imagine it as white light, and you are white line, and you expand through space, and then you slowly come back.
There are others where you imagine the colors, but they are at the chakra points. It's good stuff.
