Greetings and Salutations everyone, After a long in depth review and a break for the Superbowl, I decided to make my next review something fun. And when I think fun, I immediately think ANIME!
I love anime, been watching it for over 15 years now. And there never seems to be a shortage of different types. So for this topic, I've selected at random two anime series I've never seen before, watch the first 5 episodes of each, compare them, then determine which one was the better series or the winner. So lets get started.
QUEENS BLADE- This series is a fantasy series which takes place in a far off land where once every four years a tournament is held between the strongest women in the land, the winner becomes the Queen and rules over all. The series follows four different women in their separate adventures. Leina, a middle child of a noble family who runs away in an attempt to escape her fate of taking over as the next count. Risty, a bandit who wants to win the Queens Blade tournament so she can help an orphanage. Tomoe, a warrior Priestess who want to win the tournament so she can avenger her fallen comrades. And Shizuka, a ninja who defected from her evil ninja order to assist Tomoe in her quest to win the Queens Blade Tournament.
I found the premise of the series interesting, it had potential, but the series fails to tell an effective story, or have any meaningful character development due to an over the top display of T&A. Granted I love scantly clad and sexy anime women as much as the next anime geek. But all in moderation. All the important elements a series needs for proper development takes a back seat to the amount of cleavage shown. And I found it impossible to showcase strong female characters and develop them properly when the series only interest is finding ways to show them naked. We as the viewers don't see these female characters as characters, but just as objects who thrust their ginormous breast into the camera lens just to please some horny fanboy... or fangirl for you ladies who like that sort of thing. And I find it disappointing for a series which has promise, and potentially likable charters, only to have both be hurt by making the series as close as you can get to being a hentai, all you need is one official sex scene and it will be there.
VanDread- A sci fi series which takes place in a distant future. After mankind leaves earth to colonize different planets, men and women get into a huge war and decided to separate once and for all. Men went ott to inhabit one planet while women inhabit another. Over the years the two forget that they were part of the same species and see each other as nothing more than Aliens. After a crew of Pirate women steal a top secret Male ship, the battle between men and women send the female pirates and the mens ship far away, roughly 1 light year away from their home. The women after the battle have three male prisoners. Hibiki, a third class citizen and mechanic (He is also the protagonist of the series). Duelo, an intelligent doctor, and Bart, a first class citizen who becomes a helmsman. The three men are taken prisoner by the women, but when they all encounter an alien race which wants to harvest humans and are on a direct course to the women's home planet, the men and women must work together to beat the aliens back to their home worlds and warn them of the incoming danger.
This is a more comical series which plays off the awkwardness between men and women as they re-discover each other. It becomes a battle of the sexes played out in a humorous manner that include a lot of sexual innuendo's. The main example of this is when they find out that the men's fighter called a Vanguard, can merge with a women's fighter called a dread, and it turns into a more powerful ship. The women go crazy over this idea of merging their ships with the mans ship to see what the resulting combination would look like. At first the women fight over Hibiki and wanting him to "Combine with them" After a while combine is dropped and they at times just say, "Do it with me" while another woman will get jealous and want Hibiki to "Do it with her" instead.
Unlike Queen's Blade, the adult humor is played out to compliment the series and help tell and advance the story, making it more enjoyable than just finding ways to show off large breasts. Because the series doesn't show off the women as sexual objects we can connect with them and see them as actual characters with proper development rather than being just eye candy.
Queen's Blade wants to pass itself off as an action fantasy, it's over the top use of naked women however hurts the series and makes it more of a soft core Hentai than action fantasy. Vandread promises action comedy and sci-fi mechs, and it delivers. Proper balance of innuendo's and sexual humor to make it funny, and it intertwines with the story well.
I'll admit that when it comes to Genre's I enjoy Fantasy animes more than sci-fi mech ones. But every once and a while a futuristic sci-fi series will come by that will be superior to a fantasy series. This is one of those times.
