Genetics of Superpowers
Several genes influence superpowers; various ones decide what your power is, how it manifests, etc. but the main one is the one that decides whether or not you'll have a power at all. This gene (SH-1) is dominant, so if you have it from either parent, you will definitely have a superpower.
The superpower you have seems to be determined or influenced by three things: 1. Your personality and skills (as far as determined by your DNA). - Powers normally match the personality of the person they belong to (when there is a biological reason for the personality trait), e.g. people who are predisposed to athleticism are more likely to have powers like super-strength or super-speed. 2. Your parents' superpowers. - Families often have similar powers, and if both parents have very different powers the child often has a mixture of both. In some cases the child will have a power that is similar to both, but is a completely different power altogether (see 'Random genetic mutation'). 3. Random genetic mutation. - This is when the genes passed down mutate, which is how the superpowers genes arose in the first place. This can happen with the genes determining the individual powers (e.g. the genes passed from two parents with superheroes sometimes mutate, combining to give a whole new power) or with the gene affecting whether or not the person has superpowers (e.g. when somebody whose parents don't have superpowers, has superpowers.)

The Shield
The shield was originally invented by Bethan James-Blake in 2006 as a standard security system which detected intruders and sent wireless alerts to the mind of whoever controlled it, which were received by a small microchip under their skin. (This actually only amplified the mental signature of the user so they were easier to send telepathic alerts to). She sold the prototype to the Parker School for Gifted Students, and upgraded it when she became a student. Currently, it performs the following functions: - Detects anybody who comes within 2 mile radius of the school and monitors them. - Scans mental signatures of trespassers for evidence of powers, for authorisation, and for intent. - Those with authorisation (including students) are allowed to continue, those who intend to find the school or who have powers are redirected to the gates, and all others are redirected away from the school altogether. (Redirection is done by persuasive telepathy). - Alerts relevant staff (usually the headmistress) telepathically of visitors and new students. - Hides the school from unauthorised satellite and aerial surveillance.

The Mainframe
This is both the main computer directory and the device used to transmit data to the minds of authorised personnel. It was developed to complement the Shield and its software. It uses the same telepathic field as the Shield to allow authorised users* to access all of the files on the school mainframe, including student data files and records of trespassers recorded by the Shield. Special access can also be granted in emergencies.
*of which there are currently 3; Bethan James-Blake, Haruhi Yami, and Ava Storm.

Teleport Pad
Created by Bethan James-Blake and Haruhi Yami around 2007. There are several of these around the school, which aren't for student use. They can be used to go anywhere unshielded, or can be used to send a person to another pad, which can be anywhere. To prevent misuse, they can only be used by those authorised by the mainframe.

LRTA
LRTA stands for Lifelike Robotic Teacher-Assistant. LRTA is a robot, designed and built mostly by Bethan James, but with help from several other students. Her main function is to teach classes without teachers, and to provide a portable link to the database, so students (and teachers) can ask questions about the school which don't require authorisation. Normally Loretta (as she's been nicknamed) stays in the school office when she's not teaching, but occasionally she will show new students around. She has a telepathic link to the mainframe and has mild mental powers, including a personal shield to protect her from harm.*
*In accordance with Asimov's third law of robotics. LRTA was programmed with all 3 laws.
