Deep into the Renaissance period, there was a family of very wealthy Noblemen living deep in the remote Russian wilderness. They have all that they need, but company. Life marches on, babies are born, peasants are slain, but for this small family of nobility, they are forever trapped in their little bubble of obviousness, of their own spell. Join us, then, as we sneak a peek into their private musings, their triumphs and their failures, and if we're very lucky, perhaps we'll see them break the spell?...

Rules of Engagement

XXX► Gєηєɾaℓ
So, first off; follow the Gaia ToS. You do this everywhere else on Gaia, so it shouldn't be so hard to do it here too. Please respect the other roleplayers here, be polite and kind. Follow the golden rule; treat others how you would like to be treated. Keep swearing to a minimum (in posts and OOC). Also, no god-modding, powerplaying, auto-hitting, ect. And absolutely no cybering! This is a PG-17 roleplay, and if you violate this rule, or any of the rules for that matter, I will ban you from this roleplay! (-Cough-Mollie-coughcough-) And I can reject your character profile for whatever reason I want to, though my reasons often have logic behind them, I am really not picky so do not freak out from the length. Oh and I do the three strikes and you are out. Some things can be worth two strikes and some can you can be banned right away.

XXX► Lιʈєɾα¢y
This is a semi-literate to literate RP. This seems needless to say, but no *asterisks* or -dashes- for actions, and no emotes for emotions. I want you to write your posts up like you're writing a novel. So speech will go in "quotation marks", thoughts will be italicized and any OoC will go in double brackets { }, [ ], or (( )). Your choice. I understand a few mistakes but make sure we know what you are saying and do not use this as an excuse to mess up. I'd like to have at least one paragraph, seven sentences, in your posts, but having more would be awesome.

XXX► Pσsʈιηg & Dєdι¢αʈιση
This is a long term RP, and I'd like it to stay alive for a good long time. So if you play on joining, then please make sure that you can post at least three or four times a week, and I would love it if you could post more than that. So if you don't think that you can meet the posting standards, or will become too busy to stay active in the future, then please don't join. Use of pretty posts is love. Put some time into making your posts look good! At a bare minimum, you have to have colored text (don't use something like yellow or cyan, however. I don't appreciate having my eyes burning out). Keep posting fonts (for the main text) within sizes 9-11.

XXX► Ȼђαɾαcʈєɾ Pɾσfiℓєs
Use the form to make your character profile, and please don't change it. I worked hard on it. I would like well rounded characters, no mary sues, or gary stus, please. Everyone has a weakness, and everyone has their strengths. I want to learn about your characters, and to have their true selves revealed bit by bit. But you can still make them good. Just not every minute characteristic of them. There has to be room to grow. When you finish up your profiles, PM them to me, titled "The Spell of Winter" URL pictures only please.

XXX► Fιηαℓℓy
Last rule, I promise. I congratulate you for reading up to this point, too. If you have, I don't have a different title for you PMs. Just call them what I said before. So the last rule is; you must have fun here! It's an RP, and it should be used to be entertaining! So have fun with it everyone! Also, I might change the rules later on, so be aware.

Accepted Profiles

Gaia Name: The Diamond God
Character Name: Lucétte Adona Cohen
Sex: Female
Age: 13
Persona: Light-hearted, and fun; has yet to allow the world to pop her bubble of happiness.
Biography: Lucétte is the second surviving child of a wealthy, land-owning nobleman Lord Nickolaas Cohen, her father. Her mother had perished in childbirth shorting after their fifth child; the child had died shortly after Lucétte's mother. Or so she was told; she was too little to remember any of it at the time. After his wife's death, Lord Nickolaas couldn't bear to be around Lucétte, as she apparently looked just like his late wife; he took it upon himself to go travel his lands, inspecting what needed inspecting, looking after what needed looking after. On a good year, he was home for four weeks out of the fifty-two; when he was at home, he avoided the children as much as possible. The children were raised by their governors and tutors, but still, when Lucétte looked back on it, it was a lonely, cold childhood. Was it any wonder then that she drifted towards the only bright spot in her life? Sher and her eldest brother, Nickolaas II, grew close, and spent much of the rest of their time together, be it dodging yet another boring Rhetoric lesson, or off ridding through the icy woods in their leisure time.
Weakness: Lucétte is terribly afraid of being alone, of people not wanting her.

Gaia Name: The Diamond God
Character Name: Nickolaas Bernard Cohen II
Sex: Male
Age: 17
Persona: Always looking for fun, always trying to avoid his responsibilities.
Biography: From when he was a young boy, Nickolaas (commonly only called Nick so as not to confuse him with his father) he was being groomed to become his father's heir...and he spent much of that childhood avoiding anything involving the trappings of power that came with the title of "Lord." When his mother died, well, that just made it all the easier. Because their keep was fairly remote, they did not have many neighbors near by, and thus when his baby sister, Lucétte began to follow him around, he did not immediately push her away, but instead welcomed her.
Weakness: Responsibility; Nick hates it, and avoids it as much as possible.

Gaia Name: songbird1676
Character Name: Annabella Mae Dujore
Sex: Female
Age: 14
Persona: A beautiful blossoming girl of 14, she is sweet and very outgoing. She loves to help out when she can with some chores, and is a bit sensitive to some topics of conversation. She is motivated and knowledgeable and is an avid reader as well. She also loves deeply, but not easily. She can also be shy and timid around new people.
Biography: Annabella was given to the Cohen family as a ward when she was a baby in return for Nikolaas and his family doing them a favor to get them out of trouble with the King and Queen and out of the country. Annabella doesn't remember her parents, but knows she isn't blood siblings with Nikolaas and Lucette. She fell in love with Nikolaas and admires him very much. He always knows how to bring a bright smile to her face, and although Annabella is competeing for his affection with Lucette, she is also very fond of the younger girl as well, and they have been good friends since she was given to the Cohen's
Weakness: Isolation and Rejection. Annabella is terrified of being alone and being rejected by the one she loves.

Lucétte Adona Cohen

Lucétte stood close to the baluster on the balcony, her full skirts brushing against the dirty stone; she did not mind if the skirts got dirty. They were last year's fashion anyway. She never wore them outside of the grounds, no matter how cold of a day it was going to be. They were her thickest, and warmest skirts, and the wind was biting today. Lucétte tried not to shiver in her warm cloak and buried her hands deeper into her fox-fur hand warmer, wishing that she'd thought to bring her hat out as well; her ears were icy to the touch and nearly as red as a ripened apple.

Her aching blue eyes swept once more over the dry, dirt colored plains that surrounded the immediate area around their keep. She wanted to be the first one to spot the return of the hunting party, to shout her alert down to the staff, to be the first one dashing out into the yard as the men swept off of their game-laden horses with trained ease, Nick (nose and cheeks red from the cold) the loudest one among them, laughing and joking with the best of the men, his horse the one most heavily weighed down by steer, wolf, fox, and who knows what else. It was a game she played with the Ward, one of the many. Who ever spotted them first got the other's desert are supper time. Lucétte bit her bottom lip to keep from crying out when she spotted a dust cloud; it was not the men's return.

Annabella Mae Dujore

The 14-year-old ward ran out to meet the hunting party as they arrived, grinning when she saw Nickolaas dismount his horse.

"Nick!"

Her cheeks were flushed from the cold, but she didn't care. For the fourth day in a row, she won the game she played with Lucette, "Who-spots-the-hunting-party-first-gets-the-other's-dessert".

When his arms were free, she flung herself into his arms, hugging him, which was normal, especially as they were growing up, and she, Nick and Lucette were extremely close.

She looked up at him, stepping back, and tilting her head in curiousity.

"How was the hunt?"

Nickolaas Bernard Cohen II

Nickolaas grunted as Annabella practically jumped at him as soon as he slid off his horse, capturing him into a tight hug. After a moment to recover from the shock of it all, he began to hug her back.

“*Privet, Annabella. Kak dela?

He pushed her back to proper distance and first one cheek and then the other, as required of a proper greeting. Or rather, he made the motions of kissing her, as he had yet to remove his scarf or lower his fur-lined cowl. All around him, the men were dismounting, joking, laughing, and yelling for ale. As soon as the last of the party trotted through the gates of the estate, Nickolaas ordered them closed again; it was promised to be another bitterly cold night and they didn’t want strangers trotting in their yard or worse. Nickolaas brushed back his hood and began to unwind the thickly knitted wool revealing a cherry-red nose and cheeks; outside of the high walls of their home, the wind was a bitter thing, often cutting through the thickest of wools or fur.

“It was a good; we killed three tundra lions and a couple of deers. We shall eat well this night!”

There was a ragged cheer. He sent a squire running off to fetch servants to retrieve the kills slung over the backs of the horses, and to have the kitchen ready to clean the meat; they hadn’t spent the time to clean them out in the wild. As an afterthought, he sent another squire to retrieve one of the surgeons to tend to their wounded; tundra lions had vicious claws and had wounded four of the men. Nickolaas tasted the thick ale that had been pressed into his hand, feeling it’s warmth creep into his chest; it felt wonderful. He glanced around, surprised to only see that the ward had come to greet him.

“ Where’s Lucétte? She’s usually you’re shadow.”

“Here, Nick. ‘Ella beat me…again.”

Lucétte was only just now getting into the yard. She hugged him briefly, inhaling his musky, warm smell before pulling back again to smile shyly beside Annabella at Nick.

“Good hunt?”

“Good hunt. Gods above and below, it’s cold out here. Let’s go inside, before I freeze off my ears.”

“I had the servants lay in a fire in your room.”

Nick grinned and reached out, mussing Lucétte’s hair; she made a face back at him and beat a quick retreat out of his immediate range.

“Good girl.”

Annabella Mae Dujore

Annabella smiled,

"Good, I'm glad."

She shivered, just now realizing in all the excitement of greeting the hunting party first, she forgot her fur shawl.

"I-I'm g-gonna go in. I just r-realized I f-forgot my sh-shawl."

Annabella smiled sheepishly.

"I-It would be h-horrible if I c-catch c-cold."

She turned and went inside, and made sure the servants had the fires going and the pots ready for cooking. Her mouth watered as she thought of the feast they were going to have that night, she was more than excited, since it had been a few days since they had eaten fresh meat.

Nickolaas Bernard Cohen II

"Go on in with Ella, Lucétte; I still have things that need to be taken care of out here before I can go inside."

Right then, Nick had the misfortune to be hit on the back of the head by a snow ball, thrown by one of his men-at-arms. He turned laughing, as his sister brushed off the snow that had bounced off of him and onto her. Lucétte shook her head ruefully as Nick bent down to scrap snow off of the ground to form him own projectile.

"Go inside, hurry up; quick, before one of the boys pegs you! I'll try to hold them off!"

More then once, his sister had been drugged into the game in form of a hostage or damsel in distress; this act had been complete with an "escape" on horse back. Lucétte laughed and gathered her skirts, running for the safety of the foyer; luckily for her, Nick managed to hold his own long enough for her to get inside before he was tackled into the snow; this quickly devolved into a wrestling match.

Lucétte Adona Cohen

Lucétte was still laughing softly when the doors were closed behind her, shutting out the brightness of the day. She shrugged out of her snow-flecked cloak, and left it on a peg by the doors, along with her boots; she was terrible about returning her articles of clothing to where they belonged. She followed the smell of food, intending to snatch a pastry or lemon cake before the promise of meat that night. She smiled to see Ella commanding the kitchen staff like some kind of general. Lucétte went over and linked arms with the ward, after a kiss of greeting.

"How is it that you keep winning all of the da...all of the time? You must have some kind of trick up your sleeve."

She was working hard to stop cursing, since "true ladies do not speak like that." She sniffed at a tray of tarts, fresh from the oven, but was prevented from flinching even one since one of the head cooks was hovering around them.

Annabella Mae Dujore

Annabella grinned.

"A woman never reveals her secrets. You'll have to figure that one out on your own."

She laughed,

"I intended to give you back your dessert anyways. I don't need two desserts...I want to be able to still fit in my dresses, you know."

The young ward was the type of girl who could eat five desserts and never gain a pound, which many envied her for. She had the slim, curvaceous body of a growing woman, which she had started to obtain when she first went through puberty a year prior. Even her bust was starting to fill out, which gave the maids a new task of making her a modest fitting dress that wouldn't show off too much of her skin.

She sighed,

"Shall we go to the window and see who is winning the snow war outside?"

Lucétte Adona Cohen

Lucétte made a face.

"I'm a woman flowered too, Ella!"

She'd had her menarch about a year and six months after Ella...but her friend wouldn't ever let her live it down that she'd gotten hers first. Lucétte put on her most charming smile, the smile that had gotten her father to give her a new diamond bracelet years before, aiming it towards Annabella.

"Tell me and I'll give you Silverwing, my hawk you love so much?"

She thought she'd found her trump card; Annabella had been after Silverwing since Lucétte had gotten him for her tenth name day from Nickolaas; her father, predictably, hadn't been home. She gave Ella a curios look when she mentioned giving her dessert back; she wasn't about to let Ella go back on her word (they were having lemon cakes tonight, her favorite!) Lucétte unhooked herself from Ella and trotted over to the narrow window (more of an arrow slit, really) and stood on her tippy toes to see outside.

"Who do you think will win?"

Annabella Mae Dujore

Annabella hesitated, as if to think about it. She seemed to be debating with herself on whether to take up her friend's offer or not. After a few minutes, she joined her friend at the window.

"As much as I would like to accept your offer, I cannot. I will not give up my secret so easily."

She grinned at her friend, and then looked back out the window,

"Nick, of course. I'm jealous....I kind of want to go join them...."

Lucétte Adona Cohen

Lucétte pouted, her thin lips pushed out.

"As you will."

She did not doubt that she would be able to hoodwink Annabella's secret out of her sooner or later. People did not refuse the lord's daughter, not even the ward...but Lucétte didn't want to order Ella to divulge her secrets; there was no fun in that. She turned back to the window in time to see Nickolaas flip the boy who was holding him down into the snow over his shoulder and their positions were suddenly reversed, with her brother on top and the poor squire below.

"To wrestle in the snow? Next you'll be telling me that you want to marry a bear!"

She giggled to herself, as she imagined Ella marrying a bear. It reminded her of a song they'd heard half a year ago when a singer passed through last, called "The Bear and the Maiden Fair." Lucétte sucked in a breath and began to sing it lustily; she used sheer volume to compensate for the lack of a proper tune.

"'A bear there was, a bear, a bear! All black and brown, and covered with hair! The bear! The bear!'"

All in all, it was a silly, bawdy little song, but the singer had the most wonderful voice. Nickolaas said it was like honey poured over thunder and had rewarded the singer handsomely; Lucétte had cried when he finally left again.

"'Oh, come, they said, oh come to the fair! The fair? Said he, but I'm a bear! All black, and brown, and covered with hair!'"
