The Bible says in Matthew 7:16 You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?

I'd say its a person who loves God and believes that jesus died for them for their sins. I didn't think that being baptised makes u a christian, but it is an important command Jesus said all christians should do.

If baptism is not absolutely required, why does it say "baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you."

Let's not forget this either.

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."
Acts 2:37-39 (NKJV)

Baptism is not what makes you a christian it should follow after you get saved it is what is commanded once you receive salvation and as a christian you should want to get baptized. Also you should remember the verse Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. so it is saying we are saved by grace through faith so his grace alone and what he did for us..it doesn't say by grace through faith AND baptism.
