Padding through the ushujaa's territory, Kucha mused to herself on how things had changed. As a bumbling cub, she'd had little in her head save for play, and listening to the mzazi's stories. Growing older, she had shown an aptitude for warrior's work, and so she'd begun training to be an ushujaa. Hmm...maybe things hadn't changed so much after all. Where she laid her head to rest now was different, she might be a full-fledged ushujaa, but she was still training.

The lion's tail flicked, twitching like a blue flame, his nose raised to scent the air. To a stranger it may have looked he was hunting something or patrolling for intruders with such a serious furrow on his maw. But anyone who knew him, well they may have known better.
It wasn't that he was a slacker or that he didn't take his job seriously, it was just, well he had quite the playful streak (though perhaps the big fuzzy caterpillar he was currently stalking wouldn't think it was so playful!).
He had spotted his prey, sunning itself on a sizeable root. His head lowered, stalking, one paw forward, slowly, slowly. Oh yeah, that furry beast was his!

The first thing Kucha noticed was a flicker of movement. Pausing, the flicker resolved itself in her view to take the form of a tail...one attached to a lion, of course. He seemed to be intent on stalking something, but when the pale lioness followed his gaze, she saw nothing but a caterpillar. That couldn't be what he was after...right?
After a few more moments of watching, she finally broke the silence. "What are you doing?"

It was almost his--WHA?!
Aedan nearly jumped out of his fur, his attention having been far too focused on the caterpillar to notice the lioness nearby. Good god, what was she trying to do, give him a heart attack?
I mean--ahem! He wasn't scared at all, nope, nu-uh, he was merely acting for her benefit, yeah, that's it.
Clearing his throat, he raised a paw to smooth his mane, doing his best to stand tall and COMPLETELY PLAY THE WHOLE THING OFF. That had so never happened.
The caterpillar however was making no attempts to conceal it's sudden terror, a quick glance revealing that it had fled the scene.
"Aww man, you scared it off."
hmph!

Kucha quirked one eyebrow as she hid her grin, straightening her expression so quickly that one might wonder if they'd even seen the faint curve on her muzzle. She could appreciate the effort, but his lack of control made the pretense less than difficult to notice.
"I'm sure you could find another, if you're bored enough to hunt bugs." She tilted her head, blue eyes measuring him. "You're one of the younger ushujaa, if I remember correctly."

Aedan snorted, who said he was bored? Hmph, as if there weren't hundreds of things he could have been doing at that moment. Hunting the caterpillar was just the one thing of hundreds he'd chosen to do right then, so there!
"Yeah, what's it to you?"
Still grumpy and moody as a teenager. Well it wasn't like he didn't have a reason to be, she'd scared of his caterpillar. Just you wait, if he ever found it again he was going to drop it on her nose!
A smirk, that wasn't a bad idea, now if only he could find where it had run off to...

"A question that you have now answered," Kucha answered slowly and patiently, as though explaining the obvious to a rather dense child. "I prefer to know most of the ushujaa at least by face, if not by name. The alternative might be to challenge another ushujaa in the pass simply because you don't know they're one of us."

"Whatever.."
The word was muttered under his breath, barely loud enough to be heard and perhaps not loud enough to be understood. Though if he thought about it, he supposed what she had said did make sense.
Of course he wasn't thinking about it, he was too busy sulking.
"So who are you then?"

Kucha shook her head slightly and allowed a hint of a wry smile to cross her face. She knew it made sense, and she supposed that once he was over his fit of pique (at losing a caterpillar? how odd) he would too. "Kucha'eupe." She toyed with the idea of mentioning her mother's name and dismissed it. She didn't need to rely on the rank of relatives to forge her path. "What about you, other than a young ushujaa?"

Whether she had mentioned her mother or not would have made no difference to Aedan, except that maybe it would have earned him sticking his tongue out at her. The younger lion wasn't really interested in names or ranks, and no name would have changed the fact that she lost his caterpillar.
Why was he obsessing about that so much anyways? Because it had been HIS caterpillar, that's why! Well okay, maybe that wasn't a good reason...
The lion straightened, his tail flicking.
"Aedan."
Wait, was that--? Ah-hah, his gaze had turned just enough to catch a glimmer of movement. Not the same caterpillar, but it would do. Fortunately the hapless caterpillar had no idea what was coming, barely having time to notice the large paw before it was scooped up and unceremoniously dropped on something warm and fuzzy.
HAH! Caterpillar on your nose, take that!

Despite herself, Kucha frowned. What was he doin--ah. That.
Focusing, her eyes crossed just long enough to see the caterpillar before she looked past it as if it didn't exist, mulling over what to do with it. She wasn't about to go into hysterics for his benefit. She could sweep it off to crush it, but that might allow him to think that it bothered her. It did, a little, but that wasn't the point.
She went with option 3. Flicking her nose, she tossed the hapless caterpillar into the air before catching it in her mouth. Squish!
Mmm, protein.

"Ewwwww..."
Aeden made a face, his tongue sticking out of his mouth to emphasis the point. That, was not what he had expected. He wasn't sure he'd expected her to freak out, but he certainly hadn't expected her to EAT it. EWWW! He could not believe she had actually EATEN IT!
"Would you like me to dig up some worms for your desert?"
There was sarcasm in his voice. He was neither expecting her to answer nor was he planning on actually digging anything up for her benefit.
"Or maybe you'd prefer that furry thing about to chomp your butt."
Furry thing being her tail, but he wasn't going to tell her that.

"No thanks, that was plenty," Kucha replied with seemingly unflappable calm. Okay, so there was a touch of smug amusement there, too. Hadn't taken that into account, had he?
"Oh?" Furry thing, hmm? Glancing over her shoulder, Kucha's brow furrowed as she saw nothing of concern, much less anything threatening. "You'll have to be more specific, since it seems you're the only one who sees it."

"You'll find out soon enough when it sinks it's fangs into your rear."
Hmph, like he was going to tell her what he really meant. Not that she seemed to have fallen for it, but at least she would have to stop for a moment at that nagging little thought that maybe there really was something about to bite her butt, maybe a friend of that caterpillar come to avenge its death.
Acting as if he were completely uninterested, or at least bored, Aedan stuck out his tongue at her then moved to walk past, he had better things to do and prey to hunt. Or so it was meant to seem....
Having nearly passed her, a paw reached out, catching her tail, yank! FLEE!
Aedan took off as if his life depended on it! OH s**t RUN! She was going to kill him, BUT SHE'D HAVE TO CATCH HIM FIRST!

Kucha snorted, unimpressed. She wasn't a cub anymore, to be jumping at tales of beasts in the shadows. If he wanted to frighten her, he'd have to do better than tha--HEY!
A startled growl burst forth, a sign of her fractured composure. A more deliberate growl followed, as the pale lioness flattened her ears and gave chase.
