OK, so I heard about this project from a blog post about a man who is fascinated with religion and plans to immerse himself in a different religion every month for a year.

Here his schedule:

* January: Hinduism
* February: Baha'i
* March: Zoroastrianism
* April: Judaism
* May: Buddhism
* June: Fringe
* July: Mormonism
* August: Islam
* September: Sikhism
* October: Wicca
* November: Jainism
* December: Catholicism

And here's his blog, Twitter and Facebook. What do you all think? While I can see how it might be insulting to some, I think the idea of it is really interesting, since a lot of people seldom want to learn about religion (especially religions different than their own, if they have one), and I think he'll come out of it more knowledgeable in the end.
But I guess part of that could be because I love to learn about all kinds of different religions too. XD

Hm, *nods* Abril is a good month to immerse one's self in Judaism, what with Pesah (Passover) and all. But one can't really learn much of it from just one month's immersion in the culture. There's just to much! And I think the same would hold true for most other religions.

I don't think it's actually possible. You can't immerse yourself in some of these religions for a month, because the only way to understand them really is to be a part of them. Wicca is the big one of course, but I think maybe Catholicism too because of the different sacraments and what being part of the church, and taking communion and so on, actually mean. How can he take communion without being a part of the Catholic church? How can he immerse himself in Catholicism without taking communion?

I think it's ridiculous, and a bit childish really. You can learn about religions without making it into a gimmick. I reckon he just wants to get published or something.

I agree with what's been said, mostly. A good idea, with some kinks to work out. But I'm willing to believe his motives are pure and he really does want to know more, he might just not realize yet how much is involved in actually becoming seriously involved and immersed in a religion. If he learns even that much through his project and modifies his goals or methods with that in mind, I think it's a good thing and could be counted as a success. If he gives each a month-long try and doesn't really learn anything or consider what he could have done better, then it might be just a waste.

I heard about this the other day in the M&R and I thought it was a really nifty idea. I mean, I know there's no real way to totally immerse yourself in a religion in just one month, but I do enjoy the sentiment.

So long as he's not making a flat-out mockery of the religions I don't really see how it would be insulting. And in his blog posts he does seem pretty sincere. I'm going to stick his blog on my Bookmarks and keep tabs on his journey 3nodding .
