I need to get my manetric hp grass... but i dont understand IVs...is there anyway i can make this easier on myself?
PostPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:20 am

Well, for one, if you're looking to change your Manetric's HP to Grass, this is impossible. HP type is determined at pokémon conception! ;P

My recommendation is just breeding until you get an Electrike that has HP (Grass). In HG/SS there is a man at the Celadon Game Corner (where you get the prizes) who will tell you what type a pokémon's HP is; in Pt the guy is at the Veilstone Game Corner.

♥ | HP confuses me more than IV.
IV is just, "Hey, look, your pokémon has a hidden value of 0-31 attached to each of its stats. If the value on a stat is 31, the pokémon will have 31 above its species' base at Lvl 100. If the value is 10, the pokémon have 10 above its species' base at Lvl 100. If the value is 15, 15 above the species' base. If 20, 20 above..." It has an obvious pattern.

HP, on the other hand, is a formula. It is "the quantity of a pokémon's HP IV's least significant bit (lsb) plus its Atk IV's lsb times 2 plus its Def IV's times 4 plus its Speed IV's lsb times 8 plus its Sp. Atk IV's lsb times 16 plus its Sp. Def IV's lsb times 32 multiplied by 15 and divided by 63." The formula is written like this:

a + 2b + 4c + 8d + 16e + 32f x 15
......................63

Where a-f equal the things I mentioned when I wrote out the formula.

For instance, I have an Aerodactyl with the following IVs:

HP: 31
Atk: 27
Def: 16
Sp. Atk: 16
Sp. Def: 13
Speed: 20

If an IV is even, its least significant bit is 0; if it is odd, its lsb is 1. Thus, the formula will be:

1 + 2(1) + 4(0) + 8(0) + 16(0) + 32(1)
= 35
35 x 15 = 525
525 / 63 = 8.333

The final number should be somewhere between 0 and 15. You always round the number down. Then you can use this chart to determine what type HP will be:

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Therefore my Aerodactyl's HP type is Fire.

Since its math, it's something you have to do more than once before you really understand it. Thus, most people will agree that it's confusing. Plus, you must have your pokémon's IVs calculated BEFORE you can use the formula to determine HP type / power. A total hassle. It's just easier to breed or catch pokémon until you get one that has the HP type you want.

Oh, and then there is an extra formula for figuring out the base power of HP...lol.

Is there anyone that this helps or is it just confusing? >c< | ♥

i wish i could say this wasnt confusing lol..im horrible with math

♥ | lol;; That's okay. It took me a while to get it, too. (I'm only decent at math.)

If you really want to understand how to calculate HP type/power, your first step is to understand IVs and EVs. Without that, you can pretty much hang up calculating anything regarding HP. | ♥

I wouldn't use Hidden Power, even if I was paid $100 per battle. rofl

Tbh, I'd just use Low Attack/High Damage Moves.
Hence the ability "Technician". ;D

♥ | Ah. Well, what about IVs do you not understand (besides "everything")? Since you understand EVs, you're off to a good start.

Is it how to calculate IVs? If so, I simply use this calculator. I really have no idea how to calculate IVs except at Lvl 100...it's probably really complicated. lol | ♥

lol ur just weird whee
Not every pokémon has the ability Technician.
HP can get a boost from Technician, too, though...HP does have a power that ranges from 30-70. o:

Yeah, true.

But keep in mind, HP is only for Special Sweepers.
It's not for Attack Sweepers.

Well, Technician doesn't differentiate between physical and special moves.
Though I think all of the pokémon that have that ability are more Atk sweepers...(except the ones who can have it in Dream World).

I may have calculated HP for my Aerodactyl, but I would NEVER have her use HP. sweatdrop

♥ | I think that is well said. By the time I get done EV training, most of my pokémon are Lvl 40+. Just train to Lvl 50, and it should be simple for any calculator to calculate IVs. (I just calculated my IVs for my Typhlosion [Lvl 50]; I ended up only needing two rows of stats [Lvl 50 and 51] and his HP type before it gave me his every IV. I just used a Rare Candy and reset.) | ♥

Oh no, I was referring HP as a Special Attack, and not a Physical Attack. sweatdrop

And yeah, Aerodactyl will never be a Special Sweeper. gonk
