Pet Name: Uindo

Meaning/Origin: Wind in Japanese

Gender: Female

Personality: Uindo is an ebullient girl. She loves to fly and have fun. Whenever she meets someone new, she counts them as a friend. Unless she is brutally harmed or attacked, Uindo will always trust others and will, more often than not, give others second chances.
Some consider her naive, but Uindo ignores this statement. She believes in the good of all.

Prompt: Air Pet - 1st Prompt

Response:

Blinking open her eyes, young Uindo blinked through the blurriness that comes with just waking up. A yawn escaped from the small blue female, a small chirp bursting from her mouth as the yawn ended. Getting to her paws, Uindo looked around for her parents. After a bit of just watching and listening, the small winged fox wandered into the trees. Sometimes her parents went off to find new places to show her, so Uindo wasn’t concerned in the least about where they might be. Plus whenever she went off on her own, they always managed to find her.

As she made her way through the maze of trees, a small figure happened to flit by. It was a butterfly, its wings glistening in the patches of light it darted through. Crouching down, Uindo slunk after the flying insect. The red orbs of her eyes, following the zigs and zags of her target.

“Nnnn….” She growled softly. The butterfly had taken a perch in a cluster of flowers, its wings gently opening and closing as it searched for nectar. “Almost….Gotcha!” Uindo shouted with triumph as she pounced towards the smaller critter. However, when she moved her paws to peek at her captured quarry, the only thing that lay below them was the soft petals and grass where the butterfly had once been.

Tiring of her game quickly, Uindo continued on her trek through the sanctuary. Although she didn’t know the area that well, the small fox knew that it was safe and that her parents were bound to find her soon. With a bounce still in her step, the young female continued in her wanderings….
Days went by. No matter how much Uindo called out or how hard she searched, the female couldn’t find her parents everywhere. Even when she’d gotten lost, the Air female still managed to find the place her parents had last left her. However, no new scent marked that they had returned…

Despite having not seen her parents in over a week, Uindo remained her ever-optimistic self. They hadn’t purposefully left her nor had anything happened to them. Something important had come up and they wanted to keep Uindo in the sanctuary – knowing it was safe and that she enjoyed it there. They’d taught her to survive anyway, teaching her of berries, ‘shrooms, and roots that were safe and those that weren’t – from the time she could see and walk. It wasn’t as if she couldn’t take care of herself.

So, no matter how long it took them, she’d make sure to be waiting for them.

To be continued….

Pet Name: Mer
Meaning/Origin: The Sea
Gender: Male

Personality:
As a youngling, he's bouncy and full of energy. Always getting into trouble and learning from his mistakes. Through life he will slowly become wiser and less impulsive, growing into a fine adult with an elder's attitude.

Prompt: Water Pet - 2nd prompt

Response:

Mer bounded into the surf, his tail quickly propelling him through the water. He swam out as far as he could and didn't yet stop. He gazed at the never-ending ocean before him and wondered just how much further it went. He quickly glanced behind him, the shore merely a line on the horizon. He should have been worried but the young water fox was determined to test out his curiousity.

So further he swam, occasionally diving under the water just to pick up an extra burst of speed. Finally the boy's limbs had grown tired and he stopped swimming but still kept himself afloat. His yellow eyes scanned the never-ending expanse to realize that he had completely lost sight of the sanctuary's sandy beach, back where his parents were.

"Uh oh," he said to himself. Mer was in trouble and he had no clue what to do. "Lost little one?" A calm voice floated over the slow rolling of the waves.

Mer spun around to come face to face with an elder water fox. She gazed down at him with a look between concern and admonishment. He instinctively cringed, feeling guilty that he had done this to himself. The kit kept his eyes down as he spoke, "Yes... I swam out too far."

"Mhmm." The Elder nodded to herself. She didn't say anything else so the kit continued. "I just wanted to see how far I could go but now I don't think I can find my way back." And before dark, he mentally added.

She stayed silent a few moments longer, and when Mer didn't add anything else she finally spoke to him. "To test oneself against himself can be the truest of tests, but setting limits beforehand can save you more in the end."

Mer cocked his head, clearly puzzled by her cryptic message. "It means you should always keep your safety in mind." She shook her head slightly, amused by the young boy.

"I will bring you back to land. But next time you decide to test yourself, remember to keep yourself in mind..." She gently pulled the kit towards her and hoisted him up onto her back. "Hold on," and those were the last words she said to him.

Mer had barely grasped onto his rescuer by the time she jetted off back in the Sanctuary's direction. She was so swift that they reached the sandy beach well before sunset. The elder dropped him off in the surf, gave him a nod and dove under the water out of sight. He stood staring out into the ocean, dwelling on the elder's bit of wisdom. In that moment, he wasn't a child thinking of silly thoughts but of an adult that thinks ahead to the future. Those words would follow him through life...
