The words had finally stopped coming, filling up about five pages already. Satisfied for the moment, Harisson put down his pen and leaned back in his chair. What now, he mused? Glancing about the room, he suddenly had the feeling that he was being watched.
Don't be silly! He chuckled. Even as he thought it, though, the hair at the nape of his neck prickled, sweat began to dot his brow. Grabbing his pen and manipulating it like a weapon, he rose out of his chair and whirled around. Nothing...
With a nervous laugh, Harrison sat back down, rubbing his face. Lowering his hands, a small yip filled his ears. He ignored it, another nervous laugh passing his lips.
"I've been writin' for too long," he told himself, flicking his gaze at the alarm clock that sported 2:57 A.M. "I'd, better get to bed..."
Standing, Harrison pulled back the sheets of his bed and screamed.

Now caught up in the vivid world of his own REM sleep, Harrison began to dream about the few pages he'd written before drifting off. Slowly, but surely, the images became more real than any normal dream and he was walking through a forest in the story. "Wow...this is quite vivd for just a dream," he said to himself. He passed by a few trees and a thorny branch scratched his cheek, drawing blood. He heard a slow, grumbling noise and turned to see a full-grown white tiger perched in a tree, staring down at him. Paling in fright, Harrison tried to run as fast as he could, but to no avail. In three short bounds, the tiger pounced and...
Harrison awoke with a start, sweating heavily and almost hyperventilating. He felt a stinging sensation on his face, felt his cheek, and his fingers came away with some blood on them. "No...way..." he said, then looked at the clock. It was already well past 9 AM. "Time to get up..."
Harrison began his morning routine of washing and eating breakfast before he returned to the journal...

He reached down for it slowly at first, as if the thing might just grow fangs and leap off the desk. Scolding himself angrily for being so childish, he quickly swept up the journal. There, he thought to himself, see? Nothin' to worry about. Harrison glanced at his watch; 9:45?!
"Oh, man! I'm goin' to be late again!" Frantically he searched for his pen. He looked about the desk and it was not to be found. A small giggle filled the air. Turning, he found nothing. Again with the illusions? What was I doing last night?! Trying to pin the blame of his insanity on drugs didn't work, the only drugs he'd ever taken were Tylenol and Niquil. With a heavy sigh, Harrison shrugged his backpack on, opened the door to his room, and peered down at the strangest sight, all worry of tardiness gone.

Standing in front of Harrison was a small man, roughly two feet tall. His body was an ellipse, placed on its side, with two tiny black leather shoes connected to the bottom. A small semicircle of a head rose from the body, lacking an semblance of a neck. This protruding nub of a head was topped with shaggy grey waves of hair which cascades down in all directions. Clothed in tight briches of brown and a tunic of green, the jovial ball bounced in place, jiggling slightly. The tiny gargantua opened its mouth, speaking an alto voice. "A pleasure to see you, dearest master. What can your humble servant, Lorin the Earth Gnome, do for you?"
Harrison stood there, his mouth hanging open. Something was wrong. He began to question if he was truly ok or if the cogs of his mind were starting to slip. After what seemed an endless period of static, Harrison finally decided it would be best to move on. He promptly closed the door.

Door closed, Harrison rubbed his face with his slightly shaking hands. On the other side of the door he could hear the gnome humming, just waiting for him to emerge from his room. Just to be sure, Harrison cracked open the door so just part of the little Earth gnome could be seen. Quickly he slammed the door. Trying to think, he turned to pace, and was stopped by yet another illusion.
Holding his pen was a creature even smaller than the gnome. Coming no higher than his knee was a little girl of midnight skin, hair the color of freshly spilled blood, and eyes of emerald. That didn't make him nervous, it was the rest of her that did. Extending from her shoulderblades were wings that should have been on a raven, two small cat's ears, and a long cat's tail, all the same tone as her skin. Flashing a smile, the little... girl... held up Harrison's pen.
"Hiya!" she said with a voice that rang like chimes. Backing up slowly, Harrison grasped for the doorknob. They're all over the place!

Harrison quickly closed his eyes...This is only a dream, he told himself. If I pinch myself, surely I'll wake up.
Harrison braced himself and pinched his arm hard. He let out a cry of pain, then opened his watery eyes. All of those beastly things were gone. Breathing a sigh of relief, he went out of his house and headed off to eat lunch with his editor to talk about his latest work, which happened to be doing rather well...

At the coffee shop, Harrison's editor looked over his latest work, sipping a tall latte. Harrison, impatient to hear his response, pulled out his orange journal and began to scribble down some things. After about a half hour, the young writer placed his lucky pen down. Bored, Harrison glanced out the window of the shop and blanched.
There, on the other side of the window, were both the Earth gnome Lorin and the strange little girl. They seemed to be in conversation, and by the looks on their faces, Harrison's guess was that they were arguing.
"Harrison? Harrison!" the editor called.
"What?" he asked, breaking his gaze from the two illusions.
"Look, you feelin' ok? You're all...pale..."
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine!" Looking over at the window, the two creatures were gone. "Just... Fine..."

Harrison felt some movement in his pocket and reached his hand inside. He looked down after extracting it and broke out in a cold sweat. A beautiful girl, no larger than the length of his hand was delicately kissing his fingers and saying, "I love you, Master."
Harrison looked swiftly up at his editor. "Sir, I'm not feeling well right now, perhaps we could meet again some other time. Just give me a ring when you can..."
Harrison stumbled out of the coffeeshop, his vision swimming before him. The girl was still moveing around in his pocket; he could feel her...

This is completely insane!
All the way home, Harrison had constantly checked his pockets and glanced over his shoulder. His hands were quaking by the time he'd gotten home. Now, as he peeked out of the window, he tried to rationalize.
"I'm over here, Master!"
Oh God... Please...
As slowly as he could, Harrison looked behind him. There, sitting on the table, was the same little "girl", and, oh no, under the table was a large spider with a human's head.
Letting out a scream, he dashed for the bathroom and locked the door.
"Master...? Where'd yeh go?!"
"GO AWAY! I'M NOT CRAZY, SO GO HAUNT SOMEONE ELSE!"

Harrison slumped down agaisnt the bathroom door. A million thoughts running through his head.
"What the hell is going on? M. Mabye I'm dreaming and just don't want to wake up. Yes that's it, it is all a dream nothing more.."
He trailed off as something pounded on the door.
"Master," Came the chorous of voices. "Master give us your bidding" The voices spoke as if they were in the room as well.
Harrison stood and tentivaly opened the door. He let out a strangled cry and ran through the house and to his bedroom where he quickly shut and locked the door. Panting heavily he glanced up at the window only to see...

A waterfall started from the top of the neighboring building and cascaded down into the street. Part of Harrison felt relieved - at least it wasn't another creature.
Still...
"Where is everybody?" He asked himself, making a mental note that only crazy people do so. There were no people, no cars, no nothing except the usual plastic sack being blown helplessly by the wind.
"Figures," Harrison said bitterly. He sank down to his bed, gave his arms a good pinch, and wriggled down into the sheets.
Naps always did him good when he had writer's block, but unfortunately, this wasn't writer's block. All the same, Harrison figured a nap would do him some good for his mental well being.

When he awoke, the creatures were all gone. He looked outside; there was no waterfall. He squeezed his eyes shut again and tried once more: nothing. He smiled, getting up, breathing in.

"Where do you think you're going?" said a voice behind him.

He turned slowly. The gnome, the cat girl, and the tiny woman were sitting on his bed, looking at him expectantly. The tiny woman was pouting.

"I'm..." Harrisson stumbled over his words. "I'm going to the washroom and you're not real, alright?"

"I'll come!" yelled the tiny woman, standing up. "Please bring me! I would love to help you in any way..."

"Be quiet, Pepper!" the gnome yelled. "The Master needs his time alone. He still doesn't believe in us."

He half-stumbled, half-ran to the washroom and locked himself in. Switching on the lights, he quickly scanned his surroundings so as to encertain that there were no otherworldly surprises awaiting him here. Satisfied that he was alone, he sat down on the toilet, and buried his head in his hands.

This is not happening.

Even as he kept repeating the words to himself, he heard the voices outside the door.

Pepper: How can he not believe in us? He sees us, doesn't he not? He hears our voices...
Gnome: Patience, woman...the Initiation takes time.
Catgirl: He'll come around. Deep in his heart of hearts, he knows we're real...he just has to accept it now.

I have to get out of here

Harrison looked wildly around him. There was a small window between the shower stall and the toilet. It would be a small squeeze, but he felt he could make it. He walked to it, looked out...and his blood turned to ice again...
