Something I have often mused on during my travels in bookstores is that there is a lot more published "fanfiction" than I first would have thought.
I grew up with my parents and brother reading the Star Wars and Star Trek novels so it isn't as if the idea is new to me, but in the past few years I have found so much more.
Books of Anthologies for writers taking their turn with the realm and characters of favorite authors and story genres, like Sherlocke Holmes, and King Arthur.
I have even discovered books based on Homer's epic poems.
TROY by Adele Geras is one of them, and I can't wait to read it.
Same with books using Shakespeare's plays, the book Ophelia by Lisa Klein gives a very sweet perspective of the character.
My mother and I also recently found a new love of Jane Austen and have furthered expanded upon this with reading "sequel" novels authors have written.

Now publishers may not use the term fanfiction, but in all manners, that is exactly what it is.

Since many of us have talked of wanting to publish our own works it is something to take note of that there is some future in the publication world with fanfiction as well as original works.

I enjoy reading them myself too. ^_^

There is something fun about reading others "what if" thoughts or "how would the story continue" and it doesn't matter to me if it "officially" published or in a book.

I probably could write some some myself, though I guess my journals of my rp characters might count, but I enjoy reading them so much more.

I, of course, would love it if I could formally publish Harry Potter fanfiction. My career would be made. biggrin Plus I could still play with the characters and world I love so much. Triple bonus!

However, I do find it interesting the requirements one has to comply with in order to publish formal fanfiction. I mean, those requirements are how they filter out "bad" fanfiction, correct?

Are any of those requirements similar across fandoms?
