Sometime in the beginning of last month, I really messed up my knee doing a flying side kick. I landed oddly, my leg bent in a very unnatural way, and ever since then, there's been a slight ongoing pain in my knee.

Tonight, while we were doing kicks, I had to stand on the leg that had the hurt knee. While I was kicking, I felt the most unusual thing: it felt as though the part of my femur connected to the knee was sliding around in rapid circles. Of course, once I felt this, I stopped kicking.

People say that "It'll heal," but I'm starting to have my doubts. Is this going to be a serious problem in the future?

Thanks in advance.

First of I need to know whether have you seen your doctor ... if not ... go see your doctor ...

It will heal in time ... but it may not be the same ... depending on the severity of it ... you have to treat it like the worst case scenario: possible ACL damage ... think of it this way ... get it checked or risk not being able to walk ...

All I ask is go to your doctor ...

I haven't seen a doctor yet (as much as I asked). If I can, I'm going to ask about it, since the thought of not being able to walk/run anymore frightens me.

Visit the doctor. An injury like that could stick around for a long time. In the interim you should keep the knee braced (athletic tape or a knee brace will do) to keep the condition from exacerbating, and be prepared for the likelihood of some physical therapy to strengthen the ligaments and musculature of the knee.

Case in point, if it was needed. My friend and I were training his Muay Thai. I graciously accepted to act as a target for him (there wasn't to be any impact, he was training striking precision) trusting that he could perform maneuvers I'd seen him do a million times before.

To shorten the story, one of his kicks got a little wild when his footing slipped and impacted the interior of my knee. Not a big deal, I've been kicked there quite a few times. However, his big toe caught be just beneath the side of my kneecap, hitting the ligament there. That hurt, and I limped for a week or so before things seemed to get back to normal. It would still hurt every now and then, but never enough to warrant a doctor's visit.

Fast forward to now, three years later. The pain is gone, but other problems persist. That knee is much weaker than the other, and it creaks badly when I climb stairs. Sometimes, it goes numb on me. The doctor said that if I had gotten to him when it happened, they could have helped. Unfortunately, since I didn't the would didn't heal right and without highly invasive surgery that could cripple me for years I can't fix it now.

So (and this goes for all injuries, not just yours Okami!) if you suffer a joint injury of any sort, even one that doesn't seem like a big deal at the time, cough up the $75 bucks to go get it looked at and x-rayed. Better to catch it at the time than three years later when it can't be reasonably fixed.

Bypass the doctor and see a physiotherapist if you already have connections.
