We're going to be delving into some more complicated grammar in the next few weeks, but I figured I should give you a break first and spend some time building up your vocabulary. This lesson will consist of new nouns, verbs and adjectives for you to memorize... enjoy!
NOUNS
mado - window
hondana - bookshelf
tsukue - desk
tansu - drawers/chest
e - picture
isu - chair
todana - cabinet
denwa - telephone
heya - room
otearai - bathroom
shukudai - homework
yasai - vegetable
All of the following words are written in katakana:
sutando - lamp
terebi - television
beddo - bed
doa - door
teeburu - table
biiru - beer
VERBS:
Group 1 Verbs/ U-Verbs:
asobimasu - to play (This word doesn't just apply to children. Adults also "play")
oyogimasu - to swin
utaimasu - to sing
tsutsumimasu - to wrap
mochimasu - to hold
yobimasu - to call, to invite
Group 2 Verbs/ Ru-Verbs:
misemasu - to show
motteimasu - to own, to have
iremasu - to put in
tsutomemasu - to become employed (NOT "to hire")
ADJECTIVES:
i-adjectives:
atarashii - new
akarui - bright (not as in, "intelligent")
semai - cramped, narrow
furui - old
hiroi - spacious, wide
kitanai - dirty, messy
kurai - dark (not as in "morbid")
na-adjectives:
shizuka - quiet
rippa - splendid, gorgeous
yuumei - famous
shinsetsu - kind
jyouzu - skillful
These lists of adjectives should greatly expand your current Japanese vocabulary. For those of you who are serious learners, I would recommend writing these out on flashcards in hiragana, to improve your reading skills.
