So I saw this on AOL news, but I'm not sure what it is. The bill that Obama is going to veto suggest the government "stay open" for another week cutting $12 million in spending and funding the military through the remainder of the fiscal year. This was a Republican bill.
What exactly is a government shut down? What would this entail?
This is the latest article on it.
This one is the original that I read. There are a ton more on AOL news and I'm sure elsewhere.

I know they're trying to shut down all the home retention programs associated with the Making Homes Affordable, but that has to do more so with mortgages and foreclosures and probably not at all what you're talking about.
Do you have a link?

It means a lot of civilian employees of the government won't show up to work and I'll only get paid for the first eight days of the month until they get their heads out of their rears. Unfortunately, I still have to show up to work.

@ Lateralus: I'll have to post one tomorrow since I'm on my phone right now. But it was on AOL.com right on the front page.
@ VK: So it's pretty much what they're doing to the military. Had Congress not signed that bill to freeze their pay we would not have gotten paid this month, but my husband would have been serverly punished had he not gone to work.

Had Congress not signed that bill to freeze their pay we would not have gotten paid this month, but my husband would have been serverly punished had he not gone to work. Exactly. I'm in right now, and they say that if there is a shutdown, I'll only get paid for the first eight days of the months. However, I still have to work these terrible hours (0500-2200, generally). I still have to report in. If I don't, it's off to prison with me. AWOL and all that crap. However, those politicians who mostly know nothing of being without your family for months on end won't get their heads out their asses. I saw one representative say that she wouldn't give up her check during the shutdown because she "lives paycheck to paycheck, has a two year old son, and has to pay for residencies in both coasts. I just couldn't do it."Well, I can barely support myself and my wife to be off my Airman's pay even when they do hold up their end of the bargain. Civilians. If we don't get paid, we start to worry about our families. a soldier in the desert worrying about his wife being able to eat or having a warm place for his son to sleep at night is a soldier who has a higher chance of dying. Not going to pay the boys in the desert? Shitty. Very shitty.

I must say that I am a little pissed off by the fact that Obama is threatening to veto the continuing resolution bill, that would allow the military men and women to still receive their pay checks while the House and the Senate debate out what to spend and what to cut!

I've been reading up on it more now since my sister-in-law sent me all these links. And I've also seen that they're trying to negotiate. My bank, NevyFed, said they're going to be paying everyone no matter what. I'm curious how they will do this, but the article makes it seem they're really set on not letting active duty have their pay skipped.
Why would a rep. have two residences? One is a summer home or something? And if a rep. doesn't have a good savings account then something is wrong there. My husband is an E-4 in the Marine Corps, the lowest paid of all branches, and we are the ones who live paycheck to paycheck. I doubt her story. But what's with the two residences...
There are a bunch of places to go for financial aide, but this shouldn't be happening... Here's the link to some. I have other links if you're interested.
My husband has been saying that if he diesn't get paid he's not going to work... He's too much of a pushover to do something about it though... And he wonders why I've been urging him to not reinlist. He gets out in May...

I don't know much about that bill, but if it is vetoed it will go back to the start and the military doesn't get paid right?

I don't think they realize how many live paycheck to paycheck and are barely making it. We've been doing alright, except for these past few months... But there are others who have more family to support. I know a Sargeant with 5 kids. Only one is his own so I'm not sure what type of support the mother gets from the other father.

@ Everyone bitching about being unpaid: Like..almost everyone is underpaid. Its a struggling time. Correctional officers, military, police officers, teachers, most nurses ... @ Government shutdown situation: *flails arms and runs around* I've been -living- at work this week, so i've not had time to be on the internet or watch television, I was totally in the dark about all this until I saw this article. This entire situation scares me.

The government is supposed to protect us from things like this. From things that have been happening over the past decade. If the government can't decide on something as important as budget, then what the hell are they going to ******** us over on next. We can b***h and complain and do something, but is the government actually going to listen? I highly doubt it. All we can do, ya know military people, can go to work and hope they get something figured out because if I open my mouth I can get my husband in trouble for what I say. Then we would be without a job and healthcare.

What I don't understand is why didn't the government pass a budget in the first place? They were supposed to do on Oct 1st of last year. Now because it wasn't passed for this fiscal year, we are stuck in this mess on a pending and very likely shutdown.

Now because it wasn't passed for this fiscal year, we are stuck in this mess on a pending and very likely shutdown. I have been wondering about that also. Wouldn't you think the budget would be number one priority? Or have there been so many arguments about it that it has gotten pushed back this far. I doubt that. It seems clear that they are thinking about other things of less importance.
