The Visual Novel Challenge

User ImageVisual novels are not easy to create. You have to write a full story, and if you're not creating a kinetic novel, you need to write multiple branches and endings, so you may as well be writing six novels at once with all the same characters and settings. You also have to worry about artwork, both sprite and background, coding the game so you don't put a stray parenthesis where it doesn't belong and BREAK YOUR ENTIRE GAME, as well as providing a stylish interface, memorable but not overpowering music, and realistic and well-timed sound effects. Let's face it, it would be easier to lead a mule to water AND make it drink than it can be creating a Visual Novel sometimes.

That's where I'm here to help. The following is a guild-wiki of resources you can use to create your visual novel. This should help take some of the pressure off when you have to worry less about hunting for music for your game, and sound effects. Writing, coding, and artwork should be enough of a hassle.

Music

A visual novel is nothing without music. The following is a list of sites where you can download music for use in the background (or in some cases, even the foreground) of your game.

There are two types of music for use in a visual novel: royalty-free and...well, non-royalty-free. If the music is royalty free, it means that you do not have to pay a stipend to the creator/owner of the music, and therefore you can sell your game. If the music is not royalty-free, you may still use the music in your game, but only if you release it for free, or are willing to pay a stipend to the creator.

JP TAM Music Factory - Translator required unless you read Japanese.

Sound Effects

Sound effects are essential to a Visual Novel. The following is a list of sites that offer sound effects. The same rules regarding royalties apply here as they do in the music section.

Having trouble figuring out that code? Never fear, the guild is here! But on the off chance that no one in the guild can answer your question, there are a few resources you can use to find the answer to your coding problems.

Ren'Py

The following resources are for Ren'Py users only. If you're using a different engine, these resources will not help you.
