What art do you prefer in your games? Western style, Eastern style, a mix, cartoonish, etc.? Discuss what you like, and what games you've seen it in.

Because I'm fond of anime/manga, I tend to enjoy the eastern styles, but I don't really mind anything. My favourite VN happens to be japanese and it was written and drawn by one man, and although the artwork isn't very good, it's still immensely popular. [example][example] [example]

A PS3 version came out with updated artwork, I don't have it, but it doesn't feel the same without the humble sprites.

I prefer anime and manga style myself. I dunno, I just can't bring myself to enjoy the western styles. I don't think it's very good at portraying emotions.

I've drawn some myself, although I never did finish this game... that had sooooome visual novel elements put into it (apart from the battles, there's choices you make with the characters that determine your relationships... Kinda like Mana Khemia or Riviera).

(I kinda screwed up getting rid of the background back then because I saved them in JPEG, then realised my mistake and had to erase the background manually cos' I already carefully resized everything.)

Anything good is fine with me, but the majority of VNs are definitely anime/manga style. I can't really think of any Western-style VNs.

I do prefer the more Western look of 999 to the Eastern look of Ever17, though. Muchly. I wish more VNs had art like 999.

This is the style I'm going to go with for my own VN once I manage to figure out the coding enough to start (X_x):

I don't know if that's Western or Eastern or what, but that's an easy to style for me to draw in right now. Maybe more Western. What do you guys think? I'm an awful judge of my own stuff. XP It looks like both to me.

@Liam: lol, the Umineko artwork bothers me so much, but I want to play it SO BAD. XD I need to psych myself up for it. I've watched part of the anime and loved it, and I love VNs, so I HAVE to get over it. XP

@Bapp: As far as portraying emotions goes, I can't really agree with you there. Anime is good for portraying emotions in a very simple way, with symbolic expressions (angry= slanted half-moon eyes with an x-shaped vein and a mouth full of sharp teeth, sad = huge, round, shiny eyes or waterfall tears, happy = rainbow-shaped eyes and u-shaped/half-circle mouth, etc) , and there's nothing wrong with that. Western art is more than capable of getting emotions across, too, though. It's more difficult, but I think the resulting subtlety pays off in the end. It all depends on the artist.

Rae, if you don't feel like spending a couple o' yen on the Umineko series, I'd be happy to provide you with some links, you can always PM me if you're interested, okay? 3nodding

Animated Sprites > Anime style > 3D character models > Western style

Of course if it's somewhat actiony I tend to lean towards Western and 3D models more.

I don't disagree with you there. But I've never actually found a game with Westerny art really appealing.

I do like 999's art style too though. Although technically it is still an anime-ish style.
But the character design for the characters were pretty cool.
I mean Santa's... damn, Santa is COOOOOL.
