A lot of VN's use a typewriter effect, that is, they use some kind of low-key beeping or typing noise each time a character of text is revealed. Listen to a Phoenix Wright game, and you'll know what I mean; the tone of the beeps is determined by the character, as male characters have a lower tone, and female characters have higher ones. How do you feel about this? Is it not usually noticed, or maybe beneficial? Or does it make you want to claw your tympanic membranes out?

I'm fine with this effect, especially on consoles where voicing a full game would be infeasible. Many of the RPGs I played on the SNES had this effect as well; Lufia is the first game I remember having it. It added extra characterization for NPCs who where just little sprites. So I would say I like this effect, although to me it only seems appropriate on a cartridge-based console/handheld title. If a PC developer can't afford to make a fully-voiced game, then there should be no sound for the tex. The typewriter effect would only make the player think about how the game doesn't have voice acting.

I agree, I think it always adds a nice touch and atmosphere to the game.

I like the sound too. Can't really put my finger on why, but I just do.

I usually like that beeping sound. It's a great audio filler if there's a scene that's supposed to be quiet and has no music. Think Harvest Moon at night.
