I was wondering where people got their supplies for their wonderful steampunk contraptions. A search on Ebay usually pulls up expensive little bitty watch parts. Unfun! So where do you all get your gears and such?

Swap meets, garage sales... sometimes some shops will let you have their trash, so asking about repair shops and what not may not be such a bad idea. But thrift stores are really the best places. I know most only carry clothes, but the ones that have crap in boxes are great.
Also, buying crap and then spray painting it to look like... anything brass, bronze, whatever is always a cheap way to get durable accesories since a lot of the expensive stuff you get online may be brittle and easily damaged.

i Take apart a variety of things.. such as old clocks computers T.V's and use a copper basic solution for the transformation from a steel color to a more rustic brass.

also, my stempunk outfit is almost entirely comprised of semi-formal clothing I really just bought from Target and other places. I spiced it up by buying some more expensive steam punk excessories from a science-fiction convention I go to every summer but outside of that I really just bought a nice vest, dress shirt, and pants from Target.
I also created my goggles really cheap out of milk bottles, you can find the instructions on a webstie called instructables, if you do a google search for milk carton goggles instructables it should come up, hope it helps smile

Last time I bought my supplies it was from Etsy.com you can realyl find everything on that website but it ends up being quite expensive due to shipping costs.
