"Now you listen here! He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!"
A young man named Brain born in a manger next door to Jesus Christ is mistaken for the messiah.
This is probably one of the only comedy films set in biblical times, and definitely the funniest.
But many religious people find this movie to be blasphemous and offensive; I feel that they simply don't understand. Kind of like the Judea folk in the film. This film does not attack religion, but rather it makes fun of those who don't understand religion or misinterpret the meaning of it.
For instance, there’s a scene depicting the sermon on the mount where Jesus is speaking to a crowd saying things like "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" or "Blessed are the Peacemakers" but at the very back of the crowd they can't hear what he's saying so instead they hear "Blessed are the cheese makers" and "Blessed are the Greek"
In fact that was the only scene where Jesus is even seen.
What is really sad is when people criticize a movie without even seeing it. Which was a case with many people who mistook Brian as a stand in for Jesus. Goes to show ya what good paying attention does, don't it?
But it's not just the misunderstanding of religion that gets poked at. There's also great scenes involving being stoned for blasphemy, a lesson in Latin conjugation and obsessive haggling.
Even how the townfolk think that simple things are signs from god or miracles, like Brian losing a sandal or pointing out a juniper bush.
And this movie probably has the best version of Pontius Pilate ever. Why? He has a lisp! (His R's sound like W's)
All in all, this isn't quite as funny as Holy Grail, but it is really funny in its own right and very entertaining.
