Tonight on SGU: ‘Gauntlet’

Monday - May 9, 2011
by Darren Sumner

SPOILER ALERT: MODERATE

The Stand. Pursued across the galaxy by drone ships programmed to hunt and destroy technology, Destiny and her crew are out of options. Blocked at every turn, Colonel Young and his people must stop running … and stand up and fight.

After two seasons, 40 episodes, and an ambitious storyline, Stargate Universe comes to its end tonight. It wasn’t the end that the writers intended — SGU will end on a bittersweet cliffhanger, from all reports. There will be no third season, no wrap-up movie or mini-series, no webisodes or other last-minute reprieve. But it’s been one hell of a ride.

“Gauntlet” airs tonight at 9 p.m. (8 Central) on Syfy Channel! Don’t miss this important final installment not just of this series, but of modern-day Stargate as we know it. We believe with great certainty that the franchise will be back down the road. But for now, this is the final hour for Stargate fans to enjoy.

After you’ve watched the last episode, you have three things still to do!

Head over to GateWorld Forum to discuss “Gauntlet” with thousands of other Stargate fans! Tell us what you thought of the episode, the questions it left you with, and how fitting an end you think it was to this terrific season.
Also join us on the forum to celebrate two years of SGU and 14 years of Stargate on television! With the franchise drawing to a (temporary) close, this is the time for fans of all three shows to come together and reflect on what has made Stargate great.
Stick with GateWorld! All this week we’ll be bringing you our full coverage of the final episode, including a complete transcript, episode summary, podcast discussion, high-res screen capture gallery, and more.

Heading into the summer months and an extended period of time with no new episodes, we’re getting ready to launch several new features to help pass the time till Stargate‘s return!

Without further ado, here is your preview of the Stargate Universe series finale:

From TV Guide:

Drones close in on the Destiny in the series finale.

From SPACE:

Blocked by Command Ships at every star and unable to gate for supplies without alerting the drones, Destiny must take a stand or be left adrift.

Hmm. I'm sort of glad they left it open at the end, able to be picked up in the future if that becomes viable. Even if its just a movie.

T'was sad...but also well written, though the exact ending was a little predictable. Glad Eli "stood up" and all though, he's really grown as a character, from what little I've seen so far. Might need to get SGU on DVD. Maybe I'll get into it that way -shrug-

Good final episode.

I have to say that this IMO is the best of the 3 series finales that Stargate has ever had. I loved how the powering down of Destiny's systems sequence really mirrors that of when the ship started to power up at the beginning of Air part 1. This episode had a great balance of action and emotion and didn't give me that feeling of WTF like most series finales do that leave on cliff hangers.

I knew those stasis pods would come back into play somehow and I was right, I don't think I hated one moment of this epsiode at all. I have to admit that I wanted to tear up a little at the end. The use of the shuttle to kick some Drone a** was a very smart move, SGU makes great use of its secondary characters. I couldn't help but think the little dinner scene as an on air rape party. We had all of the main cast there eating and having a good time. The toast that Young gave was great, made me laugh when he called Rush the crazy uncle.

I'm sad that the show only got to go two seasons, just when IMO the show was really into its stride. Sy-fy is now dead to me, Stargate was the only thing keeping me there.

The ending of the epsiode with Destiny powering down was a symbolic representation of the Stargate franchise as a whole powering down into the long journey though hiatus space. 14 years, 17 seasons of television, 3 movies, and many books and comics, Stargate will continue it will drift though the black and one day reawaken when a new show/movie dials the gate up for a connection.

Most wonderfully and eloquently said...But did you all notice that the ending had a striking resemblance to how the Halo Story ends?

Master Chief is on a ship, damaged(well pretty much cut in half), drifting in the middle of "god knows where" space, and is put into a stasis pod for when help arrives(in any form or fashion), to be guarded by Cortana.

I teared up at the end of that series, and I did at the end of Stargate...But something stuck with me. their calculation of how long it would take to travel, was 3 years. I cannot help but see that as some hint, though not expressly shouted, put in by the writers to hint for a possible reemergence in the near future....despite what we heard...I give it 3 years for a revival.

Thanks Tysorian I was feeling very sentimental last night.

At the time I didn't even think about how the end of SGU was in a way like the end of the Halo series (at least the Master Chiefs story), but now that you've mentioned it I can see the similarity now. The crew is Master Chief while Eli takes on the role of Cortana, at least until he gets that final pod fixed.

3 years would hopefully give MGM enough time to get there act together and get some money in the right place's to get the movies going or at least another season of SGU.
