The first step is to determine the genre. Of course, it can fall into multiple genres, but it works best if you select a primary genre, and let the VN fall into other genres as it writes itself, so to speak. Here are some examples:
Gaming Genres: (The style of 'gaming', or the nature of the choices) Puzzle - Phoenix Wright-style. Come up with answers to tough, puzzly-goodness questions. Survival - A single wrong step gets you stabbed by a bloodthirsty monster. It could be a human monster who likes to kill adults and steal milk bottles from babies, or a literal monster who would eat babies. Romance - Raise your stats in a dating sim to pick the perfect guy/girl for you!
Storyline Genres: (These could be different from the gaming genre.) Horror: AAAAAAAAHHHH! Legal: See Phoenix Wright (but preferably more John Grisham so we're not copying...much.) Slice of Life: La la la la la la la, I lost a pound todaaaaayyyy~! Sci-Fi: Can't deny, can't deny, that I am really from Ouuuuter Spaaaace~! Futuristic: Flying cars are always exactly thirty years away from the present. Historical: Hast thou a wooden pole upon which I may gyrate? Combat: Dodge, kick, punch, ouch! Detective: Hm...the footprints lead this way. Forensic Detective: Hm...the footprints have traces of iron in them. Drama: Jerry...for god sakes, man, put the Super Soaker down...he isn't worth it! Medical: Forceps...sponge...screwdriver...opticon skillometer... Superhero: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...no, wait...it is a plane. Never mind. Fanfic: Charizard, use your Pot of Greed to attack Agumon with "A Thousand Years of Pain"! Mystery: Rhy rould a rhost re rovered in frour? Fantasy: De plane, Boss! De...wait...,no, dat's Zuperman...
...and so on. I'm just out of ideas. So let's pick a genre or two first, then work on the story. Remember, what's listed above isn't the absolute end-all of choices.
Something to consider: granted, we might need to ask for permissions, but if we created a Gaia-related game, like involving their NPC's, maybe hold a contest to pick a few Gaia users to star in the game, we could get some serious attention from Gaia itself, showing up on the guild spotlight. We'd have near-endless resources to work with at that point, a much larger member base, and more publicity, but a lot more pressure to perform.
Just a thought.

The ones I'd personally be interested in doing are: Gear-Richie Puzzle SurvivalRomance Storyline Genres: HorrorLegalSlice of Life Sci-Fi HistoricalCombat Detective Forensic Detective DramaMedical Superhero Fanfic MysteryJust a thought. sweatdrop I don't think I'd be interested in doing Fanfiction at all... but I've suggested mystery at the end of mine. What about Fantasy? emo

I can't think of everything...despite how much I try...
But I've added Mystery and Fantasy to the list.

Is there anything keeping us from doing a basic VN, gameplay wise?
You know, you have your choices, routes, etc.? We obviously (Well, maybe) won't have ero-content, but I don't see why we have to do survival or combat or puzzles.

I'm a big fan of horror, so I'll vote for that. As well as fantasy, mystery, sci-fi, and survival for game genre.

Those aren't all the categories. What I was going for was that the choices have to be something. All choices in VNs are either puzzle, slice of life, survival, mystery, or something else similar.

I'd like a combination of anything together with romance.
I think you can shove potential love candidates into almost any genre.
