Down the long darkened highway between Nova Nova and La'To, little stirred. There were few settlements on the highway itself. The only point of civilization worth mentioning was a little town that straddled the border between Heme and A'Klar: Moyen. Little more than a collection of stores and petrol stations, the town was a rest stop for weary travelers. It even boasted an old inn.

The darkened structure welcomed any traveler, day or night. The staff was receptive to any peculiarity, providing discrete service for all types of clients: human or otherwise. And they even rented by the hour.

It was at that inn that Rethen Kel'Sviet currently lounged, occupying a place in the expansive main room, a glass of wine and a plate of dark chocolate pastries his only company. The Alchemist had been wandering, exploring the darkened recesses of Heme. And his newest reagents were already steeping concoctions.

The promises of new adventures and darker things had driven him from his home and his Shadows. Though the latter followed him, traveling alongside and within, he still felt discontented. His exploits in the town he left behind had been fulfilling. The humans and demons a like being dark enough to make his fangs glisten with hunger. But their desires had been...limiting. There was only so much one could do without a thirst to mangle.

Taking up his glass, he swirled the liquid, watching as the fire crackled through the burgundy liquid. Yes. There had been few people who shared his penchant for dissection and experimentation in that tiny little town. His most recent companion had not lasted long at all. Really, humans had no stomach for medically excising things from living flesh. Or the screams of the victims. Or slow poisons.

Hum. Perhaps that was the biggest problem. Oh well. It had been entertaining to watch the man's eyes melt from his face.

Now, all he had to do was wait. It was quite boring really. He did hope someone would alive so that he might enjoy whoever, or whatever, happened to join him. There was still a long way to Nova Nova. And he could use a distraction.

She had to have been. Been crazy, that is. Must have been crazy, to get involved with a demon. Everything was so crazy, everything so off the figurative rocker as to have been falling deep into the deepest pits of crazy. It must have started a long time ago, even before the demon. In fact, she must have been crazy ever since she first walked into that dark room, with the black, thick, and velvety curtains blocking out all of the sun. Must have been crazy ever since, with the curtains muffling her timid voice as they rustled while people moved past them, and she must have been crazy when she said --

He was confused. The demon, rechristened (what an ironic turn of phrase) Azazel, was confused. He did not think that he enjoyed being confused, not that he fully knew what, exactly, it meant to be in a state of "confusion." He simply knew that it was not an enjoyable state of existence and that he would like to do something different, please.

If he could understand the concept of "please."

(There was a lot about the demon that the woman did not understand, and a lot about the woman that the demon did not understand.)

As much as he did not enjoy being confused, Azazel was otherwise rather content at the moment. While not exactly living in an eternal state of glee, the imp was well-fed and kept company. And he was not stuck to a wall anymore. A definite improvement. In fact, he was even leaving the town of La'To, if only for a short while. It must have been some obscure idea of the female to whom he was bound by contract, to "remove the source of her fear." Azazel had noticed that the man-thing named "Basille Filimer" was full to overflowing of obscure ideas.

Perhaps that was contributing to his confusion, as well. Man was a strange thing and he did not think he cared to understand it, not if all of that shrieking and twitching was involved. (Basille Filimer was not the best example of an average human, so while Azazel may have developed a strange concept of what it meant to be a "human," it was not entirely his fault.)

The next thing that was confusing Azazel was that while he understood that he and the strange woman were traveling, he did not quite understand why or where. The woman had mumbled some nonsense in a voice that may have been meant for him, but he had not managed to understand regardless, before beckoning for the imp to follow her out the door and into the world.

They had been walking for a long time. The imp knew enough of the human world to understand that there were other methods of transportation available to them, yet also knew enough about his strange contractor that she did not seem to like other people that much. The reasons escaped him. It probably had something to do with that strange, omnipresent fear of hers.

The mismatched pair (although the imp had resided in the shadows for much of the journey) was about halfway between La'To and the town of Nova Nona, which even if Azazel had known, would have not meant much, and it was at that point that the human woman stopped.

Was this the place? The imp observed the town they had stopped in. Was this the destination of the woman? It seemed rather bleak and unlively to his perceptions. Perhaps this wasn't their destination. Perhaps the woman had only stopped here because she was afraid of the dark.

That would not have surprised Azazel.

She must have been so crazy, ever since she had thought to walk into that dark and uninviting room and plead for help.

Rethen looked up at the sound of the door, his eye flaring green in curiosity. Like a draft, the smell struck him and he smiled, fangs shimmering in the low light. Demons. That very unique air quality that only accompanied one who was bound to darkness in the purest sense: Contractor.

The Alchemist swirled his wine slowly, moving ever so slightly so that his arm glinted in the light before clearing his throat, hoping to attract the attention of the newest person. He had heard rumors that there were new contracts, new people bound to his side of the world.

Perhaps this was one of them.

"Awfully late to be wandering," he purred, the smile ever present.

The woman was so jumpy. It really was rather disturbing, and the demon known as Azazel still could not comprehend exactly what made Basille Filimer into such a nervous person. He could gather that it had something to do with the source of fear, but beyond that, the woman refused to go into detail.

She had seen the glint of a metallic arm, and heard the slight clearing of a throat. As if a conditioned reflex, she attempted to fade into the shadows almost immediately, whispering and muttering incoherently to herself. The demon, however, watched the figure sipping wine curiously, having not engaged in contact with other lifeforms in a while, and the superstitious crazy Miss Filimer was not the most pleasant traveling companion.

He didn't even know why they were out this late, although the few things he could impress from his Contractor's hazy and muddled thoughts were few and far between. The only word that kept popping up was 'them,' quite possibly the most unhelpful and vague word in the entire spoken language.

The demon's gaze then focused onto that which the man held in his hand, inspecting from afar the glass of wine. Hesitantly, he began to drift closer, as if testing his limits.

The Alchemist snickered. Shadows were no place to hide when you were dealing with the world of the dark. Shadows were where creatures like him saw things the clearest, understood things the best. To hide there was to stand in the brightest light.

The biggest difference was that while light covered, the darkness caressed and invaded.

He let his own Shadows flex, feeling about and touching the air about him, feeling and freeing the energies that were about. He chuckled, sipping from his glass and turning his eyes to the concentration of darkness that he could feel.

"So...you're Contracted then..." Rethen murmured, flashing his fangs in a grin. "For one so meek to take such a step..." he laughed and turned his eyes back to the girl, the green behind his eyes flashing violently, "you must be desperate.

The Alchemist laughed. With a snap, shattered the candlestick in his metallic hand, creating a platter and dropping a bit of wine into the dish before dropping it to the table. He smirked.

"For your less-than-human companion. For you, I have a glass. Will you sit?"
