Mephiskapheles is one of my top 3 ska bands. And I was talking to Farnoush yesterday and mentioned them, and she had never heard of them. Well, I realize they're very underground, so most people haven't heard a thing about them. So, a short intro;
Mephiskapheles were a charging power in the New York ska revival back in about 1990. The year they formed, 1990, was when the band was actually formed in the East Village by lead vocalist the Grand Invidious, guitarist Brendog and keyboardist Brian Martin. After this the band recruited it's classic line-up of bassist Michael Bitz, trumpeter Osho Endo, alto saxophonist Alexander McCabe, and trombonist Greg Robinson, which shortly was followed by constant touring. In about, 1994 I believe, they joined up with a producer by the name Bill Laswell to record their debut CD entitled, God Bless Satan, originally issued on Pass the Virgin label. Eventually in 1996, with their new drummer Wayne Dunton on deck, Mephiskapheles toured the entire U.S. opening for the Buzzcocks. (which I wish I could've gone to see! D: ) Their second album, Maximum Perversion, was released a year later, followed in 1999 by Might-Ay White-Ay. Currently, the line-up is as stands, and I believe they are currently touring off the re-release of God Bless Satan. The band does bill themselves as a "satanic ska band" But in reality the lyrics are quite quirky, goofy, and on the whole ridiculous. The songs are also very up-beat in most cases.
Okay, maybe that's just a bit long. ^^; Anyway, for a great intro to the band I suggest "The Bumble Bee Tuna Song", it's my bands' personal favorite.

The Bumble Bee Tuna Song is the first one I downloaded by them and er...the only one. I haven't listened to it for aaaages. Maybe I'll download more of their stuff once I set up Limewire again.
