"No, no, no, no! We need to get this thing together today."
Lord Alexei Lochnen, and old and influencial man, shook fiercely his head at the engineers. God, how he hated it. It had taken him years to complete the schemes of the airship, and another few years to get Chicago building it. Now that it was nearly finished, people came complaining that it might not be such a good idea, while others - like the engineers - claimed this piece of technology, this masterwork, would bring death upon us all. Ha! The fools. Did they really think that he, Alexei, would order things to be build without double, what is he thinking, triple checking everything? He wasn't like those bussinessmen from Cairo who only cared about money. No, he was a real scientist from Moskov. He was a perfectionist. He couldn't allow himself the slightest of mistakes, especially if it could cost lives!
"But, lord, the men are complaining that the working shifts are physically too heavy." "Read my lips. I. Don't. Care.", he said word for word. "Your engineers are getting paid twice, no three times the pay you normally would earn. Once it's finished, you could probably retire and buy yourself a private beach out there."
Alexei sighed. He was standing at the newly build port that would soon serve as landing base for the airship. People walked on and off, pointing at the construction, gossiping. Luckily there were guards around. Alexei hated it when commoners walked in to interupt him with their comments, their triffles and their fears. He had serious bussiness to do here, and it required utmost concentration.
"Fine. Go take a break. Go find some new capable men. I don't care as long it is finished today, you hear me? This project should have been finished a week ago!"
The chief engineer nodded and walked off, rolling his eyes as he gestured his crew some orders.
Stirnly, Alexei looked at the airship. They were behind on shedule, and with that the entire project still wasn't finished. He had men to recruit. Volunteers, or at preferably a crew of able-bodied men. Adventurers. In other words, another haggling time on payment. The risk was high, what with Ahma not being a 100% safe itself. Considering that the whole airship's Ahma use was based on theory, it always held risks.
But if it worked... he, Alexei Lochnen, would be immortal in the minds of scientists, famous all over Earth as the biggest technomancer and scientist of his time. And that, that was worth every little bit of frustration now.

Mellisa Havisham was propped up under the left back end of the engine when she heard the Chief Engineer's boots come stomping by. She didn't even bother to roll back out from under the airship to talk to him.
"Wait, don't tell me. Deadline hasn't been moved, despite the fact that we have at least 368 man-hours left wanting on the Lord's airship, and only 8 engineers that haven't left to sleep yet. That's... 46 hours of work each, and that's if we don't lose any more to sleep deprivation."
The chief engineer sighed as a response. Part of him had always resented hiring a woman engineer, especially one more talented than he, which was part of the reason he made sure the Lord didn't even know she existed. The payroll even specifically noted her as Mel Havisham, just in case.
"Look, no one is going to ask you to stay." He boasted. "We can finish her on our own." The effect was ruined suddenly by a loud snore coming from a nearby roll-cart under another section of engine.
"Well, you don't have to." Mellisa replied. "I'm staying on, even once she's up in the air, and you can't do a thing about it. I'm one of the few that can work the slings and fix her on the go-" the slings being a plank on ropes with a metal clip that should allow the crew to make minor repairs on the engine even while she was in the air, despite any turns or dips it might make " and I was already approved. I'm on the list."
"But Lord Lochnen..." the chief started, and then he sighed. He couldn't very well tattle on the girl, or he would be called out as well. And this pay check was one he needed- it would carry him out the rest of the year, after all.
Mellisa waited to hear a rebuttal, but when none came, she chuckled.
"Look, run along and get me a Bailey's and coffee, with a straw, and I bet you I can make up for lost time. While you're at it, roll Snory over there out of the way for me, and I'll get to that bit in a few."
The chief engineer hated this. He hated Mellisa for this, specifically. He resented Lord Alexei for the pressure they'd been put under, so much so that he'd been forced to accept Mellisa's help. So far he'd kept it from the Lord how integral to the ship she'd been, and as much as he wished it never became known, she was already on the list to sail as part of the crew. As long as he got paid before Lord Lochnen knew the truth, he'd be happy enough.
The chief walked away, pulling Greir- the sleeping mechanic- out from under the chasis as he passed. After all, he still had a lot to get done, including, apparently, getting that tart a drink. He tried to focus ahead to payday, and both Mellisa and Lord Pain-in-the-a** leaving. That would be nice.

A little bald man arrived. "Lord Lochnen."
With disgust, Lord Alexei recognised the man's voice as being one of the most hateful, two-faced nobles in Chicago. Sad part was, if he as so little but denied the man's talents, a big heap of money would stop flowing into the project. With a trained discipline of years of experience, Lord Alexei turned around and flashed a smile.
"Baron Hunterson." "How are the works going?" "Once again... another day over time."
The man barely hid his anger, keeping up a smile. Lord Alexei knew him all too well that one more wrong answer would have the man explode in a myriad of words on how he's been wasting so much money on a failed project, a project that won't earn them anything and blah blah blah.
"I see.", the bald man spoke with cold calmth. "Weeelll... you know my point of view. And the deal." "Of course, Baron. By the end of this month..." "Indeed."
The end of this month was but 10 days away. That was all what was left as time; by then, the air ship should have had her first test flight. If not, the little toad would stop funding the project. And since he had funded over half of the project on his own, it would also make him the legitime owner of the air ship and the whole project. A risky deal Lord Lochnen was obliged to make.
Luckily, the little man said nothing more and left again. His anger had made place for a hidden pleasure, the very idea of being able to take it all away.
"You!"
A guard nearly jumped up in surprise.
"Go fetch me a Writer. Recruiting must start asap." "Aye, Lord."
As the guard ran off, once again, Lord Alexei watched the airship's progress broodingly.
