The Story

Eons ago, before the beginning of recorded history here on Earth, terrible and powerful beings roamed the planet. These beings ruled all the peoples of the world, forcing slavery upon them and demanding obedience. The beings were revered as gods, but feared as well, for to raise their ire meant certain death. In time these beings grew greedy, lusting for power and control. They fought one another, using the humans as soldiers, but soon grew tired of this and turned their attention outward, to the stars and away from this small rock.

A wise and powerful sage raised an army to combat this force, which was so great as to threaten the whole of the universe. At the head of this army were the champions of Earth, six master warriors, greater than any other. In the final and most harrowing battle the sage granted the six champions great power to allow them to finish the fight once and for all, though this diminished his own power greatly. In the final moments the sage was slain.

The champions went on to win the battle, but without the sage's power were unable to destroy the lords who led the army of darkness. They stripped them of their physical forms, forcing them to live half-lives, existing only in spiritual form. They were able to see the world, but not interract with it. In time they consolidated their power with the lesser beings which were vanquished, which allowed them to interract with the physical world, resulting in short periods of resurgence. As long as evil continued to spring forth the champions, dubbed 'Rangers' remained ever vigilant. Their legacy continued until at last it seemed the wellsprings of evil had finally run dry, and the Rangers were allowed to vanish, assuring those left that, when the time came and the Earth needed them, the Rangers would return.

Now

It has been centuries since Rangers walked the earth. The Ranger command center, located in a city which is now called Ash Peaks, has fallen into disrepair. Many doors no longer function, making lower levels inaccessible. Surrounding plantlife has grown into it in places, sections of roof are collapsed and leak upon the floor, and many parts are rusted.

Locations

Ash Peaks is a middle-sized city, surrounded by mountains, the largest of which is an inactive volcano. The city is relatively young and utilizes geothermal and hydroelectric energy to supply power to the grid. In addition, the city is isolated and the next city over is a fair distance away. Other than the occasional stories of spooks, it's a fairly quiet city, overall, where not much happens. Sure it has its share of crime, and teenagers will be teenagers anywhere you go, but it's all rather mild compared to some other cities. The rare visitor says it's odd how peaceful the city seems considering all that goes on behind the scenes.

Important Places

The Command Center
Just outside the city, among the craggy peaks, sits an old observatory that's been there as long as anyone remembers. No one visits that old place. Some say it's haunted, most agree it's derelict, but no one is willing to shell out the money to take it down.

What none of them know is that there's a secret just under the floor of the building. The Power Ranger Command Center has rested here for millenia. There are so many levels to the complex that it would seem to go on endlessly. Only the first floor is accessible. This is where the main chamber is located. Computers line the walls, as powerful as they are ancient.

It was 3:20 pm, and a beautiful cloudless Friday. Beautiful for the students anyway, as the high school was just letting out, which meant it was the beginning of the weekend. Across the city kids rejoiced, looking forward to their little break.

The temperature was mild and nothing was out of the ordinary for the five teenagers whose lives were about to be changed forever....

Car looked up at the clock and saw that it read 3:25. He could hear the buses loading and pulling away one by one outside, he could see the older students making their way to the parking lot where they made their way out. He looked around the room and saw that he was alone.

All alone in detention on a Friday, with the one teacher sick enough to stay to watch him. He guessed he deserved it, because he pulled the fire alarm, and this would teach him a lesson about something or something. Speeches like that were always lost on him. It was funny every time, so why would anyone not pull the fire alarm? That's what he really wanted to know.

He slumped down in his seat, pulled out a book, and settled in to pretend to read for a while.

Kylie closed the door behind her with a soft click. She had been speaking with the science teacher about a possible after school club, with her being the president. It was still in the early stages but both her and the teacher were hopeful. First she would have to get signatures from at least 10 students, then the club could be made official. She pushed her hair behind her right ear with a smile on her face. She already knew of a few students who would be interested, but that would have to wait until tomorrow.

Holding the clipboard with the empty signature list on the outside of her other books she headed down the main hallway of the school. Lockers hung quietly to each side of her, many of the students were already in their cars or on the buses headed home. Kylie preferred to walk, as long as the weather permitted. On her way out, she spied the detention room, as she passed her eyes glanced in the window, only one student was sitting inside. "I wonder if he is the one who pulled the fire alarm earlier." Not too much happens at school so it is usually pretty obvious who got in trouble and for what.

She pushed through the double doors and made her way down the steps, her shoes making tapping noises on the way down. At the bottom Kylie gazed around the front of the school, it too was close to empty, save for a few students milling about. One particular student, whom had bullied her before, noticed her. Not good... She clutched her books tighter and attempted to walk casually, taking a not so strait path towards the sidewalk. It didn't matter, it was already too late.

"Hey Kylie!"

She made a worried noise in her throat and started to walk faster. The other student already had a hand on her shoulder. "Where are you going in such a hurry?"

"I'm just walking home." She tried to make her voice sound strong.

He turned her around so Kylie was now facing him. "Come on bookworm, Didn't I tell you to do my homework?" He looked to his friends and they all started laughing.

"Stop making fun of me. Just leave me alone." She jerked away from him and narrowed her eyes. The judo that her brother had been teaching her made her more confident to stand up for herself.

The student made to grab her again but Kylie moved her body back, dropping her books in the process, and he only grabbed air. "I said, leave. Me. Alone." Her heart started to race. Kylie had never actually used what her brother had taught her, but this is exactly why he did. She didn't want to hurt anyone, just be able to defend herself.

There was a moment of silence. ..."Whatever..." The student scoffed, backed away slightly then turned and left, him and his friends still making snide remarks that they would find her later. The bullying was usually only verbal but her brother Kyle insisted she learn Judo, just in case things ever got worse.

Kylie sighed with utter relief and moved to scoop up her fallen books.

Konrad stood staring blankly at the countertop next to the cash register and wondered how long had the finish on it been in such a state of decay. Peeling away in its own sort of inanimate death. It was sad that all because the St. Uthers Thrift Store was for the less fortunate that the building had to look so derelict. Several times he had told the manager, miss Betsy Miller, that he would happily do some maintenance around the place. Considering the fact that he was simply a volunteer, he didn’t think that it would matter if he fixed stuff or sat behind the counter. Ms. Miller disagreed, for some reason thinking that the lack of money was a reason to let things fall apart. He would do it for free, and even would do it with free supplies. Nevertheless the stubborn woman was content with letting the place have that nice “falling apart” look and smell wonky from years of people failing to do a thorough job at cleaning. Konrad thought that it would be much more suitable to have a building with a nice presentation so that potential customers were not skeptical about going in there. If the building looks like crap, then it is likely everything in it was crap as well. Konrad got all of his possessions from St. Uthers. His parents, the gay couple who agreed to take him in full time, did not make enough money between the two of them to buy him all the stuff he needs. They had saved up to be able to afford to keep him for a year, and when he begged them to allow him to stay they agreed on the condition that he would work to get himself whatever he needed. This was not anything new to Konrad so he agreed. Not wanting to have to go back to the homeland.

It was right about now that all the other kids would be getting out of school. Since it was Konrad’s senior year, he was allowed to leave two class periods early to go volunteer. Though it didn’t make him any money, he got free clothes and volunteer hours looked good when applying for scholarships. Konrad had no idea what he wanted to do for a career, he just new that whatever it was, it would be something that he chose for himself. Something that he enjoyed. He looked down at the camouflaged clothing that he was wearing. Old habits died hard. The forest-colored camouflage was like an anchor holding him to his memories, his training. That he always must be prepared, that anything could happen anytime. How many were lost failing such preparation tests Konrad could not even fathom. He was one of the many who learned quick enough to survive. Now he was living in somewhere that offered freedom, and he loved it. He had choice, and with choice he found happiness.

The store was empty and he stretched out and waited calmly for something interesting to happen.

Freedom.
It had been awhile since the bell’s grating ring had filled Ty with so much joy. Today, school was like a prison and exiting out its doors was almost like a distant dream. It’s not that she hated school; school wasn't really that tedious. Sure, she didn't pay much attention at times and the majority of her notebooks were filled with anything but notes, but it beat a 9-to-5. She wanted to avoid that situation as much as possible, and school was the perfect excuse. However, today was a day where school was indeed tedious and it felt liberating to step out it doors. For today, the image of the pond she passed on her way in had plagued her throughout the day and now she was finally standing before it.

With a small sigh of relief Ty sat down along the banks of the lake and removed a leather-bound book that had seen better day. It was worn, ripped, and stained and its interior wasn't any better yet it didn't deter her one bit. Grasping within the cloth bag once more, she retrieved several drawing materials and opened the aged book to a blank page. She wasn't really good at observational drawing, but there was something to a brief, informal sketch that seemed rewarding. Vibrant shades of color were thrown down first in pastel, then aggressively disrupted by harsh, gestural marks reflecting the objects scattered within her vision. Once again, the dream-like haze had come over her, enthralled by the existing image before her and the intangible world in her hands. However, dreams always faded, and as the sun shifted from a vivid yellow to an amber glow so did her mind from euphoria to reality. She reflected for a moment at the drawing she had created then ripped it out and crumbled it within her hands.

With one last look of the scenery, Ty placed her sketching materials within her messenger bag and began heading home once more, the crumpled image dancing in the breeze.

Car couldn't keep focused for very long with his nose in a book, and it was obvious the teacher didn't really care what he was doing. He glanced at the clock several times over as many minutes, counting the seconds until he could get away. After a little while of this he began to tap his fingers on his desk, looking at the teacher to see what effect this had. He then began to tap his feet. He made it loud, attempting to bother the teacher as much as he could. Eventually he began to drum on the desk, snickering inside.

Elsewhere~

An ancient but advanced console sprang to life and began tracking five teenagers. Among others withing the teleportation radius, these five stood out. These five alone had the courage, the conviction, the attitude to accomplish the colossal task set before them, if only enough power could be routed into the teleporter to bring them all...

~

Car stopped his drumming all at once, hearing a droning from somewhere. He was completely silent, barely even breathing, trying to place the noise. It was unlike any car he'd ever heard, that was certain. It was almost like an electric motor, but lower, like the sound that comes from a transformer. It started out quiet, but grew louder and gave him a headache. He began to feel lightheaded and nauseous. His stomach seemed to clinch up, as if something were trying to reach inside, then his skin began crawl, then to itch terribly.
"Oh god.... Uh... could I go to the bathroom?"
The teacher looked up and gestured toward the door to give the ok. If he had to go to the bathroom and had been holding it, then that would have explained all the tapping.
Car rose and ran out the door and down the hall, where he immediately fell.

He tumbled across the floor and came to a sudden and abrupt halt as he crashed into an ancient but advanced console. He was disoriented from the sudden trip and his head was spinning. There was a taste like blood in his mouth and he didn't know where he was. His first instinct was to jump up and look around. The room was almost completely dark except for some dim overhead lights that flickered. The console he'd crashed into was big and solid, and he could see that the paneling on one end had been removed. Something of a golden metallic hue protruded from underneath, and when Car examined it he saw that it seemed to be a robot with several wires removed and crossed with those from the console.

Trudging through the cityscape, Ty’s wandering mind finally returned to going through the everyday motions. It wasn’t long until her aged boots had hit the pavement of the downtown square which swelled with chaos- the rush hour was at hand. Nameless faces passed as the teen walked on, nearly oblivious to her immediate surroundings. The flash of a small, neon figure caught her eye luckily, halting her path as traffic rushed by. Though the surge of air and noxious pollutants were repugnant enough to catch an individual’s attention, Ty’s remained on the small, crimson man threatening her not to move. That’s when it hit.

It started gradually, a small hum so inaudible she felt her ears perk to uncover its source. As they began to hone in on the tone’s location, all other noises ceased to an ominous silence. That hum… With a sharp exhale she uncovered a second rhythm added to the fray , one which came from her chest. She could hear her heart rate slow, no, race now. It fluxed so rapidly, so loudly… It began to pick up and finally she couldn’t gauge its pace at all. However, that was the least of her worries for the beat of her chest was soon replaced with the numbing hum of the small man once more. The noble gases that caused his brilliance danced in excitement, their melody deafening as passing cars chimed in as did incoherent blathering from bystander within proximity. Her immobile trance was broken as she held her head in pain.

"What’s.." she muttered softly as the resonance continued on, her words muffled by that sound. It was too much, she couldn’t stand it anymore, couldn’t fight it. Giving in, her heavy lids shut as her body felt back to the ground below.

In the brief time her body fell, Ty had expected several outcomes- mainly the hitting of a fellow pedestrian or the fine tax-dollars in bricklaying work on the back of her head- yet as she hit the ground below she found it cool and very smooth. Hitting the surface with a small grunt, she laid there for a moment before realizing the whole ordeal was over. Coming to, she sat up to find herself within a scene of color blotches and vague silhouettes. Her hands flustered for a moment around her before finding her glasses and placing them back upon her brow. This new sight seemed more surreal than the one before. Inaudible for words, she just sat there for a moment taking it all in.

With her book firmly pressed against her body, her arms wrapped around them, she walked slowly down the sidewalk. Her head hanging down, counting the lines in the cement as they went by, one, two, three. On the fourth line a strange buzzing noise, an electric lull like from a light bulb, started to fill her ears. Kylie stopped short and gazed up at the sky.

"Where is that coming from?"

She clutched her books tighter and turned quickly to face behind her, yet still she saw nothing that would logically make that sound. It grew louder in her ears, so loud that it started to become painful. She adjusted her books so she could lift her right hand to her ear, it brought no relief. Kylie shut her eyes tightly, willing the sound and the pain to stop.

Kylie felt a strange sensation that ran the length of her body starting from her toes to the crown of her head. A second later, silence and with it no pain. She opened one eye first, her body relaxing as she took in what was around her, then the second eye as she continued to look around. The objects around her were obscure, things she had never seen before and yet they seemed familiar, all at the same time. They all seemed electrical with switches and nobs but they seemed, old, dusty, and overgrown. Then she noticed that there were two others within her proximity.

She stepped back to face them, seeing that one was on the floor she offered her hand. "Where am I? What's going on here?"
