I know that many are in California, there's a couple here in the midwest including Emerald City Steampunk Expo, and TeslaCon.
Maybe there could be meetups at these cons? Gaian Steampunks unite?

Well, there is a broad science-fiction/fantasy convention in Minnesota every year around the 4th of july called CONvergence, and every year there is a bunch of steampunk stuff so if you are in the area you should stop by and check that one out smile if you want more info you can just google CONvergence and it'll pop right up smile

There usually is a really small convention in North Georgia around late March/early-to-mid April. And recently, I found out about several meetups that are organized at various Atlanta area places:

I don't know much about the second, but the first is really small. Maybe fifty or so people at most show up and there are only a few panels and dealer tables. Hopefully, next time around there will be more, but because gas prices were so high a lot of people apparently couldn't afford the commute for such a short and small con.

I just came back from PDXGearcon this past weekend. It's held in Portland OR. And I must say I had a fantastic time. Especially for a con pulled together in about 5 months.
And there's also Steamcon in Seattle WA. That's normally every November.
