I was goth
before it became a fashion statement
I was goth
before it became a trend
I was goth
with black magic marker on my nails
I was goth
with black dye on my clothes
I was goth
when people were scared of me
I was goth
when they thought I was sucidial
I was goth
with homemade tattoos
I was goth

I wear black all the time, but I don't think I'm goth. I listen to the wrong music - lots of Evanescence or Linkin Park, which I don't classify as goth music.

Goth is a frame of mind and beliefs....Not going with the flow of society, accepting it's okay to not be happy all the time in fact sometimes you need it! The music doesn't matter as long as it expresses what you feel.

its called
Black is me
Looking around a the world I see the bright colors.
Looking around I see the smiling people.
Now looking into the mirror I see the ugle truth, I see myself.
I see the tears I try so hard to hide.
The black is now my life, the black consumes all color.
I dress in all black, it makes a statment and shows the real me.
The black will for ever reman on the outside.
It helpes keep the black of my soul on the in side.
I'll stay true to the color black.
I'll stay true to the real me.
I know whats inportined to me, and the truth to the black is me.
The secreats behind black lie in my soul.
the secreates to me are locked in my mind.

I'm sorry but this... no. DO your research. Hot Topic is owned by The Gap. And, if you read the above lines (by the author of the poem)... it has nothing to do with where you shop. Goth is a state of mind, and the REAL goths I know would rip you apart and tear your throat out for saying that. I'm sorry, but I don't go around saying I'm goth even though I have blood-red fingernails, I wear corsets, and leather collars. My entire wardrobe is black. But I'm not a goth, and I never said I was.

THANK YOU. Someone who understands. I like you. And compliments to your well-written poem. 3nodding

I'm not goth, and I don't think it matters if anyone is or isn't. If most people can't choose to face the facts that we are all different and unique in our own ways, then, I say, screw most people. xp

each generation has a group that rises against the rules of society until the ideals of the people get trampled on by fashion companies and made into a fashion statement. The hippies, the disco era, the headbangers, alternatives, and now goths. Every original ideal eventually becomes a fashion statement!

I really enjoy your poem! They say all the original ideals have been taken since man first learned to write and we are just writing variants on these ideals. I don't believe that. What you are writing is an original idea, you reach people that might not have the chance to be exposed to someone else. You put your feelings into words that will reach a person that someone else's might not. Please keep writing!

I'd like to start by saying the simplistic style of the work was very refreshing, and I felt like it's style exemplified the work itself, which is very cool. I don't read a lot of poetry like this so it's cool for a change.

The second poem was also good, in a very like... acutely emotional way. It speaks on another level.

To the discussion: The thing is that labeling a set of ideas as "goth" is conforming in a way. Maybe conforming to a different norm, but conforming to a norm all the same. Which is why I've never really understood the movement. I mean, sometimes I wear all black with a trenchcoat and people are like "are you goth or something"? And I'm like, "no, this is just how I wanted to dress today". I wear all sorts of stuff, and it just expresses who I am. If what I wear is persieved as preppy, stoner, goth, or whatever, I don't really care. It's just how I choose to express myself. The same thing goes for all the other manifestions of "gothness". One word labels aren't ever good enough to try and describe who you are, and to subject yourself to them seems like cheapening the beauty that comes from the simple complexities of the soul.

I mean if you were really trying to go against the flow of society, why choose black? Why not purple? I'm sure far less people have died their clothes purple (I'm one of them).

Edit: Hahahahaha... Wrong dyed... That's too hillarious to change though.

I say we're all free to say what we want with our own opinions about what we are and what we are not and nothing can change how we feel about ourselves without us changing it. I wore goth pants and goth boots and just because I wore a blackheart t shirt with my outfit people were saying in quite angered tones that I wasn't goth. Well to hell with that, I say whether I feel goth or not it's a state of mind not a conformation.

society feels the need to lump everyone into groups. Even if you think you are an original chances are you are put into a group. We all belong to one gruop or another depending on what day it is and how we act, we dress, or how we feel. Yea for society!
