A cold, weak breeze swept through the small village. The dark clouds loathed above in the sky. The village showed no sign of life, the homes were empty and dark. The doors of the houses were scratched up, they blew open and close with the breeze as it grew stronger. The village gates were a dark red, the spears were all merely sticks now, the metal tips were on the ground under them. A man slowly approached the village, his clothing was a strange color. It was red and blue, a blue cloak, with red clothing under it. At his side was a sword tucked into it's scabbard. His dark hair hung over his eyes. He would continually glance up into the sky at the clouds, then back at the village. He looked to be in his late teens. "What's wrong with this village?" Asked the man to himself. He walked over to the gate, and bent over to pick up a spear head. He examined it closely, the spear heads had bite marks in them. He tossed it aside, and focused again on the clouds. He then sighed as he walked into the village. "Hello?" Called out the man in a loud, yet shivering tone. "Is anyone here? Anyone at all?" Cried out the man as his eyes quickly scanned the village. His legs began to shake. "What happened here? The doors.." He looked at the clawed doors. "What attacked this place?" The clouds stretched over the village, less and less light was able to break through the defensive clouds. The man looked up at the clouds, he frowned. "The clouds are stretching, yet not moving?" He then saw the clouds grow downward, like a curtain closing around the village. "What?" The man ran as fast as he could, but be stopped when he saw the cloud was too fast, a barrier of dark fluff locked him within the village. He quickly unsheathed his blade, and swiped at the cloud wall. Nothing happened. He reached his hand through, he cried out in pain as he fell back. A bite mark was left in his arm. "What the hell?!" He quickly jumped to his feet to examine his new wound. He felt the indents in his skin. "At least it didn't break skin." Mumbled the man. He heard growling through the clouds, from the sides, and above. He looked all around him. He ran into a house, and shut the door. He sat down and shivered. "What's happening?" Asked the man, half hoping to hear a response. "I-I have to be a man, I need to confront what's out there, for all the lives that were lost in this village!" Shouted the man as he jumped to his feet, and reached to his side. A look of fear was visible on his face. He dropped his sword out there. He opened the door slowly, the growling was much louder now. He popped his head through the opening and looked around. His sword was lying next to the cloud wall, where he had left it. He let out a sigh of relief. He gulped, and with a quick battle cry, charged out from the doorway to his sword. He jumped at it, and grabbed it's hilt. He lifted it up and swung it about in the air while he lied on his back with his eyes closed. He felt something drip on him. He opened his eyes to see a dot of blood on his cloak. A large beast stood over him, a small wound in it's arm. The beast was covered in a strange kind of armor, it's leathery skin was a dark red. He scowled when it felt the blood drip from it's arm. He raised it's clawed hand, and swiped at the man. He barely managed to block, but was pushed and he rolled about on his side until he bumped into a house. He stood up slowly, the beast walked towards him on hind legs. It was much larger than him. He clutched his sword with both hands, and took a stance, but he couldn't keep from shaking. "T-This thing is going to kill me!" Exclaimed the man as he pressed back against the wall, his sword still held out before him. The beast's wound was completely healed now. "It even recovered quickly!" Shouted the man in fear. "I can't die yet!" He closed his eyes and ran forward with a sword. I'll die honorably, for those that died in his village by this beast's hands, and for her! He lunged his sword forward. The beast quickly sidestepped, and slashed the man's right arm. He yelled out in pain as he almost dropped his sword. He held his arm tightly, to stop the bleeding, his sword hung loosely in his right hand. The beast charged in at him. The man barely managed to dodge it's swinging claws. It quickly turned and smacked him with the side of it's arm. The blow sent the man back through the air, and landed on the ground. He cringed as he tried to stand. "Damn it..." Mumbled the man. He looked up at the beast that advanced towards him. "Not yet..." He pushed himself up, he could feel his bones cracking. He stood there for a moment, trying to calm himself. He kept his eyes closed as he ran in. He opened his eyes to see the beast attempt to dodge. He quickly countered and his sword pierced through the beast's chest. The plate body it wore was old, and the sword was able to go through it with ease. The beast howled as it swiped it's claws wildly as it stepped back. The man was slashed on the side, he dropped his sword as he fell to his knees. The beast tumbled backwards, and it's breathing was loud and fast. It slowly stopped, and the beast lied there in it's own blood. The clouds began to disperse. "The shaking hero has done it again..." Said the man with a weak grin. "But it looks like this is the end of my adventure..." He felt the blood pour out from his side. "Maybe this battle will change me into the courageous hero..." The man collapsed face down onto the ground. He lied in his own puddle of blood. The dark cloud was small in the sky, but the blackness soon became dark red. A cloaked figure ran out from the nearby forest. "I must get him away from here before it comes to check." Said the figure as it looked down at the bloody man. "He has started something that will change the world...What a brave idiot."

The huge crescent moon loomed over a small house in the nearby forest. The sounds of owls was all that could be heard, with the occasional howl of a passing wolf. Inside the small, wooden home was a stone fireplace. One bed was being used by a woman, and on the floor, the man lied and snored loudly. He rolled around and mumbled things in his sleep. The woman that lied in her bed listen to it all with an irritated face. Her cloak hung beside the bed. She slowly took a step out of her bed. She was young, about the man's age. She had long brown hair that ran down her back. She wore a long, gown. Her eye twitched as she lifted her leg back, and swung it into the side of the man. He yelped and rolled over. He quickly sat up and looked around. His hands moved over his body, feeling his wounds. They were bandaged, and the pain was almost none existent. He looked around the room after getting it through his head that he wasn't dead. The wooden walls looked weak, and dirty. There was no fire in the fireplace, and an angry woman stood over him with her arms crossed. "Did you help me?" Asked the man in a somewhat frightened tone. "Of course." Answered the woman as she let her arms fall to her sides. "I brought you here after the little battle you were in..." Said the woman as she sat on her bed. "You snore a lot, you know." "Huh? Wait, you saw the battle?" Asked the man as a grin slowly grew on his face. "Well, I saw a dead demon and you, I merely assumed." Said the woman with a confident voice. "Now, you're fully aware of what you started, correct?" Asked the woman. "What I started? Yep, I avenged those people and-" "Wrong. What you did was force the darkness's attention to focus on us more. You might of triggered a war with that little revenge battle of yours." Said the woman as sighed. "W-what?! I-I just killed one demon, that's all. That couldn't trigger a war!" Exclaimed the man, he was shaking. "Get a hold of yourself." Said the womanly calmly, but an angry and demanding tone could be heard. The man stopped shaking. "It might not cause a war, but there's a good chance. Whether you know it or not, that demon you killed was a higher-up in the demon food chain in there darkness." Said the woman. "You killed someone equivalent to a small king." "W-What?!" The man quickly jumped to his feet. "I could never defeat something like-" "Whether not you thought you could, you did. And that will bring some more demons here. Now, do you know what someone does when they spot a demon?" Asked the woman as she crossed her legs. "They run?" "Yes, and where to?" "Home?" "Wrong, to whatever defense they have, they will tell whatever kingdom reigns over them. They will send knights there, creating a small skirmish. Now, the demons aren't happy when opposed. When an opposing kingdom attacks them, they'll assume it was the kingdom that originally killed that demon king you slayed." "And that will trigger a war?" "Exactly, but you're awfully strong, you'll have to aid any army opposing the demons, you know?" "I-I do? But it would be their problem-" "Eh! Wrong, you started this, you will be what ends it. Thus, participating in the many wars is but one thing of many that you must do." "B-But..." "Now, don't think this all is sad and gloom." Said the woman as she smiled. "What you've done was a triggered a war bound to happen, the demons have slayed humans for years, the darkness and our world are linked, but only demons know how to travel here. They come, they kill, they leave. If we win, that cycle will end. You'll be saving the lives of millions!" "But I can't possibly fight demons! It was a fluke that I won before, nothing more." He looked down to his face, he felt shame as he spoke, "I'm a coward, nothing more, I won by a mere chance of luck, I'm not a skilled warrior, or knight, I just got caught up in it, and felt like I needed to end it..." "Well, what confidence you have!" Exclaimed the woman sarcastically."Don't you worry, you cowardly hero, we'll have allies!" "We?" "Why, I'm joining in on the fun too!" Said the woman with a large grin. "A coward needs someone brave, to even it out. You won by no mere fluke. You're powerful, defeating a demon of that rank without dying, that is no chance of luck, you won through skill and strength. We just need to perfect it." "How?" "We'll start sparring, of course. The ring of two blades clashing against one another always brings out the best in me." She smiled at the man. "And I can tell it will with you too. You've got a sense of justice, I bet nothing feels better then clashing blades to save a life." She grinned. "By the way, what's your name?" Asked the woman. "Benkei." Answered the man. "Benkei, eh? I believe I heard that somewhere before, but no matter, my name is Yuki." "Alright Yuki." Said Benkei with a grin. "Well, if it will give me a chance to gain some reputation and save lives, I guess I'm in, I can't let others die because of my actions!" "I would of been moved if you weren't shaking the whole time." Said Yuki with a laugh as she watched Benkei look down to see his legs shaking. "Eh..."

The sun hovered above the small woods, the beams of light pierced the tree tops. Yuki was sitting outside on the stone doorstep. She let out a loud sigh, and looked up. She closed her eyes. "Well, this is-" "Splinter!" Shouted Benkei from within the house. Yuki's eyes shot open and she turned to face the opening door. Benkei walked out and flicked a shard of wood into the grass. "Why did I have to sleep on the floor?" Asked Benkei as he rubbed his back. "A gentleman always lets the woman have the bed, it's only natural." Said Yuki. "Besides, it's my house." "But I was the one injured! A hard wooden floor with splinters hiding in every shadow isn't going to speed up my recovery!" Exclaimed Benkei as he rubbed his wounds. "Quit complaining, be a man." Said Yuki as she shot him a cold glare. Benkei stopped talking. "Now, let's get something to eat." Said Yuki as she sat up and stretched. "Bring your sword." "Are we-" "We're hunting!" Laughed Yuki, her laugh sounded like a crazed war cry." Benkei was too afraid to object, so he fetched his sword, and follow Yuki into the woods. "I never thought the woods here were so big..." Said Benkei as he looked around. The trees were much larger then the small house, the ground was littered with dead leaves, and twigs. He swatted at bugs that viciously attacked him. "Why are the bugs only after me?" Cried Benkei. "Because they're too afraid to attack me." Said Yuki with a devilish grin. Benkei was silent, and just swatted the bugs away. He wondered what Yuki is. They ventured deeper and deeper into the woods. Less sunlight could enter through the trees now, and the shadows were big enough for something to hide in. "Do we have to go so deep?" Asked Benkei. "How else are we going to catch something big?" Replied Yuki. "The bigger they are, the bigger the shadows need to be for them to hide." "...Do you have a plan for when we run into one?" Asked Benkei. "Of course, I'm not idiot." Said Yuki. "We kill it!" Benkei sighed and followed. She's a lot more carefree during the day. Thought Benkei as he watched her lead the way through the shrouds of darkness. Benkei stopped, "I think I heard something." Said Benkei. "Oh?" She looked around and walked back to him. "If you hear a strange noise, you investigate, so come on." Said Yuki as she pulled him. "But-" "You killed a lesser demon king." Said Yuki in an irritated tone. "You can kill some animal." "I told you that was a fluke!" Said Benkei. "Well, if it was a mere fluke like you keep saying, then lets hope we're lucky." Said Yuki with a shrug. "Because something's watching us." "Eh?!" Benkei clenched his sword with both hands, and looked around. His eyes soon met with two green glowing eyes in a shadow. He was frozen with fear. "Now now, don't be a coward, go in there and slay it." Said Yuki as she leaned against a tree." "Hey, aren't you going to help?!" "What, me? Why, I'm a maiden in distress here, save me." Said Yuki with almost no emotion, only a slight giggle. Benkei gulped and faced the beast. He held his sword tightly, the tip pointed towards the beast. Benkei closed his eyes and charged in. His sword was stopped, he opened his eyes to see the jaws of a strange beast clenched on the blade. It growled at him as it swiped it's claws. Benkei jumped back, his sword dropped to the ground. The beast moved closer. "What warrior drops his sword?" Asked Yuki, her eye twitched. "I'm no warrior!" Exclaimed Benkei. "Then become one." Said Yuki. "Eh?" "Kill it, oh great warrior~!" Sung Yuki with a grin. "So great, so powerful, the cowardly hero is here~!" Benkei ignored her and focused on the beast. It charged in at him. He took a stance, and punched the beast in it's snout. Benkei and the beast both fell back. Benkei's legs were shaking too much to be stable. Blood dripped down the beast's face. It snarled and ran at him. Benkei was already back on his feet, and kicked it. It jumped back, and watched him. It roared, and quickly turned, and jumped at Yuki. Yuki raised her fists, but Benkei was already in front of her, and elbowed the beast in it's stomach, sending it through the air to land on it's back. "Good job, hero~" Sung Yuki. "Now go pick up your sword and finish it." Benkei was shaking as he walked over to his sword, picked it up, and made his way to the paralyzed beast. It was breathing heavily, blood leaked from it's mouth. He stood above it, shaking. He closed his eyes and stabbed his sword down into the beast's chest. It let our a ferocious growl and soon died. "Another fluke?" Asked Yuki sarcastically as she walked over to Benkei. "Now pick it up, and carry it back to my house." Said Yuki as she took his sword out from his hand. "I'll carry this." "Hey! I just killed this thing, I'm exhausted!" Exclaimed Benkei. "Well, looks like you're just going to have to deal with it." Said Yuki with a shrug. "Come on, I'm hungry." Yuki started walking away. "Ugh..." Benkei bent over and tried to pick it up. "This thing is heavy!" Shouted Benkei as he let go of the beast and almost fell back. "Too bad, and you better not drag it!" Benkei sighed, and stared at the thing. He slowly bent over and tried it again. He got it off the ground, but soon fell over. "I can't lift this thing!" Exclaimed Benkei. He waited for a response from Yuki. He then looked around. "Wait! Yuki, don't leave me here!"

Benkei walked down a path he hoped led back to Yuki's house. He only gathered enough energy to carry the corpse on his shoulders. He continued to glance around him, the shadows caused paranoia. Benkei kept looking down at the empty sheath that hung at his side. "Why did she have to leave me here without my weapon?" Mumbled Benkei. He moved slowly because of the heavy weight of the beast. Every noise made him jump, but he could see nothing, only trees and shadows. After several more minutes of stumbling around, he saw more sunlight. The hopeful beams shot down through the tree tops, almost like a guide. He followed the path until he reached the small wooden home. "Yuki!" Exclaimed Benkei weakly, he was tired and out of breath. The door opened, and Yuki was rubbing her stomach. "Geez, what took you so long?!" Shouted Yuki with an angry tone. She reached her hand out and grabbed the dead body from Benkei's shoulders and carried it one handed back into the house, and slammed the door. Benkei stood there for a moment, almost awestruck. "H-How did she lift something like that with only one hand?!" Asked Benkei to himself, hoping to receive an answer. He then knocked on the door. "Yuki, are you going to let me in...?" "Nope." Answered Yuki through the door. "Why?!" "It's a nice day, I can't let you waste all your time indoors!" Shouted Yuki with a laugh. "But I'm tired-" "Walk it off." Said Yuki. "But that doesn't help-" He heard a loud cracking noise, then a loud thud. "I said walk it off." Said Yuki after a moment of silence. "O-Okay." Said Benkei, he saw that he was shaking. He began to walk down the path until he reached the shadows, then turned around and walked back to the house. He repeated this for hours, and somehow, he did feel more awake, he felt like his energy was coming back. He couldn't understand why it was happening, so he decided to just ignore it. Soon the door slammed open, and Yuki walked out. "Benkei, it's ready!" Shouted Yuki. "Get in here, now." Benkei felt something in her voice, and hurried to the door. He looked inside, and saw chunks of meat sitting on a large wooden tray in the middle of a table. "How did you-" "Nevermind that." Said Yuki as she sat down. "So, did the walk help?" Asked Yuki with a grin. "It actually did." Said Benkei after he sat down. "How?" "Well, these woods are...different." Said Yuki as she bit into a chunk of meat. Benkei did the same, his eyes widened with the flavor. "This tastes great!" Exclaimed Benkei as he bit into it again. "Of course it does, I cooked it!" Boasted Yuki with a grin. "Benkei, in one week, we're setting out to take down the demon army." Said Yuki lightly. "Felt like I should tell you that." "What!?" Benkei almost dropped his meat. "How can we be ready in one week!?" "What makes you think we'll be ready?" Asked Yuki calmly as she ripped the meat with her teeth. "It's going to be a long journey, and I hope to find some more allies." "But you saw the trouble I had when fighting what we're eating!" Exclaimed Benkei. "How could I be any use?" "From what I saw, you fought cowardly, yet well." Said Yuki. "The only injury you got was from falling back on your a** because of those shaky legs!" Laughed Yuki. "I was scared! Weren't you, oh maiden in distress?" "Of course not, I had my hero with me~" said Yuki with a giggle. Benkei only sighed. He eat the meat, and sat back. "Yuki, why do you live out here?" Asked Benkei after awhile. "Because I can't stand reality, that's all." Said Yuki as she put her meat down. "Out here, I feel like I can do anything." "You can't escape reality." Said Benkei as he scratched his head, he realized how embarrassing that sounded. "Of course not, but I can ignore it. So that's what I do." Said Yuki as she closed her eyes. "We're done with our talk about that. Benkei, why haven't you ran away yet?" Asked Yuki as she opened her eyes and stared at him. "Eh? Run away?" "Yes, while I was in the house, you could of dropped the dead animal, and made a run for it. Why did you follow me back? Could it be you're in love with me?" Yuki giggled. "N-No!" Exclaimed Benkei. "I just don't want to get more lost, besides, I can't leave you to fight a hoard of demons, I'm your hero, aren't I?" Asked Benkei sarcastically. "Well said." Remarked Yuki with a smile. "Well, looks like I can trust you not to run away then. That's good." She stood up from her chair, and walked over to her bed. "I'm taking a nap, go outside and play." Said Yuki with a yawn. "Don't treat me like a kid!" Exclaimed Benkei. "Haha, don't get so angry." Said Yuki as she jumped on her bed. "We're the same age from the looks of it, but you see, I can treat you however I like, because I'm superior." "Eh?" "You'll see tomorrow. Now go away, I need a nap."

Benkei walked up and down the small path in the woods. He wondered why Yuki was so confident, calling herself superior. He sighed and stopped walking. "Why am I still here?" He glanced back at the small house, and then to the path. "I could be back at the village..." He paused, and took a deep breath. "Why?" Yuki lied back in her bed. She stared at the wooden ceiling with tired eyes. "He's my hero, eh?" She laughed and closed her eyes. "What a strange guy." Benkei started walking back and forth again. After a hour, he went back to the house, and picked up his sword at leaned against the outside of the house. He gripped it tightly, and slashed the air several times. He sighed, "geez, I'm so bored." Said Benkei as he sat down. He stared down the path. "Why won't I leave?" He then saw a figure run past the path. "Eh?" Following the figure were several strange shadows. Benkei's hands began to shake, but he gripped his sword tightly as he jumped up. "I-I can't just leave the person to die..." He cursed himself as he ran after them. He began to catch up with them, the figure was a woman with long dark green hair. Her left arm was hanging limb at her side, blood was rushing out of it. Benkei saw that the things chasing her resembled the thing he fought in the woods. He let out a shout. "Hey monsters! Stop!" He held his sword tightly as he began to shake. The five that chased her stopped, and looked. The woman kept running as she glanced back at him. "N-Now f-fight me instead!" Demanded Benkei as he pointed his sword at them. One rushed in at him. It's fangs dripped with another's blood. It jumped at him, but he closed his eyes and lunged his sword at the beast. The blade stabbed through it's skull, and it fell. Benkei tried to pull the sword out as another came and ran it's claws through his leg. He shouted in pain as he stepped back, pulling the sword from the skull. He began to flail his sword around, to keep the beast at a distance. It howled as the others came in. Benkei managed to hold his ground, and quickly dashed towards one, letting his sword pierce through it's chest. Benkei was then pushed to the ground as one jumped onto his back. He turned over and gripped the beast's neck. It growled and snarled, but Benkei held it's head back. It dug it's claws into his chest. He flinched in pain. He began to squeeze it's neck. It's breathing became slower, and finally the beast collapsed beside him. The last two stood side by side as they moved in. Benkei was sitting up, but he couldn't stand, his leg was covered in blood. His chest was in too much pain to lift his sword. He closed his eyes and held both arms up to cover himself. A large rock suddenly flew in and hit the side of one of the creature's heads. It made a large thump sound, and the beast growled. Benkei opened his eyes to see a woman standing beside him. She was shaking as well. Her long dark green hair was almost down to her hips. She wore ragged clothing, stains of blood dotted the brown top and pants. Her left arm was still limb at her side, but in her right hand, she held another rock. "Y-You're shaking, you can't fight a battle when your scared." Said Benkei trying to sound cool. "W-What are you talking about? I saw you close your eyes and swing your blade." Said the woman with a smirk. "You're just as afraid as I am!" The two beasts ran in. She tossed another rock. It went into one of the beasts' eyes. One stopped and howled. The other kept running. She screamed as she braced herself. Benkei was on his knees as he swung a punch to the beast's head. He fell over onto his stomach, but stayed in front of her. "T-Time to be a hero." Said Benkei with a grin. He pushed himself up, blood ran down his chest and leg, but he pushed through, and stood on his feet. He rose both fists in front of him, and took a stance. He was shaking, and one eye was closed. "J-Just stay back." They both ran in again, Benkei jumped onto one of them and held it down. He took a rock, and began to bash the rock into it. The girl braced herself and kicked the beast under it's chin. It flew into the air, and landed on it's back. It growled and retreated into the darkness of the woods. Benkei dropped the bloody rock and stood above the dead creature. He was breathing heavily as he turned to the girl. "Looks like we made it." Said Benkei. "I guess so." Said the woman. "You're a hero." Benkei blushed and smiled. "Hehe, I know!" Benkei laughed confidently. "Well, I need to keep going, hopefully you'll be nearby if I run into any more trouble." "A hero is always where he's needed. Don't worry." Said Benkei. She smiled, "well, I'll need a name to call out." Said the woman. "Well, you can call on me, Benkei!" Exclaimed Benkei, but he was barely able to stand, so he couldn't get into a pose. "Alright Benkei, I'm Akira." Said the woman. "Bye, hero!" She ran back to the path, waved, and left. Benkei stood there for a moment, covered in his own blood. "Heh...I'm glad I saved a life..." His eyes began to grow heavy. "I think a hero deserves a nap..." Benkei then collapsed onto the leaf covered ground, soaked in his and the animals' blood. His eyes closed and he began to dream.
