Importance of Being Lucie

The cell of Desdemona Eleanore is dark, dank, and filled with the gloom brought by the Dementors, as well as the depression of Desdemona herself.

Desdemona crouched in her miserable cell. Her eyes were no longer narrowed in hate, but in terrible sadness. Her hair was dirty and ragged, graying, after only a few months in the prison.

She sighed and curled into a little ball, facing the moldy far wall of her cell. Her grimy prison uniform barely covered her knees, and she shivered from a mixture of the elements and the images of chaos the dementors conjured in her head as they passed.

Headmistress Lillian Van Nikolai

Lillian limped over to Desdemona's cell, breathing heavily. She felt like she was going to collapse. The chill from the dementors reached inside her and frosted her heart. She remembered terrible things...her husband leaving...her leaving her daughter...Desdemona torturing her...Desdemona with a knife to her throat...and suddenly she couldn't walk anymore. Her feet felt glued to the floor. She looked around, and there it was just a few steps away...Desde's cell...

She pushed herself onward and reached the cell. Desdemona was curled up in a ball and no longer looked menacing. Lillian stood, swaying slightly, just out of Desdemona's reach from the bars.
"Hello, Desde." She said in a small, quavering voice full of fear. She was already starting to regret her decision...her head was pounding...she felt like she couldn't get any air...

Just as Desdemona had entered a place of near sleep, she was awakened from the calm and jolted back into the frigid terror that was Azkaban. Still dazed, she opened her eyes and stared at the slimy cell wall, hoping the voice that called her name did not belong to who she thought it did.

Her heart hammered in her chest so loud, Desdemona was sure the visitor could hear it. She swallowed, and her arms squeezed tighter around her emaciated body, refusing to roll over and face her once captive.

Headmistress Lillian Van Nikolai

Part of Lillian wanted to cry, another wanted to scream, another wanted to kick Desde, another wanted to leave. Taking a deep breath and trying to steady herself she flicked her wand, and a plate of sandwiches appeared along with a bottle of butterbeer. They were conjured from her home ((Not appeared out of thin air)) and the butterbeer had been from Drago. She put them infront of the cage then backed away a bit, scared that that Desdemona was going to lunge out and attack her. She spoke again in the same small, fearful voice.
"As I recall, you gave me a sandwich in my office. Now I am returning the favor with interest."

Her voice was fearful, but not shaking as badly. She hadn't done anything...and yet she was terrified, her head pounding and memories swimming through her mind.

Desdemona cocked her head slightly so she could see the glimmering plate and bottle just in her peripheral vision. She had to be joking. Yes, that was it. When Desdemona was going to reach for it, Lilly would pull it away. That's what was going to happen. Or would it?

Cautiously, Desdemona moved her elbow, trying to see if Lilly would whisk away the plate of forbidden treats the second she disturbed the silence. Still the plate sat there. Deciding to not waste anymore time, Desdemona sprung up from the ground suddenly, and raced on all fours toward the treasure. It did not move at all, and she swooped it up like some animal, devouring both halves of the sandwich without even stopping to savor the pastrami. She gulped down the butterbeer and then lay on her back to digest, her stomach already taking turns from the richness of wheat bread with a bit of meat on it. How far had she fallen?

Headmistress Lillian Van Nikolai

Lillian watched as Desdemona ate like some wild animal. That must've been how she looked...Desde's blank eyes...was that how mine looked? She thought. She fought the impulse to laugh, then fought back tears as she watched. She felt blood welling in her throat and gave a small cough, letting it stain the sleeve of her robe. She didn't think Desdemona noticed, she was too busy eating.
"Why did you do it Desde?" She asked in a small, feeble voice. "Have you always hated me this much? Did you think you wouldn't get caught? Did you never consider the life in Azkaban you now face?"

Her voice grew quieter and more feeble, but she knew Desdemona could still hear her. Lillian was pale and shaking, much like she had after Desde tortured her.

Desdemona lay on the hard ground spread eagle, her eyes closed in silence. Who would have thought such a simple question could be so hard? "Why..." it was a whole sentence, a paragraph, a novel, a series. It could not be summed up in words. Words she had anyway. She had not spoken since the Battle in the Great Hall.

Feebly, the prisoner lifted her head and stared at the neck of Lillian van Nikolai, not daring to meet her eyes. "Worth it," she said hoarsely, dropping her head back onto the stone and staring at the ceiling. "Ends...justify...means," She swallowed, her voice already nearly spent. "If you had...obeyed."

She sighed, frustrated. It was Lilly's fault she got so banged up in the first place. If she hadn't resisted, if she had only obeyed, she would have seen Desdemona was trying to keep her from getting in the way. She didn't want to inflict that much pain. The same for the students. If they had not resisted...but no one seemed to understand. She was on a mission to make the world a better place. Everyone shunned her. Now look where she was.

"So you're willing to do whatever it takes and whatever you want so long as you get your way, even if it involved torturing someone to bend them to your will?" She asked with a small squeak to her voice.
"I didn't know you'd go this far, Desde." She said quietly. A single tear rolled down her cheek and landed on the floor, she wiped her eyes with her blood stained sleeve so none would follow.
"I hate seeing you like this. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But if you're willing to torture someone to near death...perhaps it is the place for you." She choked on the last words a bit, blood still rising in her throat. She wasn't quite sure why she was here anymore...blood was thundering in her brain, her head ached and she kept fighting back the mad desire to laugh out loud. She felt the same as she had back in the office, just in her own mind. But all the pain was rushing back to her, everything she and Desde had said... all the torture curses and all the decrees she wrote.

Desdemona stared blankly at the stone ceiling of her cell. Her stomach was tied in knots from the richness of the food, and she was now feeling sleepy as well...a state that had not come easy in recent days.

"If you had only...obeyed," she croaked, trying to show that the pain she inflicted on Lilly was a result of the fighting back she did. It was useless. Her words were trapped in her scratchy throat. Desdemona closed her eyes.

The world used to make sense. Her ideal and goals all seemed sensible. Creating a new caliber of wizard had been the morally correct thing to do. Who cared about the ethics involved to get at that point? Hogwarts was the only way to start, everyone just needed to get out of her way and things would be fine. She was in the right after all. But lately...Desdemona had been thinking maybe, just maybe, there was a slight possibility that she could have made a few errors along the way. Lilly might have been one of them.

The pathetic creature opened her bloodshot eyes. "Sad," she whispered in a small voice.

Headmistress Lillian Van Nikolai

Lillian just stared at Dedemona and felt a pang of pity and sorrow. Lillian knew deep down Desdemona had earned this. She nearly killed Lillian...she had made her bleed and cry with pain...
"If shedding blood is necessary for someone's plan...then that plan is not justified at all." She said slowly and calmly. She dug her nails into the palms of her hands to keep her from laughing, fighting back the giggles now wanting to leap from her mouth. She closed her eyes as well but opened them as Desde said 'sad.'
"It is...isn't it..." She murmmered. She remembered how Desdemona had broken her bones...given her a wooden splint that dug into her skin so she could write...how long ago when Desde and her went to hogwarts together, Lillian had repaired Desde when she had broken her own bones from a fall...Desde gave Lillian one sandwich in days...Lillian gave her a large plate...memories and sadness and pain flooded through her mind until they leaked from her eyes and they were sparkling with unshed tears.

She swallowed and looked at Desde again. "I'm sorry it had to come to this Desdemona...really...I am." She paused for a moment. "I came here because I wanted closure. I wanted to say goodbye I suppose. You...you ruined me for quite some time. And I have to live with the scars and the memory of the pain and that bloody office where I laughed, begging for death, forever. You burdened me with that..." She paused again, a lump swelling in her throat, feeling like she was gagging, she continued.
"But what's done is done. It's over. And I hoped you enjoyed your short moment as headmistress, that it was worth this." She said the last sentence coldly, but still she didn't leave.

Desdemona continued to stare at the ceiling. This was goodbye. After this moment she would live for the rest of her days as an inmate, guarded by the bringers of terror. She had always shunned anyone who got too close and pushed them away. So now why did it hurt so much to realize this was to be the last human contact she would have for the rest of her life? And worse, it was from someone who pitied her.

With a sudden movement, Desdemona flipped onto her side, facing the far wall again. "Well, are you leaving?" she said in the haughtiest voice she could manage, though it only amounted to a harsh croak.

Lillian sighed as Desdemona turned around.
"Only if you want me to." She said quietly. She knew Desdemona probably would never have company again. She was trapped just as Lillian had been. What happened to Lillian, she wouldn't wish on her worst enemy...not even the person who had done it. Yet Desdemona did at least get food...she didn't face the torture curse...but her situation was hopeless and bleak, just as Lillian's had been. Lillian turned her face away for a moment and gave a small cough which contained a trace of a high-pitched laugh.

"If you want me to leave I will." She said in a small voice. She looked down at the floor and her hands. Her limbs still had the scars from the dark magic, just as her memory always would...

"Just leave me be," Desdemona said, trying to ignore her almost-begging tone. She still remained facing the moldy wall, willing it to be all over.

"Alright. Goodbye Desde. Though the memories that linger aren't pleasant...I'll certianly always remember you."
Unpleasant was certainly an understatement, what happened in her office was hellish. She stood up, legs trembling, and conjured her walker from home. She hobbled out. not looking back. She felt sorry for Desde, sorry that she wanted to be headmistress so much that she was willing to land herself a cell in Azkaban for it.
