~The irresistible joy of being behind the wheel of a brand new life... thats what I live for~
From all my heart and a little bit of my stomach, Chantler.

Chantler stared at the sunset as he slowly and lightly tossed rocks at the seagulls. His stomach growled with the reminder that he hadn't eaten since the day before. His eyes widened at the thought of his last meal. Dog food. He hadn't had a dog himself but his neighbors did. His neighbors. A nice elderly couple who looked to him to be in their 70's. The image of their rotting corpses sprawled across their bed flashed through his head. Chantler quickly shook the thought away and imagained how good that dog tasted. He diddnt like the dog itself so about a week ago he had discovered it when he went to go look for anything useful left in the house and shot it without any regret. The thing hated Chantler and bite him on several occasions. It was a small terrier with black fur. It only provided him with two days meals. There was half a bag of dog food left that was spilled over in their garage. He guessed that the dog had done that and refused to even think about the other thing that he couldv'e been eating in that house. It was easier to him to think of the things he killed as its and not boys or girls. Living creatures that at one time had a family.

Chantler stood up and took a deep breath of the cool, moiste Florida air. Almost at the bottom on the east side was a small town called Atlantis with just over 2000 residents before The Calling. His parents moved him here some 10 years ago because of the schools. He was now 17. Their house was just across the street from a beach that lined the side of a small natrual harbor. So he was just a stones throw away from the beach. Literaly. He would sit in the driveway and throw rocks from the driveway at the seagulls. He slowly started for his daily walk he took down the beach at sunset. Always hoping to meet somebody that could help him with his food issues. Unlike many others he knew how to make clean water. He had read it in a book about a girl getting trapped in the woods. You place a large pot with some salt water over a small fire and then place a small pot inside with a rock in it so it dosent float. Then you put saran wrap over the small pot and condesation does the rest. Leaving the salt behind. He made lots of it so he had a months surplus in just about every container he could find.

His train of thought was interrupted by a loud scream. He turned towards the noise and found a large dark skined male running towards him with a knife. Chantler quickly started running towards the house but then realized the only logical solution was to fight. He turned around and swiftly pulled a small gun out of his belt. He fumbled hurrily with it trying to get the safety off and paniced as his attacker drew closer and closer. He finnaly held the gun up and shot the gun as tears started to run down his face. The atacker fell over just a few feet away from him as the bullet lodged in his stomach. Chantlers hearing was haulted by a loud ringing noise in his ears from the gunfire. He quickly ran over to the atacker who was curled up into a ball on the ground holding his stomach. He started to crawl away when Chantler started kicking and stomping on him in every way, focusing on his neck and head. He continued on in this way for at least 5 minutes untill he was standing in a pool of blood and the attacker was no longer moving. Chantler had a stady stream of tears running down his face but he knew he was still alive by the unsteady rise and fall of his chest. Chantler drug his body over to the water letting out several sobs along the way. Once there he flipped the unconscious body facedown into the water and kicked him towards the ocean. Chantler then collapsed to the ground and threw up what was in his stomach. Just water and acid. He fell to his side and began to take in what he just did. He killed his first human. He dry heaved a couple of times untill realizing that the guy he just killed had turned to canabalism. Chantler was obviously supposed to be his next meal. The made him feel better about himself but still he couldnt shake the fact that he killed somebody. He tried to stand up but immediantly fell back to his knees. So he started to slowly crawl towards his house untill he was too weak to move. He just collapsed of the beach and layed there. He rolled over and looked above at the orange sky. Seagulls flew over him as if they were taunting him. How in the hell did they stay alive for so long? What were they eating? Definetly not eachother. Chantler thought as he rolled to his side and smilied. He was slowly drifting into a deep sleep untill he realized his raging hunger pains made him realize that the answer to all his problems were flying overhead.

"C'mere, you little bastards," grumbled a teenage girl with a growl, headphones hung about her neck. She had a handful of rocks and kept humming them up at the birds overhead. She heard a chuckle behind her, and turned swiftly to chunk a rock in the direction of the noise.

Swen, her cousin and friend of years, just blocked it with his arm and kept laughing. "Cuss a little more at them, they might think you're friendly as you're chunking rocks at their faces," he joked.

She couldn't help the smile that cracked onto her face. She elbowed him a bit as he walked up beside her. "You a**. You know I'm hungry. You're the one that ate the last of our ******** food!" she accused, still with a grin on her face.

"I'm a growing boy! I can't help it!" he defended, chunking a rock up into the sky.
"Growing boy, my a**! You're ******** eighteen! I'm younger than y--"

There was a splat on the ground at their feet. They both looked down, blinked then grinned widely at their success. "******** yes! Dinner!" Clarance, the female, exclaimed, jumping up and down, Swen joining in with her. Then they gathered it into one of the many Wal-Mart bags they had taken with them. "Time to head back to camp?" Clarance queried with a grin. Swen nodded in agreement and they trooped back only about a minute from where they had stood to a small shack that had a fire pit out front.

Clarance got to work lighting the fire as Swen got out his set of knives and began prepping the bird for cooking. Around forty minutes later, they had the bird skewered and rotating just above the fire as it cooked. Clarance sat in Swen's lap with the male's arms around her for warmth as they took turns rotating their food. "I can't believe this is how we have to live now..," she said softly as she stared into the flames. She felt Swen's arms tighten around her and his chin resting on her shoulder. This was going to be a long life.

Chantler awoke to the normal beach sounds he was used to. The waves lightly crashing on the shore. Seagulls making their wierd noises. Hearing the seagulls made Chantler smile despite the bad taste in his mouth and the unbearable pain in his stomach. He slowly at up and looked around. There was a blood trail leading to the ocean from the spot that he killed that crazy man. The image flashed through his head for a moment but he quickly shook it away. He stood up and then noticed the many birds flying around. He stared at them for a moment but then started to swiftly walk towards his house once devising a plan to catch them. Throwing things at them would be too hard and if he missed he would scare off the rest. Once at the house, Chantler entered the garage through a side door and immediately started to move boxes around until he found one that had "Cast net" written in sharpie on the top. His dad loved to fish in his spare time and had taught him how to use it. He didn't know where any poles were though or he would already have had food.
Chantler pulled the dark green net out and began to unravel it while walking back down the drive way. Once to the beach he found a small flock waddling around on the soft sand. He swiftly tossed the net and watched it entangle at least five birds. "Yes!" He squealed out as he ran over to the net and pulled out his knife and stabbed three birds. Enough to feed him today. No need in killing too much and wasting it. Wasting food was not an option. He brought the birds back to his house and in under an hour he was back on the beach, relaxing in the sun and filling his stomach.

"Rency, wake uuup!" Swen whined, shaking the girl who was just grumbling, sprawled out on top of him on the floor of their shack. "********," she mumbled, getting more comfy. Swen whined some more, pushing on her. Finally, Clarance growled and rolled off of him, curling up into a ball. Swen just laughed at her and stood, stretching. "I'm gonna go for a walk. Be back in a little bit," he told her, receiving only a grunt in return. He just shook his head with a smile and walked out of the shack. It was hot today, so he decided to take his shirt off and stuff it into the back pocket of his jeans as he walked barefoot along the shore, the hem of his jeans getting wet as the water hit them. He walked along, looking up at the seagulls flying above him. There was a contented smile on his face as he continued to stroll along, enjoying the cool breeze that hit him.

He was suddenly knocked out of his own little world as he tripped over something. He yelped and stumbled forward, catching himself in the sand on his hands and knees. "Holy s**t, what the ********..." He looked behind him as he got up onto his knees and found that he had tripped over what looked like a very large piece of drift-wood. Upon closer inspection and the scent, though, he covered his mouth and felt like puking. It was a leg. A human, rotting, shriveled-up let just laying there on the shore. The more he stared at it, the sicker he got and eventually just leaned over and puked. He barfed up anything he had eaten in the past two days and a whole lotta stomach acid. Why..? Why would there just be a ******** leg laying there on the beach? What the ******** was wrong with this world?! He puked some more then began to dry-heave for a few moments before he closed his eyes and calmed himself down. Without opening his eyes, he crawled away from the limb and then just sat there cross-legged on the beach, holding his head in his hands. He breathed in and out, trying to forget the image. It was...too gruesome...

Chantler sat in the soft sand staring at the seagulls. He decided to take a walk in the opposite direction out of curiosity. He never saw anybody headed toward town but he never even though of going the opposite way. Chantler needed the company of another person. Anything but these stupid birds.
He continued of down the beach until he saw a boy sitting in the sand a couple of houses down. Chantler immediately turned around and ran back to his house assuming that the boy was a cannibal like the man he killed the day before. He made a mental note to drag the grill into the living room for dinner tonight so he wouldn't attract anybody to his house. He hadn't thought of doing that before but then realized how much danger hes been putting himself in. Practically leading people to his house. Chantler sat on the front porch swing and watched the birds more. He was amused by the simple minded creatures. Natures retards. He laughed at the though. Funny though. All he wanted was for some human interaction and when he had the opportunity he ran assuming he was going to be eaten.

Swen wasn't paying attention to anything around him. He was only focused on getting that image out of his head. And then he realized that he would have to pass it again on the way home. And he tensed, braving himself for what he was about to do. He couldn't let Clarance see that. Oh, no, that would scar her for life. So he had to do this.

If he remembered correctly, there was still a beaten-up, soggy shoe on that foot. That would have to do. he looked around, spotting a palm tree nearby that was at a height that he could reach the top. He walked over to it and yanked some of the leaves off of it, holding a bundle in each hand. His trembling body then walked over to the limb. He paled greatly and turned a bit green at the sight. At least this time he was expecting it. He felt his stomach lurch and turn as he reached forward with the leaf-gloved hands and grabbed ahold of the shoe-clad foot. Then he pulled, turning greener all the time. He pulled it towards the water and hid it in a bunch of tall grass, jeans getting soaked. He didn't want to just drag it into the water for fear of finding it washed ashore again or while they were washing off.

As soon as he knew it was securely hidden, he ran away from it as fast as he could, leaving the palm fronds behind. He didn't want anything to do with that thing. Then he promptly puked as soon as he was a good twenty feet away from it. He aimed for the water this time so it would wash away quickly. After breathing for a few moments, he stood on shakey legs and made his way back to the shack.

clarance looked up at him as he approached. She smiled and waved, holding her arms out to him as she laid her legs out on the sand. Swen smiled weakly at her and walked over, laying down on his side with his head in her lap. Clarance didn't ask what was wrong. He had that look in his eye that told her not to bother. So, instead, she looked back out over the water and combed her fingers through his hair. "Hey, Swenny? I wanna fix up our shack... Can we go out and find some driftwood today to fix the cracks in the walls and stuff?" she asked him curiously. Swen only smiled and nodded with a curt, "Of course." And they rested there for a little longer.

Chantler sat on the porch for a while contemplating his loneliness. He finally decided that he wanted to find someone but at the same time not be in danger of getting killed. Once figuring out what his plan was he hopped up from his seat and began to rip out some of the tall bamboo like plants that grew next to his house. He couldn't put a name to the stuff but it was like a weak bamboo. Thats what he thought of it as. He made a large pile of it that he eventually drug down to the beach. Once Chantler had finished that he got a large hammer out of the back of his shed and began to tear down the wooden fence between his and his neighbors backyards. He made a small pile and then drug that out to the beach to make one big pile.
While working Chantlers hunger resurfaced along with his thirst. He got some left-over seagull and water and sat on the porch enjoying the breeze. Waiting for night to fall so he could set the pile on fire.

After a nice thirty-minute rest, the cousins stood from their sandy seats and went inside to gather their small weapons just in case. Clarance grabbed a knife and Swen grabbed a gun that his father had given to him. He had only used it maybe twice, and he still had a good supply of bullets left.

Once they were sure they were ready, they set off down the beach in search of driftwood. About five minutes through their walk, Swen had tensed up as they passed the place that he had hidden the severed limb. Clarance didn't bother to question him and just kept on going.

They both picked up some wood here and there, some damp, some completely dried out. They had even found some random boards that were lying on the sand. They brought their first load back and stored it in the cabin before going off to find some more. Around five minutes past their first checkpoint, the Sun had begun to sink down below the horizon. They walked closer to each other, Clarance holding onto Swen's toned forearm. Swen's other arm rested on the gun holstered to his hip. They were both cautious as they walked on. There was no telling what could come at them in those moments of darkness.

Once sunset came Chantler decided to skip his walk figuring that if their were anybody, they would come to him. Instead he scour the area that he had shot the man the day before looking for his gun. He dropped it and hadn't thought about needing it until now. He found the gun in a gas station underneath the counter. Having looked around more he found a box with at least 20 bullets in the managers office. Lucky him. Guns were hard to come by. Good knifes were too. A while back someone started a fire in town that burned down a whole neighborhood. At least 150 house. Chantler was lucky enough to live a long way from town. Only having one neighbor. After their house the road curved and headed in-land along the edge of a state park. That left a long stretch of beach with no houses or businesses.
After finding the gun buried in the sand Chantler cleaned it off and stuck it back in his belt. He then sat in the sand and waited for the sunlight to disappear. Once it was dark he grabbed a half full gas can out of the garage and poured a little on different sections of the pile, making sure not to use too much. Chantler then lite the end of a plant on fire and ran back to his house as the whole pile burst into flames. He then sat on then sat on the porch swing. Hidden behind the trees. Waiting for someone to come along.

Swen and Clarance walked along, attatched at the elbows. They both about jumped out of their skin, though, hearing a small explosion not too far ahead of them. They looked at each other wide-eyed before taking off in that direction, weapons in hand.

Upon reaching the only place it could have come from, they stopped in their tracks, observing the scene. There was a huge pile of wood scorched and red from the bonfire that was burning. It was maybe fifteen feet away from the back porch of a home.

They stood still for a few more moments, trying to decide what to do. Then, a thought knocked Clarance upside the head. And she started screaming. "Who teh ******** set this fire?! Are you the ******** that set our houses on fire?! Answer me, Goddamnit!" Swen quickly grabbed onto her and hugged her tightly. "Ren, calm down. Calm down," he told her soothingly, holding her in his arms. She was now sobbing, tears streaking her cheeks.

When that fire was set, the two of them lost everything. They had lived right next to each other. Clarance's house was the first how to fall. It was the first house lit. The little ******** that set the fire had doused her house in gasoline then lit it aflare, taking out everything she had left that she loved. She ran to Swen's house, and they managed to grab anything useful to them. Then they stood back in the middle of the road watching as their once-loving neighborhood fell around them. This was the first time Clarance had cried about it since that day. It was about a month ago that that had happened. A few weeks after The Calling killed everyone that they had loved.

And so they stood, Clarance sobbing as Swen held her tightly in his arms, shoving her face in his chest. He had the gun in his hand as he rubbed her back. "If there's anyone there, please come out..," he called out in an even voice.

Chantler sat still and quiet on the porch swing, watching the whole thing. They didn't seem like cannibals. They don't look crazy either. He finally built up the courage to get up and confront them but still had the gun by his side, ready to fire. "H-hi." Chantler stuttered as he stepped onto the sand. "Uhm. I'm Chantler."

Swen looked over at the boy and nodded slightly in acknowledgement. He squeezed Clarance one more time before letting her go. "Clare, it's okay. He's not the one, alright? Look," he told her gently.

Clarance turned around, tears still streaking her cheeks as she tried to wipe them away. She looked at Chantler with blurry vision. "I-I'm s-s-sorry... I-I'm C-Clarance," she introduced herself through her small sobs.

Swen smiled a little at her and put a gentle hand on her shoulder. "I'm Swen. Her cousin," he introduced himself with a smile. His gun was clenched, cocked in his hand as well, just in case. "Is this your house?" he asked curiously, taking a cautious step forward, Clarance doing the same.

"Its, uhm... okay." Chantler said. He smilied a little and then turnd around to glance at the house for a moment. It looked really creepy with the light of the fire illuminating it. "It was my parents." he said as he turned back around. "My apartment was lost in the fire."
Chantler stared at the boy in admiration. He looked so...perfect.
"What are you two doing way out here?" He said still staring at the boy. Chantler ould rip the clothes off of him right now. If the girl werent here he would. Even if had to be rape.

"O-Oh... I'm... I'm sorry..," Clarance apologized. He knew their pain of loss.

Swen shrugged a little. "Both of our houses were lost in the fire... We live in a shack a little ways down the beach. We went for a walk to find some wood to fix up the place a little bit. Then we were gonna raid some places to get some nails and tools. ...You wouldn't happen to have anything we could use, would you?" Swen asked, taking a few steps closer, looking Chantler in the eyes.

"Not... me but, uhm... what are you two doing way out here anyways?" Chantler half mumbled. He was trying not to stare at the boy but he found himself glancing over at him every moment he could. Around the middle of the responce to his question, Chantler reached out his right hand and placed it on Swen's chest vilolently but not enough to be considered a hit. He then squinted and looked at the girl. "Had to make sure you were real." He said with a serious look on his face, still leaving his hand on Swens's chest. Practically. Orgasmic.
