I've only seen the more popular Lynch films: Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Mulholland Drive and I'm working my way though Twin Peaks.

I'm a big fan of his work and I love watching the making of documentaries and other interviews. I really need to see Lost Highway.

I haven't seen a single David Lynch movie. sweatdrop

This might be an annoying question but what's a good movie to start off with?

I really, really love Mulholland Drive (I want to watch it for the fourth time this week) but I think you should start off with Blue Velvet, just because it's so quotable (I always do the Heineken quote) and Dennis Hopper just KILLS in this movie.

If you can tolerate Nicholas Cage, see Wild at Heart. Willem Dafoe's character is SO awesome.

David Lynch movies are so great because he puts so much work into the little details, things you won't notice like the extras in the movie. Or just all the random scenes.

I have only seen Dune, although I am sure I will make more of an effort to see his work later on.

I haven't seen Dune yet but I heard it wasn't that good. I still would like to see it, though.

Didn't he lose all crative control of Dune and subsequently disown it?

Yeah, something like that happened. I'm not into anything Dune but I want to see the movie just b/c Lynch was attached.

Does anyone here watch Twin Peaks?

I tried to follow it when they were showing it on IFC once. I think I saw a few episodes only, but I liked it a lot.

I watched Twin Peaks when it was shown on TV here, and my friends and I were huge fans - it's excellent! I subsequently saw the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, which is fantastic and seriously creepy... it wraps up (some) of the teasing loose ends from the TV series. I only wish there were more TV series like that - what a treat it was to watch! (Incidentally, several of these Lynch films have a great soundtrack - as we were discussing over in the other thread.)

I've been a huge Lynch fan ever since Eraserhead (which, at the time, was like nothing I'd ever seen before) and The Elephant Man, and I would agree that Blue Velvet is a good place to start, if you're new to his movies. I love Wild At Heart - agree about the slight Nicolas Cage glitch, but Dafoe and Laura Dern make up for him... I started reading the novel, The Story of Sailor and Lula, a while back, but then kind of got off it. Must finish it - it was really good. I also love Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr., which I just caught up with fairly recently. Some people seemed to think they were a bit impenetrable - but, seriously, people, this is David Lynch!! Just enjoy it, there's only one of him around!

I haven't seen The Straight Story yet, although I gather it's very good, but not in the same mould as his other films - which is why I guess I haven't caught up with it yet. I tried to watch Dune on TV one time, because it was Lynch, but I think I gave up and didn't finish it. A bit disappointing, but of interest because of the Lynch connection - and also has Kyle MacLachlan, who seemed to become one of Lynch's "regulars".

alleira, I am SO glad to have you in this guild.

I love Mulholland Drive so much that I think it might've replaced Blue Velvet as my favorite Lynch film. It might be a tie, though. Naomi Watts absolutely BLEW ME AWAY with her performance and the story... I love how the last 20 minutes of the film just went insane. It's a movie I could watch OVER and OVER to try to make sense out of it.

As for Blue Velvet, it's all about Dennis Hopper. I also love how David Lynch uses the extras in this movie. Oh, and BEN! So ********' sauve....

Thank you, xmkatx, I'm glad to be here so I can take part in all these great discussions about my favourite subject! xd

Blue Velvet was my favourite Lynch for a long time, as well. It seems to be part of Lynch's development that his films get more complex and intriguing as time goes on, so that he delivers enigmas like Lost Highway and Mulholland Dr. I'm still pondering over sequences from Lost Highway, and I totally agree about Mulholland Dr. - for that last 20 minutes or so, I thought I'd dozed off and woken up to a different movie (although I knew the dozing off bit couldn't happen with DL!). So, I still love Blue Velvet, but it almost starts to look straightforward, compared to his later films! And Dennis Hopper - born to play Frank Booth... "It's a strange world".

It's also Lynch's use of the lesser characters, and the exquisite detail he includes in his films that make them so fascinating, and difficult to get a handle on. There's always another layer, then another, then, just when you think you're there, he throws a body swerve and you're back at the beginning again. Fascinating guy.

I have seen "The Elephant Man," (very sad movie) and heard of "Eraserhead" and "Lost Highway."
