I bet u guys kno a bunch about my neighbor totoro since ur in this guild,and that you've watched it over and over.But didja kno that this story was based on a murder?In the year xxxx there were 2 girls.they were sisters.the younger one was kidnapped for ransom,raped,then killed.The older sis was the first to find her body.When they asked her wat she saw she was so traumatized that she said "something that looked like a raccoon"and"a cat monster" sound familiar?later on the older sis committed suicide.In the movie Mei and Satsuki see the soot sprites and meet totoro.They say if u c them ur near certain death.If u don't believe me here's proof:When the girls go in the cat bus theyre colored differently because it's nightime or they are ghosts,and when they bring their corn to their mom she thinks she sees them but isn't sure,and when they're playing the flute with totoro in the tree the dad looks up and smiles.He's probably writing about his dead daughters and that they're playing in the yard.

scary...liked the movie but its scary where he based it upon....but still 2thumbs up for hayao...
i like spirited away too...it's one of my top faves! heart heart

Ah yes. My friend told me this. I was surprised, but when I think about it, the sandal did belong to Mei but Satsuki lied about it because she couldn't handle it. She called for Totoro, the God of Death, summoning him and resulting to her death to be with her sister. She finds her sister and like you said, they visit their mother. But, that's when you're wrong because the mother did see them, meaning she was going to die as well.
Anyway, at the end, they don't have shadows some people say and it tended to be a 'happy ending' because it was for younger viewers and Totoro shall forever be gone from my heart BECAUSE OF THIS emotion_donotwant
But I swear, if every movie they make are connected to deaths or murders, my childhood shall be in ruins.

That's some pretty deep stuff. I suppose a lot of anime titles (especially such elaborate fairytale-type ones) will have hidden meanings. I still enjoy what I think is the story, and especially the art style.

I guess everyone thinks differently, but this makes me like the story even more now! Think of it this way. It's not just a random movie now, it has a real meaning to it.
