African Dwarf Frogs, or ADF's, are cute, characteristic little things. They breath air, but must not leave the water. They make great additions to any small tank.

Tank Size~

ADF's do best 3-5 gallons per frog, but I have successfully kept 2 in a 1 1/2 gallon tank, for a few months. The tank should not be any taller then 18 inches, as they need to be able to get to the surface for air. PetCo has 6.6 gallon bookshelf tanks that seem to be a great choice for these little froggies.

Feeding~

ADF's arent too picky when I comes to feeding, but they are nearly blind, and rather dumb, so I reccomend target feeding them with a turkey baster or seringe, or teaching them to eat in the same place, at the same time, every day. They can eat Blood Worms, Brine Shrimp, Black Worms, and the like, along with livebearer fry. I tought one of my girls to come up to the surface for flakes as a treat every now and then, too.

Tank Mates~

African Dwarf Frogs are better off kept alone, unless you want to go the extra mile to make sure your froggies get to eat. As I said before, they are almost blind, and not very smart, and in a community tank, its hard for them to get anything to eat. Slow, small fish are best, if you want to keep fish with them. Do not keep other bottom feeders such as Corries with them, as the frogs will be easily out competed. On that note, Otto's should be fine.

Decor~

The little guys like to have caves, and plants to hide in and balance on, in the "Zen Position." They like their hiding places to be low to the ground and very dark. Plants should be nice and wide-leaved, so they can rest on them. Their skin is very fragile, and cuts easily, so no hard plastic plants, or rough decorations. A very fine gravel or sand is a must, as they dive-bomb back down to the bottom after getting a breath, and can easily hurt themselves by bashing into the substrate.

Extra~

When a frog "Zen's Out," it sits motionless, sometimes for an hour or so. They can do it near the bottom, or floating at the surface, or some times, sitting with their little noses out of the water, so they dont have to move to get air. Pretty much, anywhere they're comfortable. Its completly normal, but if you are ever worried about them, all you have to do it give them a quick little poke.

The tank MUST have a hood. They can get quite exuberant when they go up to get a breath, and may launch themselves out of the tank!

Never, ever net your frog. Their toes break easily, and broken toes can effect how easily they can get to the surface for air. Instead, scoop them out with your hand or with a cup.

Sexing~

ADF's are actually quite easy to tell apart. Females are a bit more plump, and have a small bump on their butts, where a tail would be, if they had one. Males are not quite so fat, and have thicker front legs. Their skin is also bumpier, and they have a little white bump under each front leg.
