The Landscape The Westland covers an area of 480 000 square kilometers, 600 miles wide, and 800 miles long. It is bordered by four distinct areas: to the north, the Northland; the south, the Human Southland; to the southeast, the Borderlands, known as Paradise Valley; and to the east, the Eastland. The western boundary is the ocean. There is one main river that passes through the Westland: the Crystal River that runs from just below Chansond’eau, the capital city of the Westland, to the Crystal Lake, which is just north of Andunin, the northernmost Westland city, just below the Mystic Mountains. There are two large swamps: Tavari and Ob. The rest of the land is almost entirely covered in deciduous forest, save a few clearings here and there. The Westland has four cities. Chansond’eau, located in the northwest of the country, is the capital, and home of the royal family, and has a population of approximately 100 000. Andunin is the northernmost and easternmost city, barely a quarter the size of Chansond’eau, and has a population of only about 23 000. Ebonscarp, to the west, is the smallest of the Westland cities, and has a population of only about 5000. Tavari, slightly south of Ebonscarp, has a population of approximately 15 000.

The History The Westland is the location of the creation of the Firstborn, the Elves. They were brought forth from the ocean, mere miles from the future location of the city of Chansond’eau. This was where they first settled, living in peace together. When Melkor appeared and began to send his evil creatures to destroy the elves, they rallied together and fought against them for the next three thousand years. At last the evil was dispelled, and they tried to return to their former lives. However, despite the fact that the evil creatures had been dispelled, their effects remained: seeds of doubt and distrust had been planted, and the elves segregated themselves into two different groups: those whom they referred to as the Light Elves, those who had golden hair, and those whom they referred to as the Dark Elves, those with black hair. Dissention rose between the groups until the Dark Elves left the west and headed south to create their own kingdom, under the guidance of a young woman named Alyse. The Light Elves gathered themselves under a man named Aubrey, who ruled the Westland until the end of the Third Age. Yet even under his rule, not all was well: there were some Light Elves who were unhappy with the separate of the races, who chose to leave the rest of the Light Elves, saying that they were too pretentious. Barely a century into the Second Age, they sailed, leaving the Four Lands entirely. At the end of the Third Age, the Light Elves were once again called to war: this time, to come to the aid of the Southland Elves, the Dark Elves, who had been attacked by the dwarfs. King Aubrey was killed in this war, and his son, Eregon, began to reign in his stead. King Eregon was unusual for a Light Elf. Not only did he consider the two races of Elves to be one and the same, different only in appearance, but he even took a Dark Elf, daughter of the new Southland ruler, to be his wife. Now the kingdom lives in peace, slowly rebuilding its rapport with the other elven kingdoms as its people learn to accept those who are different from themselves.

The Economy The Westland has an active economy driven by many hardworking people. Their currency is known by the metals it’s made of: gold, silver, and bronze. A single bronze coin is the worth of a loaf of bread. Twenty bronze coins make up the equivalent of one silver piece, and twenty silver pieces make up the equivalent of one piece of gold. Thus, one gold piece is the equivalent of 400 bronze pieces. Though the Westland produces almost everything they need, they have a few imports: sugar cane and littinum. In exchange, they export stone and silver.

Government The government in the Westland is a patriarchal monarchy, ruled by a king until his death. If there is no prince to take his place, only then will his wife, the queen, take power.

Technology Though the Westland technology is approximately the same as at the end of the Middle Ages, the quality of it is far superior, and the quality of their goods rivals those of our own today. This is partially due to their longevity, which gives them the lifespan to perfect the techniques, and partially due to their magic, which allows them to do more than what would naturally be possible.

Religion The elves pay homage to the Valar, the creators of the world, and above them, Ilúvatar, who gave them life. Mettarë, the first day of the year, is a day of looking ahead to what’s to come, and the elves celebrate it with a festival, during which they pray to the Valar for blessings in the year ahead, everything from health to good weather for crops, good hunting, and so on. During the days of the Enderi, the three (or six) days that are not a part of any month, there is a three-day celebration of the growth of the crops, a final fun fling before the harvest begins. The final day of the year, Yestarë, is the final day of celebration, and it begins with a ritual washing of the body, symbolically washing away the maladies of the past so that they can begin the new year afresh.

International Relations The Westland is on good terms with the Elven Southland, home of the Dark Elves, and the Eastland, home of both Light and Dark Elves, as well as those of mixed blood. They have a military presence in the dwarfish settlements of the Northland, and though they do trade with the Human Southland, humans are not generally tolerated in the Westland, and sometimes killed on sight. It is highly recommended against the elves visiting the Human Southland, as it is dangerous for them there as well.

Magic For thousands of years, the Westland Elves were born without magic, and in their early years would have to visit the Gift-Giver in order to receive magical gifts. At the end of the Second Age, the beginning of the Third Age, with no explanation, the Westlanders began to be born with magical gifts that would manifest themselves when the children reached the ages of anywhere between five and nine years old. The later the gift manifested, the more powerful it usually would be. There is no limit to what the magic might be. The magic that they are born with, or for the older generations, given, is the only magic that the Westland elves can use. They do not have the ability to learn magic or use spells or the like.
